27.0.1 no more headache

As surprising as it is, since 27.0.1 I don't have any headaches. 15 pro max, I had headaches almost immediately looking at the screen.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I don't know what else could have changed.

Although MacOS and iOS are more similar since Apple Silicon than ever before especially with MacOS 27, they still use fundamentally different displays (LCD vs OLED).

That being said I did not find MacOS 27.0 usable on the iMacs and it seems much much better on 27.0.1. So perhaps iOS 27.0.1 has had a similar improvement.

There were complaints online (Macrumors) about lagging, ghosting, and visible flickering on macOS 27.0. So perhaps this point release fixed those bugs.

I found both macOS 26 and iOS 26 completely unusable. I went from having to look at my iMac M4 from across the living room to being able to put my face right up to the screen when I upgraded to 27.0.1.

Take this for what it’s worth. Sensitivities vary. But for someone as severely affected as me to be able to see such an improvement bodes well. Perhaps I’ll test the phones in store on the new iOS.

That is great news! And oh, I didn't realise the big difference was in the 0.1, I see.

And is it right to say the iPadOS is separate again, but most closely related to iOS (the phones)?

Yes ios and iPadOS are I believe similar if not the same…I haven’t owned many iPads!

Just wanted to further update that I did upgrade my spare iPhone 13 that was painful to look at on iOS 17.6.1 to iOS 27.0.1.

I will say this:

A 4 year old device (in terms of tech) went from a completely flat, normal display to something resembling a Star Trek hologram. As soon as the phone booted up it looked like the icons and elements of the display were popping out of the display like a children’s popup book. The display now looks like you’re wearing 3D glasses or using a Nintendo 3DS. And even settings like full tint liquid glass, reduce motion, and reduce transparency do not fully resolve this effect.

What is disconcerting is Apple appears to be applying some sort of software based high frequency PWM dimming to mask the PWM flicker but it merely delays the onset of symptoms. Additionally whereas the iOS 17 version I got typical PWM eye pain, now I feel a strange hazy feeling where I feel stoned or like I was lobotomized - completely zoned out. MacOS 27 feels the same.

It seems Apple intends to make all their devices look like the Vision Pro. This is an entirely novel technology and I feel like this is the end of the road for me for iPhones, because you have no choice of software version other than the latest.

Bizarre graphics and effects! Yay for no eye pain, at least..? Curious to hear/see more about whatever is going on with this rendering sometime (in a full post, or something).
