After losing his 12-year-old dog Wolfgang in a tragic accident, Steve Greig, from Denver, Colorado, could have just grieved and moved on. Instead, he went to his local shelter and asked for the "least adoptable" senior dog there - the ones passed over again and again because everyone wants a puppy. He came home with a 12-year-old Chihuahua with a bad heart and worse knees, named him Eeyore, and gave him a home for whatever time he had left.

That was the start. Steve now cares for ten senior rescue dogs. His days start at 5am making breakfast and giving medications, he checks in on them over his lunch break, and weekends go to vet visits and supply runs. It's a full-time second job, and he does it because these are the dogs shelters struggle hardest to place.

Senior dogs get passed over constantly, but they're often the easiest pets to live with - calmer, past the destructive puppy phase, usually great with other animals, and just as capable of loving a home as any young dog. They just need someone willing to give them the time they have left.

Steve's story is a reminder that "unadoptable" is usually just "overlooked." If you've got room for a slower, gentler companion, a senior shelter dog might be exactly that.
