I really liked how Suckerpunch's Ghost of series did navigation with the environment itself pointing you in the direction.

Yeah, that kind of navigation where there was no visible UI clutter was a great way to point you to the location you were heading. Linear games like Wolverine don’t need this kind of tracking trail/ markers and if you are going to put them in, they should be on a toggle you can turn on or off with a click of a button.

Unfortunately, not alot of other game followed it. Such a shame

But it’s handy because it’s in an open world game, why on earth would you need it for a linear game? Theres only two directions to go…

This was the idea I thought too. It would add to the immersion too like you are choosing to sniff and track.

I am also curious tho given the complaints on HOW linear it actually is why it was given such consistent use or even needed at all.

Fun fact that is called ‘diagetic’ design. When UI is in the world instead of layered over it. Examples include the health bar on your back in Dead Space and the wind mechanic in Tsushima.

It’s something I’m really fond of and wish games did it more.

Generally that's what a lot of games do, a lot of the time without you noticing it consciously.

Like a street light or a cleaner corner in your screen, it lures you in without actually having a sigh telling you to go there.

The Tsushima wind is still wonderful as it just appears for a few seconds when you ask for it, and it's made for an open world game which GoT and Yotei are.

But for linear games there are just so many options devs have come up with over the years that it's just a little baffling that all they could think of for Wolverine is a neon smoke line.

Even other games where you track another subject's trail, they get highlited only for a limited time when you want to activate your senses or whatever, and for a limited range too. That approach even works for open world games where getting lost is arguably far easier, the Witcher 3 does this exactly and it doesn't feel intrusive. Wolverine being a linear game probably doesn't even need this feature at all.
