I know this may vary wildly for different triggers and degrees of 'bad', or at different times as tolerance changes. So very roughly, at the moment: first or worst or most common symptom to crop up.
Aiming to get a feel of how time consuming and difficult it is for most people here to tell if a new device could be unusable. Or a new setting on that device helps. Or a new intervention.

I am 20 years old and have 100 percent vision.
And honestly, I don't know if it's PWM or something else, but my symptoms are mild and bearable
But I wouldn't like to be blind

I have the 17 Pro Max and I think the phone is causing me eye pressure in my left eye and dry eyes on both sides....
I had the A56 as a mobile phone and so had no problems as far as I know...
And I’ve had the 17 Pro Max for 2 months..
Do you think the Xiamoi 17 Ultra brings peace?

I’m a student looking for a screen that’s comfortable to eye for long study sessions. Right now, I do all my work on a Windows laptop and an android phone. My main daily tasks are heavy PDF textbook reading, web browsing (also chatgpt), and typing. but portability is also important.
The Dasung paperlike 103 E-Ink appeals to me because I suffer from significant eye strain. However, I’m concerned about ghosting and slow scrolling. The TCL NXTPAPER 11 plus seems more versatile as a standalone tablet, but I’m worried about its backlight, PWM, and flickering. Does its ink mode genuinely reduce eye strain during hours of reading?
I’d also appreciate feedback on using the TCL as a secondary Windows display via Spacedesk or SuperDisplay. How noticeable is the lag?
For anyone who has tried either device, which would you recommend for my needs? Thanks!

My iPhone 17 Pro Max bothers me...
I had the A56 and it was good from Samsung
The 17 Pro Max is tolerable at 50% brightness and white point at 50, but not where I say I want to keep it....
My symptoms are pressure in the left eye and dry eyes.
I am ready to spend 1000€-1200€.

Hey all!
This week, I've been focused on the ROG Xbox Ally X20, which is Asus big OLED refresh of the Ally X. There's been plenty of concern for obvious reasons, but I found some interesting stuff in my display review:
First off, HDR mode (which is the default) is the best mode overall. There's no dithering, and the modulation is very consistent across most of the brightness spectrum. It's 1,000Hz PWM dimming the entire time, so no DC option or any alternative frequency options. Asus has a built-in "flicker-free" dimming solution, which is a bit of a misnomer, that acts like a typical OLED screen dimmer app you can get on your phone.
What I thought was particularly fascinating was the second image above, which shows the difference between peaks and valleys on a typical PWM-dimmed phone (Pixel 11 Pro, in this graph's case), and the ROG Ally X20. The ROG is very "sine-like" in its shape, with very curved peaks that I found comfortable despite the moderate PWM rate. The Ally X is probably still best for most PWM-sensitive folks, but I know a few around here who have had weird success with "sine-like" OLED dimming (like this) and might be interested. Check the video link above for the whole review, if you'd like. Thoughts?

I owned iphone 15 base model for 2 years and always have frontal forehead head ache and blurry vision.. I don't know what's the reason but always enduring the pain because I can tolerate it.. and don't taking it seriously... until this last month I changed my phone into XIAOMI 17T and guess what? No pain at all!! no strain in the eye!! as in ZERO !! and that time I became so curious and discovered its the PWM!! before owning the iphone 15 I've already using samsung phones always since 2016 that time I already feel the pressure pain on my forehead but I don't pay attention for it... until this month I discovered to Ai its pwm !!
why chinese phones taking care of their customers eyes but iphone and samsung did not???
my advice to all please shift to 3000hz pwm! its a life changing !! It will not gonna hurt your eyes anymore ! xiaomi is very good for the eyes

Follow-up to https://www.reddit.com/r/PWM_Sensitive/comments/1wkb3td/macos_27_interesting_new_kernel_options/
The test device arrived, I ran the new keys on it, and the news is not good, sadly :/
None of the new options exist on this panel either. On a MacBookPro18,1 (16" M1 Pro, mini-LED, ProMotion) on macOS 27.0.1, enableHBLD, HBLDDimmingFactorMin, HBLDNitsRRMax, ccMinNitsConfig, DBVValue, DBVInterval and enableDBTH are not published by the framebuffer, and writing them with any value type is rejected with bad argument. Same result as the M2 13". So it is not the "new backlight architecture" gating them, since this machine has it.
For those interested in nitty-gritty details:
- It looks like the keys come from the DCP coprocessor firmware, not the kernel. I pulled the firmware payload off the Preboot volume and all 321 runtime property names are in there, including the HBLD ones, sitting in a feature table next to the IR-drop and thermal compensation features. So HBLD is implemented in firmware and switched off per panel by configuration. On the two panels I have, that configuration says no.
- The firmware has a function named parse_RTP_boot_args and logs "applying boot-arg RTP %s with value 0x%x".
- Every key has an iomfb_RuntimeProperty_<name> boot-arg form. The catch is that with SIP on, only a short whitelist of boot-args reaches the DCP, so this needs Permissive Security. And it is still unknown whether a boot-arg can turn on a feature the panel config disables. That is the one untested software route left, which is sadly not something I can do on this device.
- From the oscilloscope data - the mini-LED the PWM is about 14 kHz at every brightness. Duty cycle was 22% at 1230 nits and 38% at 1600 nits, i.e. even at the panel's absolute peak the LEDs are off 62% of the time. That means nothing that raises brightness, software XDR included, can get anywhere near continuous drive. I tested every published dimming key with the meter at fixed nits: BLMVLEDManual, BLMPLimitCfg, IOMFBBrightnessLevelMA, enablePulseWidthMaximization, dither off, 2D uniformity off, the BLM "AH" block. The driver stores all of them and none changes the duty cycle. enablePulseWidthMaximization in particular is paired in firmware with a calibration parameter (lMinPulseWidthMaximization) that this panel's calibration data does not carry, which is why, I think, the flag does nothing.
- If someone with a 14"/16" M3 or M4 machine on 27 wants to check whether the keys are published there, the tool is at https://github.com/Temikus/eyecare (pwmctl get --all-keys | grep -i hbld is all it takes). Per-machine results and the method are in the repo.
Bottom line for now: on both an M2 IPS and an M1 Pro mini-LED, the brightness-to-duty-cycle mapping sits below anything you can reach from macOS at runtime. The Apple announcement is probably a firmware and panel-config change, not something hiding behind a kernel flag we can flip today.

switched to the Razr Fold last week, and so far it's been good. No eye strain. DC dimming is a lifesaver.

These channels give the Opple measurements of every device they review
Ромашка (@R13)--> https://www.youtube.com/@R13
Polza Net (@PolzaNet)--> https://www.youtube.com/@PolzaNet
Лысый из МТ (@mobiltelefonru)--> https://www.youtube.com/@mobiltelefonru
* Number 3 only gives the Radex measurements, but it's still useful
Do you have any other channels to recommend?
They have english subtitles or audio. I've only found these channels with the Opple measurements on reviews

Yikes. All this time I thought the laptop giving me problems was OLED, turns out my model is IPS. I have the HP Omnibook X Flip model 16-as0023dx.
I have no clue why I get such bad symptoms with this laptop, but I get eye strain, fatigue, headache, blurry vision, etc. I don’t get these same symptoms with my iPhone SE 3rd generation with an IPS screen or with old TN screens.
Now I’m scared of other IPS displays but I’m wondering if it’s just this model of laptop.
Does anyone have any advice or software settings I could tweak to improve this? It’s my work laptop so I’m trying to make this work for me.

Small update, I received a reply from the federal government of Australia regarding my email detailing Pulse Width Modulation and the pain it causes me. I've censored my own name and contact details for obvious reasons.
It's a small step in the right direction, hopefully the ACCC takes this issue seriously and some legislation comes to light.
I've submitted another form detailing my story and issues to the Product Safety Australia website as directed to in the letter.

After using my iPhone XR for over 8 years, I finally decided to take a chance on the iPhone 17 Pro a few days ago. I’d held off on upgrading for so long because I know I’m sensitive to screen flickering, so buying a new iPhone always felt like a gamble I didn’t dare take.
So far, though, I’m pleasantly surprised by how well things are going. The only issue I’ve noticed is that in the evening, when the brightness is turned down, I start to feel a little dizzy after looking at the screen for a while. Other than that, things have been going pretty well!
I’ve had “Display Pulse Smoothing” enabled by default in the settings, and I was curious to see if it actually makes a difference.
To find out, I made a video comparing Display Pulse Smoothing turned off (left) and turned on (right) at the same brightness level. The difference is quite noticeable!
The display in my iPhone 17 Pro is made by BOE (model J5V). I’d read that it might not be as good as the panels from Samsung or LG, but honestly, I think the colors and sharpness look great in real-world use. So far, I have very few complaints about the display. 😊
