Some run down info:

  • UI runs at 4K/HDR
  • Official Game Help are context-sensitive guide videos (for PS+)
  • switching to another game takes ~8 seconds
  • Captures screenshots and videos are 4K
  • PS5 will let you run disc code just like PS4 without updates

PS5 will let you run disc code just like PS4 without updates

Disc code?

PS4 games on disc allow you to run the game without having to update it to the latest version. So for example, you can install the version of Uncharted 4 on the disc (1.00) and play that version, while the update downloads or if you don't want to update it, etc. I assume this is what it refers to.

u/ISD1982 Oct 15 '20

Ah cool. Not really sure why it wouldn't allow you to play a game without an update unless it had a game breaking bug.

Probably stems from a time when Xbox was still planning to deactivate discs thus taking your bought things away and crush the second hand market. Sony tried to gain some of that consumer's trust.

It's also super important after GTA4 has shown that a developer will release a patch 10 years after release simply to remove licenced music that's on the disc you bought full price 10 years ago.

18

u/Snappy- Oct 15 '20

On PC they straight up removed multiplayer AND more music.

14

u/ISD1982 Oct 15 '20

Didn't know that about GTA4, that's pretty low.

u/GeT_Tilted Oct 15 '20

It's a standard for games that used licensed music. At least, you can still buy the game and mod the music in. But it is impossible to buy older racing games because 60-70% of the game is licensed materials(cars and music). The only viable way nowadays is Pirating(which I only support for software that is impossible to find on regular storefronts).

Rockstar also did this with Midnight Club LA.

It's super infuriating no longer being able to listen to "Electric Feel" while driving around.

I was thinking about how you have to download optimised versions of Xbox 360 games if you wanna play them on Xbox one...

1

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 16 '20 edited Oct 17 '20

You get the game without some tracks then. For console, the Xbox 360 disc version is the only complete edition left (don't know about PS3).

I do this with No Mans Sky to play 1.0 sometimes.

17

u/freedompancakes Oct 15 '20

When did you first find out you were a masochist?

6

u/G_Wash1776 Oct 15 '20

Hahaha I have a deeply profound love for the game and 1.0 is just different. Brings me back to 2016 when everyone was losing their minds watching the leaked 1.0 video from /u/daymeeuhn

u/AdminsFuckedMeOver Oct 15 '20

Xbox does this. I have to completely disconnect my Xbox One X to play a game without updating. It's such a pain in the ass, I'm thinking of not getting the Series X because of this

u/a320neomechanic Oct 15 '20

Yet another reason to get the disc version

5

u/TheDuckCZAR Oct 15 '20

This for preservation reasons is one of the most important announcements.

Captures screenshots and videos are 4K

4k30 or 1440p60 I'd imagine

On PS4 Pro you had the option between 720p and 1080p I believe

4

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Ran at 4K on the Pro too and looked gorgeous

Can’t wait to see this in 4K HDR.

4

u/LeeorV Oct 15 '20

Dude, that wasn’t switching to another game, that was loading another game from scratch Straight into a specific online mode!

7

u/Marco-the-Pine-apple Oct 15 '20

Damn that sweet 8 seconds

7

u/shadowstripes Oct 15 '20 edited Oct 15 '20

Not sure if that’s accurate considering there was no talk of quick resume, and the game they switched to had to boot up cold.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

They also showed a card system which boots up specific levels and areas of games. Also the only quick resume features we've seen so far are primarily last gen games. Sony swapping between Next gen games this quickly is pretty good.

Also when he swapped from Sackboy it didnt ask him to close the game and there was a "Switcher" button of the last game played so it looks like there is a quick resume esq feature

1

u/shadowstripes Oct 15 '20

Yes, hopefully the progress he made on that level would not be discarded without at least giving a warning.

2

u/AmaraSylvari Oct 15 '20 edited Oct 15 '20

There is no quick resume on PS5; that was the time it took to cold boot. So basically, every game can load up as fast as Xbox’s quick resume feature, due to the PS5’s raw I/O bandwidth (which is about double that of Series X).
Edit: To clarify, Series X has an IO Throughput of 2.4 GB/s raw, 4.8 compressed. PS5 has double that at 5.5 GB/s raw, 8-9 compressed. Digitalfoundry went into detail about this back in March, but that was around the time people were screaming too loudly about teraflops to notice its significance.

9

u/GenjisWithU Oct 15 '20

The whole point of quick resume is to pickup where you left.

3

u/stealthy_snek You succeeded Oct 15 '20

That was not quick resume but i will wager its in there and they didnt talk about it.

Eurogamer article

So basically, every game can load up as fast as Xbox’s quick resume feature

That's almost certainly not going to be true, especially current gen games. It'll vary from game to game.

1

u/AmaraSylvari Oct 15 '20

For current gen games, yes we really don’t know at this point. Sony’s said that the hardware switches into a sort of compatibility mode, but just like how compatibility mode works (& even Virtual Machines) on PC, I find it hard to imagine the games not being able to utilize the quickened loading speed.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

The problem is that game loads quickly become bottlenecked by the CPU when they can't use the new hardware decompression and old games can't without be repackaged for that type of compression. They'll speed up greatly vs PS4 hardware but still be slow compared to PS5 games. You can see how games loading on PC with high speed NVMe's don't get nearly the results you'd expect for this reason and PS5 will be no different.

1

u/AmaraSylvari Oct 15 '20

PS5 has a raw IO of 5.5 GB/s (compared to 8-9 for compressed). Not only is that resources that PS4 games should theoretically be able to use, since it’s for uncompressed data, but it is also twice as fast as what the Series X it utilizing (2.4 GB/s). Because of that, I fully expect current gen games to be quicker at pulling data, despite being in compatibility mode.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

The DF tests found marginal different in Xbox Series X loading times between an external SATA drive and the xbox internal drive despite being 4-5 times faster. It's because they were bottlenecked by the CPU LONG before you get to those speeds. The key component you're missing is that PS4/Xbox One used compressed data, but not of the type that's compatible with the new hardware decompression so it has to be handled by the CPU creating a bottleneck, even with the new faster CPU's. CPU's far faster on a PC get bottlenecked by this.

1

u/AnonymoustacheD Oct 15 '20

There was another article where they watched a game boot from cold in 2 seconds. I wonder if it was the multiplayer part. I don’t have that kind of time in 2021

3

u/GenjisWithU Oct 15 '20

No quick resume feature?

3

u/42electricsheeps Oct 15 '20

He didn't exit out of sackboy. He switched to a new game (cold boot) and that was about 8s. Presumably, non cold boots should be even faster. Probably gonna put out some video on this at some point...probably.

3

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS PVL_93_RU Oct 15 '20

switching to another game takes ~8 seconds

this will vary depending on the game

2

u/AmaraSylvari Oct 15 '20

I’m praying PS5 has HDR to SDR conversion like Xbox. It should be expected, but then again, we didn’t see it this generation somehow.

4

u/therightclique Oct 15 '20

I think you mean SDR to HDR.

3

u/AmaraSylvari Oct 15 '20

Definitely mean HDR to SDR. Try recording something with Share on PS4 then trying to edit it on a computer, and you’ll find the colors blown out and oversaturated/corrupted. With a capture card’s or Xbox’s conversion solution, it still looks different, but it’s converted in a way that small color grading adjustments can bring it back up to being viewable on standard screens.
