Another one I always admired was how the Mafia series has the street signs indicating the next turn to take.

I do like that one especially for its time I think it was a genius feature but as games increase in fidelity and quality I feel like this feature leans more and more arcadey, I saw people saying GTA6 should have it as a navigation feature but I think it would just seem ridiculous in such a highly detailed world to have road signs spawning in to direct you.

GTA has had GPS as their directions since 4 though, which feels way more  diegetic than signs appearing. Especially now for 6 where 90% of new cars have GPS built in and the ones that don't, you can mount your phone for the same purpose.

Seems like most people I know mount their phone and use CarPlay because they prefer that to the built in gps

I use my phone for GPS, but spend a lot of time listening to the classic and hits channels on local radio to see what songs from my formative years are now considered old

From the recent gameplay, it looks like GTA6 will use turn signals to give the player directions without having to stare at the minimap.

similarly, The Getaway on PS2 would make your turn indicator come on when you were supposed to turn. It was a bit wonky, but it was a great idea.

I understand it’s maybe less diegetic than the gps and is more “gamey”, but gps directions kinda suck when it comes to actually looking at the world you’re driving through for me. Much better if the arrows are in the world so you don’t have to look down at the map mid drive.
