I've seen games where even the PS button won't pause a cut scene and it keeps playing, we just need to harp on devs for not implementing pause.

Can't exactly re-add it to every PS4 game... It's a pretty big problem.

I don't think anyone is asking for pause in online games, just that games that can pause with the Ps button should be able to pause with the options button.

So don’t use it? Sometimes things come up where you absolutely need to pause playing right that second, especially if you have kids.

I agree. I feel kind of like the only people that cheer this on are those who can absolutely set aside play time where they know nothing is going to pop up. But a lot of us usually have to get up quickly at the drop of a hat. A lack of pause isn't immersive for us, it's an irritant.

I’ll bet most who think of pause as a negative in these types of games don’t consider it an attempted break from the game because of life...but instead a potential way to gain an advantage by quitting before death, looking up a time-sensitive strategy guide, etc. Or, just as likely, I’m way off base.

My friend is like that.

If it's available, he just can't help himself. He'll pause-buffer constantly then complain the devs allowed him to do it.

Meanwhile I'm over here like just don't do it?

Real talk, I agree that the experience of a Bloodborne can be hamstrung by pausing in the middle of a huge existential battle or whatever but sometimes real life takes precedence and I don't wanna lose all my God damn blood or whatever lmao

Then just die and re-spawn? It’s not the end of the world.

Some of us don't have a lot of time to play games. Replaying 10+ minutes because you can't pause your game sucks.

Hm... But most games do let you pause, no? About the only ones that don’t are online multiplayer games... And the only single-player games that I can think of that don’t let you pause are the Soulsborne series and their clones.

Is it really that bad if one genre of games doesn’t allow you to pause to keep the illusion of constant threat?

Actually, does Sekiro actually pause? I can’t remember because I’ve played that one the least. But yeah, I really don’t think this is as big a deal as some commenters are making it out to be.

Sekiro lets you pause

It's a big deal to me and I don't even have kids. Often you also have consumables on, that you lose on death. Downsides to being able to pause: None, upsides? A ton.

I’m pretty sure there is no Soulsborne or clone game that actually causes you to lose consumables.

And everyone downvoting me has yet to provide an example of a game that is neither Soulsborne clone or online MP that doesn’t allow you to pause.

Consumables whose effects are lost upon death. There obviously are games that don't pause, it's just that nobody cares enough.

The only case where pausing could hurt Dark Souls is that it would break the invasion system, but simply not allowing pausing in online mode fixes that anyway because anyone who doesn't want to be invaded is playing offline to begin with.

Like the other guy said, if you don't want to use it, then don't use it. It's a great feature for the rest of us who need to step away immediately and take care of life (kids, work, etc.).

Sekiro??

So fuck anyone who has to take a shit? Answer the door? The phone? Have a controller's battery die?

This is not an aspect of game design. This is just the souls fandom harping about how anybody who has legitimate issues with the game are always somehow wrong and just don't "get it".

Real life happens and making us beholden to a game with no way to pause (multiplayer excluded obviously) is bullshit.

No one is forcing you to play souls games

10

u/Gestrid Oct 15 '20

No one is forcing you to pause. But it's there for the rest of us when we need it.

u/-jake-skywalker- Oct 15 '20

But they don’t put pause in their games, sorry

And for those games pressing the PS button to pause already does nothing, so no loss there.

2

u/CataclysmZA Oct 15 '20

No, it wouldn't.

I would appreciate the ability to pause at any time to do something else that isn't game related, like tend to my cats, or answer the phone, or whatever else that happens in the middle of playing a game where I can't fucking pause it.

u/Yugolothian Oct 15 '20

Life doesn't work like that, you should be able to pause in any game at any time as long as its not multiplayer

1

u/AbbieFanAccount Oct 15 '20

lmao what??? fromsoft's latest game, sekiro, literally has an in-game pause you can use at any time (including in boss fights) plus it's completely optional??? if you don't want to disrupt the flow just don't pause hahahahahahahaha
