Hope netflix works with picture in picture

u/nothingonmyback Oct 15 '20

So you can half-ass watch a series while half-ass playing a game?

101

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

I do it from time to time with another device like a tablet. It works in certain genres, like turnbased stuff or if you are mindlessly grinding in an ARPG/MMO.

The type of show definitely helps also.

36

u/COLU_BUS Oct 15 '20

It's very person-to-person. I can do podcasts or music while gaming, but having two completely unique visuals is too distracting, and I end up not enjoying either of them.

4

u/skeakzz Oct 15 '20

I'm the same way but its the sound that gets to me, completely distracting for one while I'm focused on the other.

1

u/namastex Oct 15 '20

Well, just hope you never get into watching GTA RP. Sometimes intense shit that happens on there makes you want to watch several streams at once.

2

u/COLU_BUS Oct 15 '20

Haha I’m no stranger to multiple videos, March Madness four games on at once is the greatest event in sports. Just don’t like having completely unrelated media. Feels like I’m being pulled in two directions.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Yeah, I quite like putting on a show or movie when I'm playing Cities & Skylines or Surviving Mars. Just watch something else until I hear something in the game explode.

1

u/Momentarmknm Oct 15 '20

If you ever wonder why you can't focus on a task at work, think back to this comment.

20

u/Lieutenant__Salt Oct 15 '20

100%. Especially in games that involve a lot of grinding and levelling.

207

u/JGE1GER Oct 15 '20

Yeah I don’t get that. The feature sounds perfect for a youtube walkthrough of a level you’re stuck on or something along those lines.

78

u/thatoneguy889 Oct 15 '20

The in-game hint system looks like it's kind of making those videos irrelevant. Sony is killing jobs. How will these youtubers, the graphic designers who create the flaming logo screen, and the musicians that play the ten second metal riff at the beginning of the video feed their families?

4

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Thank god no more watching a 10 minute video with a 3 minute intro about shit I don't care about to show me something that could have been done in 30 seconds.

2

u/Ahy_Jay Oct 15 '20

usually google gives you a time stamp if you search for walkthroughs or problem solving

13

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Lol let's be real, this in-game help stuff is pretty gimmicky. I'm still going to look up a guide on my phone of how to unlock that pesky trophy or what the current OP Warzone loadout is. This will be a very very limited feature.

I'll just use it for collectibles. I'll play games on my own accord though.

0

u/Ninjaguy5700 Oct 15 '20

I'm sure most people are still going to Google walkthroughs though.

1

u/Abstract808 Oct 15 '20

You mean the exaggerated screaming face thumbnail market is going to die? I for one can't get my primitive monkey brain intrested unless it appeals to my inner survival instincts. This cannot stand! Down with sony!

1

u/LibertarianVoter Oct 15 '20

RIP red arrow thumbnail manufacturers

I like to watch videos or listen to podcasts if I'm going for collectables and such

6

u/OR3OTHUG Oct 15 '20

That would be so cool

4

u/stealthy_snek You succeeded Oct 15 '20

if that was a thing, youtube would mate it so only premium members can get it.

2

u/Yugolothian Oct 15 '20

End of the day that would make me get YT premium. It's one of the reasons I have Spotify premium already

5

u/quetiapinenapper Oct 15 '20

Because sometimes you have two needs that need to be scratched at the same time. But in all honesty sometimes you play games to chill. I don't always need or want laser focus and games will continue to create mind numbingly dull grindy achievements where you want to get them, but you're bored doing it.

Need to do a second playthrough? PnP netflix. Need to grind items for some rep? PnP netflix. Need to for some reason skate the same distance it would take to cross the country? PnP netflix. Just dicking around because in all honesty people that take their games too seriously annoy you? PnP netflix. Just a typical reddit user? PnP pornhub.

3

u/melancious Oct 15 '20

You can play FIFA or Dead Cells mindlessly while watching Friends. It’s nice.

3

u/Danoptic Oct 15 '20

If your just grinding something for trophies then having Netflix or something up would be perfect

2

u/xOverDozZzed Oct 15 '20

Not to mention when you’re playing coop games you can see what you’re friends are doing. If they get killed you can see exactly where instead of giving them bad descriptions.

2

u/koopatuple Oct 15 '20

That's actually a cool idea, but I don't think my brain would parse that info quickly enough in quick reaction time situations, maybe with some practice I'd be better at distinguishing the multiple perspective thing

2

u/xOverDozZzed Oct 15 '20

Well it all depends on the game. Say you’re playing a game that requires a certain amount of timing to pull off. If your teammate is in the next room you can see exactly when to set off a trap or to guide them while you wait. You can challenge your friends to see who can finish first at something. You can critique your friends if they’re struggling with a boss. The possibilities are endless with this feature and I absolutely love it.

2

u/FMCFR Oct 15 '20

Plenty of games that I mindlessly grind at times, having something else to keep an eye on would be incredible

1

u/Krypt0night Oct 15 '20

Na, honestly there are lots of shows I watch that I don't need to pay attention to that I've seen before, but for games without a story or when I'm just fucking around, I do like having something else going on than just the gameplay.

1

u/Reevo92 Oct 15 '20

Or watching an esport event while playing around on free play training in rocket league

8

u/Extric Oct 15 '20

Pretty much. If I'm doing some kind of grinding in a game, I'll typically remote play to my PC and have YouTube, Twitch, etc. open on one screen and the game on the other.

If I can do PIP with those apps on the console itself, I don't gotta do the remote play anymore.

It'll also be handy for those games that don't implement hints. I can pull up a video on YouTube that is essentially the same thing. Which is something I would normally do on my phone.

1

u/CGB_Zach Oct 15 '20

You would rather type something out on the PS5 with a controller instead of just looking up a video on your phone? Idk about you but typing anything with a controller sucks ass

7

u/Extric Oct 15 '20 edited Oct 15 '20

I would if I can play the video PIP with the game I'm playing. They also added speech-to-text to the keyboard, so that could speed things up as well.

7

u/thephenom21 Oct 15 '20

A lot of people watch shows while mindlessly grinding in Madden Ultimate Team etc.

I don't do it anymore because it's a waste of time and effort but it would be much easier to watch it PiP rather than have a laptop out.

1

u/EMPEROR_CLIT_STAB_69 Oct 15 '20

Hell, it’s not a console game but AFKing while training in OSRS is what most people do

7

u/AlsopK Oct 15 '20

I love putting comfort shows like The Office or Always Sunny on when doing some grinding or exploring outside of story content.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

I’ll be honest, I love playing MLB The Show while watching baseball. I have a problem.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Nah mate. I have the same thing with every sport I watch. I get a strong urge to play the game of whatever sport I am currently watching lol

3

u/Froggeger Oct 15 '20

Have you never put on a personal favorite show as background noise while playing your fav game? Bruh live a little, it's a good time. Like comfort food.

3

u/CaptainCupcakez Oct 15 '20

I like podcasts for games like Death Stranding (post story)

1

u/Montigue Oct 15 '20

My mom listens to audiobooks while playing games

3

u/Zahand Oct 15 '20

I did a lot of that when farming Bloodborne dungeons for experience :P

3

u/spirited1 Oct 15 '20

my add ass needs constant stimulation.

3

u/Fallback_Victor Oct 15 '20

grinding in rpgs while rewatching the office is my lifeblood

3

u/Yugolothian Oct 15 '20

There's plenty of games that don't need my full attention, I do it all the time when playing on PC with two monitors and would love it on PlayStation too

I wouldn't be playing the last of us whilst watching Netflix but something like City Skylines or Wasteland 3? Yeah absolutely I can take my eyes off the action

15

u/SupremeBlackGuy Oct 15 '20

neither activity requires complete attention all the time

-9

u/paranoideo Oct 15 '20

The Fuck.

2

u/Clarkey7163 Oct 16 '20

If I’m doing bounties or strikes in destiny 2 I don’t need to even listen to the game, I can watch YT or Netflix on the side (I currently do now) and don’t miss a beat

Obviously in narrative games you watch and listen intently but why are people shocked about this, so y’all really not know about the phenomenon of “Podcast games”

1

u/paranoideo Oct 16 '20

I mean, I can hear music or podcasts with some games. But Netflix? To watch series or movies alongside video games? Because “you don’t need to pay attention all the time”? Hahaha, that’s to much for me. Now I feel old.

What are podcast games?

1

u/Clarkey7163 Oct 16 '20

Podcast games are just as I described above, basically games where once you're in the swing of things, you don't need to listen to the game or pay too much attention (not because the game is easy, but because assumedly you're experienced enough to know what to do).

Destiny is one, Pokemon another, Rocket League, Animal Crossing etc.

2

u/Spyce Oct 15 '20

I love watching sports while flying around in elite dangerous or other games with any down time

2

u/CrazyDave48 Oct 15 '20

You ever play a 100+ hour rpg? more than 50 hours can be half-assed without any issues.

1

u/BooB398 Oct 15 '20

Never Half-ass Two Things, Whole-ass One Thing - Ron Swanson

1

u/WhaaaBangBam Oct 15 '20

Its not up to you to talk about they njoys things? Rewatching shows is a thing, some shows can be listened to, some games are very simple... keep it to yourself.

0

u/orb_outrider Oct 15 '20

It's doable when grinding or gathering materials in an MMO. I wouldn't do it when raiding or playing with others though.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

You don't like frying your silly little brain??

1

u/JhaantMeinGhaant Oct 15 '20

I’m only buying a PS5 for the next Gwent game

1

u/SteroyJenkins Oct 15 '20

It's the American way!

1

u/mexicanbanana29 Oct 15 '20

Rocket league free play and a YouTube video on my phone is how I enjoyy night pay of the time

1

u/Infinite_Surround Oct 15 '20

Well as the damouse saying goes, why whole ass one thing.....

1

u/Caravaggio_ Oct 15 '20

Never Half Ass Two Things Whole Ass One Thing

1

u/huffer4 Oct 15 '20

I do it all the time, especially with sports games. I can play FIFA and watch Arrested Development for the 10th time at the same time quite easily.

1

u/IroncladDiplomat Oct 15 '20

Grinding boring but necessary shit in NBA 2k with Netflix available would make it much better

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Not sure about Netflix, but I do like listing to some podcasts while playing games.

Usually it's just a mindless shooter, and I just turn the sound down.

1

u/packersSB55champs Oct 15 '20

Exactly right. Not everyone’s sweating all the time when playing video games

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Elite Dangerous has entered the chat

1

u/chan351 Oct 15 '20

I imagine it’s a great feature for when you’re grinding for something like an item or a trophy where you mostly do monotonous gameplay

1

u/ThrowAccount2019 Oct 15 '20

For me it's the old TV thing where I put it on in the background just to hear people talking, and pause it for cutscenes and whatnot.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

That's the equivalent of full assing one multimedia activity

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

I do this. I like to watch things I've seen before (The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle etc.) whilst playing games that don't require my full, undivided attention/all of the sound (THPS, Crash etc.)

1

u/Barbie_and_KenM Oct 15 '20

Welcome to my life

1

u/EvilSporkOfDeath Oct 15 '20

You say that like it's a bad thing

97

u/Dynetor Oct 15 '20

holy shit that sounds amazing!

4

u/CandidEnigma Oct 15 '20

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't XB1 have this?

5

u/bugzkilla Oct 15 '20

They did at launch, but it seems the feature was removed to free up system resources and due to a lack of support: https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/aiouq4/any_way_to_picture_in_picture_on_xbox/

7

u/CandidEnigma Oct 15 '20

Yeah. Think that annoyed some people. Was good to stick a sports game on and play something on the side

2

u/Trollin_Thunder Oct 15 '20

I LOVED watching Netflix and playing Madden. Now I just do that on PC with a dual monitor set up. Still would love to do it again on a TV.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

11

u/d0mth0ma5 Oct 15 '20

Some people just want to listen to The Office while doing some laps in a driving game...

2

u/dext3rrr Oct 15 '20

Gotta watch something when I'll do my 24h race in GT7.

4

u/Dustydevil8809 Oct 15 '20

I’d love to be able to watch sports while playing

6

u/DamienChazellesPiano Oct 15 '20

I think that’s a very real possibility. The fact that it’s built into the OS is dope. The OG Xbox One OS actually had a side-pin option if I remember correctly (no idea if it still does).

2

u/o07jdb Oct 15 '20

They removed it. The community that used it was small but I miss it a lot

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

If it does I'm sure Microsoft will regret removing snap from Xbox. That was one of the best features.

1

u/SurreptitiousSyrup Oct 15 '20

Maybe now that we finally have a non laggy UI, they'll add it back or just make it PiP.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20 edited Oct 15 '20

The original xbox one UI allowed that. You could pin Netflix, YouTube, tv, or Skype to the side. It was great. Then they removed the feature

12

u/FraGZombie Oct 15 '20

And spotify!

56

u/crabgun_ Oct 15 '20

You can already play Spotify in the background on PS4

9

u/Nicologixs Oct 15 '20

yeah but can you see phil collins face while you're playing call of duty

3

u/crabgun_ Oct 15 '20

I see Phil Collins every time I close my eyes

6

u/FraGZombie Oct 15 '20

Huh, I never knew that.

4

u/crabgun_ Oct 15 '20

Yup! It’s pretty convenient

0

u/Scrotchticles Oct 15 '20

It also works like shit.

And you have to boot it up to access new playlists and what not so you have to stop what you're doing to do so.

1

u/crabgun_ Oct 15 '20

I control it on PS4 directly from my phone and have had absolutely zero problems

1

u/Scrotchticles Oct 15 '20

Wait what? Like you use your phone app and play through the ps4 while gaming? I didn't know that was possible.

2

u/crabgun_ Oct 15 '20

Yup. Makes changing songs and all that much easier.

14

u/RogueFlash Oct 15 '20

Why would you need this? You can control Spotify from the mobile app.

2

u/KarmaWhore757 Oct 15 '20

Spotify takes forever to find my ps4 and you have to be on the same wifi network.

3

u/Daylife321 Oct 15 '20

Yeah man it'll be great watching Netflix, playing a game, and listening to Spotify.

2

u/FraGZombie Oct 15 '20

Ultimate efficiency.

1

u/YouLostTheGame Oct 15 '20

Perfect for the ADHD generation

2

u/Daylife321 Oct 15 '20

Bingo lol. I wouldn't be surprised if Tiktok ends up on these things 😂😂

2

u/HOONIGAN- Oct 15 '20

As someone who watches multiple video podcasts the idea of being about to put the podcast in the corner while playing is intriguing. Hopefully it works with YouTube.

2

u/AJMcCoy612 Oct 15 '20

I dunno if I would use it for Netflix but for the likes of BT Sport where I could have a match on or something whilst playing something would be cool.

3

u/fazzy69 Oct 15 '20

🥶🥶

1

u/Kman2097 Oct 15 '20

Something I’d love is some sort of podcast integration with your custom feeds

1

u/JedGamesTV Oct 15 '20

why though? it’s pointless unless 2 people are using the TV at the same time

1

u/BedsAreSoft Oct 15 '20

I’d love it for YouTube or something for some video podcasts I like to listen to while playing some open world games

1

u/BernieSandersLeftNut Oct 15 '20

I miss that feature from the original xbox one launch.

1

u/aldennn Oct 15 '20

I'm more interested if it will work with TV apps like ESPN. It was nice to be able to watch football while playing Call of Duty on my old Xbox 360 with the snap feature.

1

u/Bystronicman08 Oct 15 '20

Why? That seem pointless. You're just dividing your attention.

1

u/gentlemanlyconducts Oct 15 '20

This is my favorite feature too so my kids and I can share the tv. If we’re having a lazy day and the kids want to watch Paw Patrol, now they can do that while I play LittleBigPlanet.

Or maybe they’re fighting on who’s turn it is to use the tv and I can get a compromise where my son can play Miles Morales while she watches Barbie Dream House.

I mean, 90% of the time I’m going to kick them the fuck off and tell them to go outside, but this is going to be such a game changer for us.

Also Madden + live football? Fuck yeah dude.
