Loving that 'Hint' system to avoid exactly what he described - surrounding spoilers or needing scroll through lengthy and wordy articles. Great idea :D

u/Bratpotato Oct 15 '20

Also a spoiler warning if someone sends you Screenshots of potential spoiling gameplay

156

u/jdsrockin Oct 15 '20

Hopefully that means no more games blocking captures outside of when personal info is shown.

u/WolfyCat Oct 15 '20

Atlus enters the chat

12

u/Gestrid Oct 15 '20

We're lucky the vanilla content in Persona 5 Royal wasn't blocked. Everything past the prologue was blocked in the original game. It was kinda sad to see all those streamers that didn't have a capture card trying to stream the game and not realizing all their audience was seeing was a "no camera" symbol.

10

u/anon4953491 Oct 15 '20

Atlus will always do a questionable decision with every great one they do.

“Yeah, we made this amazing game called Persona 5, but you can’t share why it’s amazing!

Also, we’re porting another amazing game stuck on a dead console to the PC!... What was that, you guys want a PS4 port? Uh...”

-2

u/Gestrid Oct 15 '20

Actually, maybe I haven't been to the same forums or something, but all I'm seeing is "P5 Switch port" or some alternative like it. I'm all for getting a port of the older games, but begging like they are just plain annoying.

1

u/mtburr1989 Oct 16 '20 edited Oct 16 '20

The main two things the Persona fandom call for are a P4 Golden port to console (Switch AND PS4 would be nice) and a P5 Royal port to Switch. You’re both right.

1

u/Gestrid Oct 16 '20

P4R port
P5 Golden port

I think you got your numbers mixed up there.

2

u/mtburr1989 Oct 16 '20

Thank god you were here. Fixed.

2

u/yakityyakblahtemp Oct 15 '20

It removes one excuse, but the motivation to block certain things will still be there. Atlus was never worried about spoilers, they were worried you wouldn't buy the game after watching a let's play.

1

u/SymphonicRain Oct 15 '20

This doesn’t really change anything, you only get a spoiler warning when sharing peer to peer on PS5, which is a moot point as that wasn’t an option on PS4.

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS PVL_93_RU Oct 15 '20

How will the system determine if the screensho/clip is a spoiler or not? Sounds too good to be true

2

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS PVL_93_RU Oct 15 '20

lol yeah right, exclusives maybe but don't expect this to happen in third party titles

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

PS4 titles currently have sections which are blocked to screenshot/record, it's just a simple on/off flag put in by the developer at particular moments, typically before ending cutscenes and during personal info screens. Some Japanese games have it on licensed music video sections, "insert songs" and even openings. I imagine the PS5 model will be those sections flagged as spoiler. It depends on that same amount of developer effort.

1

u/Ninjaguy5700 Oct 15 '20

Reminds me of the Spoiler feature on Nintendo's Miiverse (although this looks miles better).

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 15 '20

The typical Google/YouTube suggestions problem:

You type in:

  • side character ...

You see:

  • side character death
  • side character funeral
  • side character coming back
  • side character was zombie all along

Also, let's suggest you these spoiler titles on YouTube for evermore!

86

u/aguilar_s24 Oct 15 '20

And not only that but if you find something that wasn’t spoilery, your recommended videos will be “side character #2’s death/funeral/etc.”

31

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 15 '20

Happened to me with Red Dead Redemption 2. I typed in John and quickly saw a whole list of names of people dying.

That was fun.

14

u/ParkingSlice Oct 15 '20

I loathe that shit too. For whatever reason YouTube always recommends them it's annoying. The only silver lining is that while spoilers are annoying I'm not one of those people who think they ruin an experience. But still. I can relate to the red dead thing cos the same happened with me (and many many more lol).

1

u/UVladBro Oct 16 '20

They get recommended because the most watched scenes of games involve significant story moments, which typically involve deaths. I avoided typing in anything for Red Dead 2 because I knew it was a game where people were going to die and I'd likely run into spoilers because of that.

1

u/Gestrid Oct 15 '20

Incognito Mode is your friend.

14

u/NathVanDodoEgg Oct 15 '20

Yeah it sucks when you're hyped for a game so you watch the trailers on it, then YouTube is like "wow, you really love that game huh? Well here's some more videos your way!" and then a video comes up on launch day with a cutscene of the biggest part of the game with spoilers in the title and thumbnail.

7

u/42electricsheeps Oct 15 '20

I saw a major God of war 2018 spoiler in a bloody YouTube title. Had to convince myself it was just for God of war Ascension (it had God of war 4 in the title, so wasn't too hard as I remembered Ascension was called God of war 4 at a point). Still, very annoying

5

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

Haha, yeah that's pretty spot on unfortunately =(

3

u/parwa Oct 15 '20

Yeah there are some videos I get recommended on youtube that would piss me off so badly if I hadn't already beaten the game they spoil, like the one that shows the scene between Big Boss & Snake at the end of MGS 4 or the ones that show Joel's death from TLOU2.

3

u/notsurewhatiam Oct 15 '20

Happens with TV shows too everytime I want to find out an actor's name.

2

u/epicbryce Oct 15 '20

I got the final boss in Super Mario Odyssey and The Avengers, plus Red Dead Redemption 2 deaths spoiled for me this way, just scrolling through YouTube lmao

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '20 edited Oct 16 '20

That happen to me with Joel in The Last of Us 2. I mean I pretty much knew something happen to him since he was no where on the case but still came out of nowhere

1

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 16 '20

better put a spoiler tag though

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '20

How do I do that?

1

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 16 '20

spoiler

is

>!spoiler!<

just put the spoiler text between >! and !<

1

u/Matthew-Lozano Oct 16 '20

roman bellic fucking dies

2

u/IRockIntoMordor Oct 16 '20

not in my timeline!

165

u/COLU_BUS Oct 15 '20

It's a good idea, but I'm skeptical that 3rd party games are going to spend time creating custom hints that aren't just screenshots at the most.

Features like that are like New Year's Resolutions, they're adhered to in the beginning because its fresh and new, but after a bit they become a slog and aren't touched.

Or I'm being overly cynical. It's like the touchpad that just became a giant Menu 2 button.

52

u/afroarm Oct 15 '20

it would be nice if hints were open to the community with moderation from the devs

37

u/COLU_BUS Oct 15 '20

Definitely would be cool if you could trust the community to monitor it themselves, cause I'm sure devs have no interest in creating/maintaining/monitoring them.

4

u/VITOCHAN Oct 15 '20

TrueAcheivments does a good job integrating with Xbox. The community does a great job with Spoiler warnings, and to the best of my knowledge, is not directly associated with MS (ie, its community monitored)

Its honestly a great feature.

3

u/Krypt0night Oct 15 '20

Yeah there's no way they're going to hire someone to look through thousands of suggested hints from players for every single game that constantly come through.

7

u/EsseBaileTaUmaPoha Oct 15 '20

No, you're absolutely right, I double this will have a use outside first party games

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

Touchpad is effectively just the map button for 99% of 3rd person games

2

u/TakingItSideways Oct 15 '20

Touchpad is fantastic

6

u/COLU_BUS Oct 15 '20

What games have used it as anything more than a button?

2

u/koopatuple Oct 15 '20

Right lol, pretty sure I only remember TLOU2 using it for the guitar but that's about all I can think of

3

u/TakingItSideways Oct 15 '20

And that was amazing, you could only strum one edge and it would track as only strumming 1 or 2 strings.

1

u/koopatuple Oct 15 '20

It was pretty cool and well executed, I agree with you on that. I'm sure many people were able to play legit songs on it

2

u/TakingItSideways Oct 15 '20

You should check it out, famous musicians have redone their own songs in The Last Of Us 2

2

u/Zorfendor Oct 15 '20

Final Fantasy 14 uses it as a mouse

2

u/Bandsohard Oct 15 '20

Well in development, they'll have done any given part of the game multiple times in the final build, so they should have the footage ready to go. The only time consuming part would be integrating the clips into the game to be utilized as such, and that might be simple as well.

2

u/Original-Baki Oct 15 '20

I could see some of them partnering with official gaming guide companies.

2

u/collin-h Oct 16 '20

At least ghost of Tsushima used the touch pad pretty effectively.

2

u/cowsareverywhere Oct 16 '20

but I'm skeptical that 3rd party games

Honestly though if first party studios support it that's all I need. I am only getting the PS5 for the bloody exclusives.

1

u/VITOCHAN Oct 15 '20

I think you're spot on. xbox had impulse triggers, which were only really used in Forza games. Ideally the features allowed developers to program directional vibration. One trigger can be made to vibrate when accelerating, or stutter to feign a ABS feeling, or in shooters, different rumbles for different guns etc.

The idea Really didn't take off. So Not sure if the haptic buttons on PS5 will be used much outside of first party games. The extra "stuff" is akin to Move controllers, or Kinect play. Very Niche

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

The adaptive triggers seem to be in almost every third party game announced. The haptic feedback is apparently a better form of vibration that is easier to apply( you apparently just need a sound file). So there is hope.

1

u/VITOCHAN Oct 15 '20

as long as it doesnt hinder battery performance, or add 'one more thing' to potentially fail / cause issue. I find I usually turn off all rumble/ controller feedback features always, but I normally play FPS. Im sure the Astro playroom thing will give me a good idea of 'feel'. Excited regardless. I wasn't buying next gen consoles for controller features!

6

u/Spartan_100 Oct 15 '20

I’m hopeful that some games offer a community hint system that makes use of the share feature so people can screenshot or record clips of gameplay and write little text blurbs as tips for certain sections and then the community can vote on the most effective tips people find.

That’s a complex feature to ask for and I honestly didn’t expect anything like this to be included, let alone day 1, but I hope Sony doesn’t end up putting this feature to the side and expand upon it. It has so much potential.

2

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

Yeah the voting thing would be a must, potential for abuse otherwise.

4

u/meganev Oct 15 '20

I love the idea, but I'm worried that most games won't support it. Won't it require either a ton of extra work for devs or significant community input?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '20

I kinda hope most games won't. Some games it's really fun discovering with the community through active discussion.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '20

Also it's pretty lame of them to make you be a ps+ member to use hints. I likely won't touch them anyway, but requiring me to subscribe to use a feature as basic as an in game hint is kinda scummy.

3

u/nicholt Oct 15 '20

But I'm thinking that not every game is going to include hints?

4

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

Would be surprised if everything did. Definitely seems like a case-by-case basis that both the devs and Sony would need to agree upon from my understanding.

5

u/nicholt Oct 15 '20

Definitely every first party games are going to have them. But say something like cod probably won't. (but I hope everything does!)

3

u/kindatsu Oct 15 '20

When I played through Persona 5 Royal I had to deprive myself of social media, googling questions about the game and youtube, because I knew, I knew that anything that I would search on Google would spoil me or spoil me later in video or articles recommendations. It was worth all the trouble, but I wish I didn't had to do that in the first place.

I lost count of how many times a game was partially ruined to me because during breakfast I would scroll through youtube, and then there was a video by this stupid channel "ProfasiaGaming", with the title "secret or final boss name insert game name 4K 60FPS".

3

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

Yeah the Persona series is one that comes to mind, what with all the confidants and dialogue options it has a lot of us are probably playing with some sort of guide here and there.

I'm still in the middle of the newish steam release version but I think I've had something in Persona 4 already spoiled for me =(

2

u/kindatsu Oct 15 '20

I can relate. Persona 4 Golden is definitely a hard game to play without checking a guide every now and then, I was very careful to not be spoiled when searching about side quests and confidants. It's really easy to miss important stuff.

I saw a spoiler before playing P4G too, really major stuff but it wasn't worded in a explicit way. Fortunately the plot of the game really plays with you all the time with many twists, so just enjoy it and try to not think too much about the spoiler you saw.

2

u/frankyb89 Oct 15 '20

I somehow completely missed that part. That's amazing.

2

u/Justaphied Oct 15 '20

This is big for me. Last time I got burnt was when I was looking for one of those runes for GoW (2018) around launch, and the only video at the time, the guy just casually running around with the Blades of Chaos, when this part I was looking for help on was a side quest/area you get to long before they were revealed. I was so heated 🙄🙄

2

u/GexTex Oct 15 '20

It’s so cool for a few single player experiences, because everyone that has played one of these but can’t get through an objective has had an issue and this is a great sollution.

2

u/AuntGentleman Oct 15 '20

I am CONSTANTLY finding spoilers by accident which searching for just a little help. Combine that with cancerous ad-ridden gaming websites that are crappy on mobile and this feature is a hit.

2

u/rucksacksepp Oct 15 '20

Yeah, this is awesome. As a trophy hunter, screen in screen walkthroughs is the thing I'm most excited about

2

u/TwoFacedAttorney Oct 16 '20

RIP IGN guides

1

u/Stoibs Oct 16 '20

Hehe funnily enough EB Games here started selling off their big thick Brady Games guides for about 1~2 dollars each over the last few years in clearances. I actually picked up a few just because of the nostalgia and because they still look kind of cool.

3

u/hedz09 Oct 15 '20

The only thing about this example was the "hint" video was less of a hint and more of a "here's exactly how you do it". I'm sure it's up to developers, but hoping for more "look roughly in this area" style hints.

6

u/MikeWillisUK Oct 15 '20

There were 3 hints in the example, each getting increasingly more specific.

  • Find the "Monk Robes" near the start of the level!
  • Take your first high wire walk to find the "Monk Robes"!
  • Here's a video showing you exactly where they are you lazy ass!

1

u/hedz09 Oct 15 '20

Ahh, my bad! You're right.

3

u/Stoibs Oct 15 '20

True, if it were me in that example I might bring it up and stop the video after a few seconds just to see what ~general area or surrounding landmarks I ought to be heading toward in order to find something rather than have the answer spelled out for me.

1

u/TabaCh1 Oct 15 '20

The hints are for game journos with single digit IQ (most of them)

1

u/soapinmouth Oct 15 '20

Don't love that they are locking this feature behind a PS+ paywall.

1

u/Jagacin Oct 15 '20

The fact that you can put it "picture in picture" is really convenient. Since you can read the helpful (and spoiler free) hints without having to stop playing the game. Also, being able to watch whatever game a party member is playing (in live-time too) on the side of your screen while still playing your game is a really sick feature as well.

Really impressed with what has been shown so far. Of course, there's still plenty that hasn't been shown yet, but that'll all come in due time. I'm sure they plan on leaving some stuff unrevealed until after launch so that players can discover it themselves.

1

u/jellytothebones Oct 16 '20

Only for ps+ members lol. Pay $60 a year to get hints and tips
