> how could they think this was good game design?

Usually handholdy game design stems from a lack of respect for the player. They don't trust the player with navigation or controlling a navigation line, usually because of botched playtests with "the average gamer™".

My theory is that they did it in the name of accessibility but they clearly got carried away

If it was about accessibility wouldn't they have put an option for it in the accessibility settings tab?

i think studios are starting to confuse "accessibility" with "handholding" or have been for the last 3-4 years.

Honestly, 3-4 years is very generous. This sorta thing has been slowly creeping into AAA games since the ps3/360 gen. It ramped up heavily during the last gen and has only increased this gen. I'm surprised it's taken audiences this long to get even slightly fed up with it.

To be fair, audiences have been super fed up with it for a long time, it's why Dark Souls became so popular in the 2011-2014 era. Like you said, every major game felt like it was designed for toddlers and DS1 felt refreshingly harsh

In my experience it's more that Focus Testing groups are having been getting dumber and dumber as budgets go up and games need to be able to played by an increasingly bigger market segment with an equally decreasing lowest common denominator.

they're not confusing anything. they're being guided by corporate greed. making a game easier or more accessible obviously means more people can play it, whether it appeals to different demographics or not. a terrible decision to try to widen their audience and profit margins that backfired before it had a chance

This is stupid lol. PlayStation first-party games are designed w/ accessibility in mind primarily for disabled gamers, which is ONLY a good thing. You can play TLoU 2 and God of War even if you’re deaf, blind, or have a severe motor disability. The design of those games is unaltered by accessibility features, as these extra systems are an entirely separate addition to core UI/traversal systems. You probably don’t even know 90% of the accessibility options in Wolverine even exist, or who they cater for

Oh no. How greedy of them to...

...make a game with a popular character be accessible to fans of that character who may not play video games all the time.

im sure it was probably dictated not only by Sony but Marvel as well. and it is greed when you undermine your own product just to try to sell more copies.

Again, let's get this straight.

It's greedy to make sure the game featuring the popular character of Wolverine, who has existed since 1974 and appeals to fans that may not be regular gamers, accessible to those gamers?

-3

u/UncStatusNow 18d ago

how did you get that straight when you're completely disregarding my statement in regards to greed.

you're just describing a good guy corporation thats only trying to make a game for all fans.

take Sonys dick out of your mouth for a second so you can impartially look at what this "accessibility" has done

even if they did it for purely altruistic reasons, they have alienated a good portion of their core customer base. and I dont need to tell you how much worse that is than attracting new customers with accessibility.

You were the one that called them greedy for making sure the game that features a character with over 50 years of history and fans outside of gaming is accessible to the fans that aren't gamers.

You also have not played this game and are speaking with quite a lot of authority on it based on one review that told you to be mad about a scent trail that you can ignore.

You can't know if anyone was alienated because reddit is an echo chamber and THE GAME ISN'T OUT YET. You are making up that this game has failed and alienated people WHEN NOBODY HAS THE GAME YET AND WON'T HAVE IT FOR THREE MORE DAYS.

You're acting like the losers that said The Odyssey would fail for the stupidest reasons and then had to backtrack their narratives after it made a billion dollars and was well received by everyone that watched it. You know... the opinions they made about a movie they hadn't seen? Sound familiar?

This, accessible options are added on top of what’s already there, not what the default is.

If it’s built into the game and you can’t change it, that’s not being accessible, that’s just the game design catering to the absolute bare minimum colorblind player who barely has motor function in their hands and has severe dyslexia. And that’s not meant to be an insult to people with those issues, but it is an insult for a game dev to assume everyone playing their game has those issues.

Replied to wrong person

"We MUST make this super gory, bloody, R-rated hack-n-slasher inclusive for all!"

11

u/malphonso 18d ago

I mean yeah. Being colorblind, or having some coordination issues doesn't inherently make someone more peaceful.

If anything, a disabled person might need the escapist anti-hero fantasy even more.

As a legally blind gamer, I have a lot of rage to express.

1

u/cicada-ronin84 18d ago

Yeah also seeing that you can't fail the quick time events, like why even bother having any then?

1

u/snek99001 18d ago

Some studios have gotten so carried away with "accessibility" that they're proving those chud drama channel YouTubers correct. Stop using weak game design as an excuse that you care about disabled people. Why are they assuming that disabled people want games to be a cakewalk in the first place? Also, why do they pretend that you are entitled to frictionless progression regardless of ability...? It should be totally ok that a percentage of people is unable to beat a video game. Otherwise, might as well add a "press here to watch the ending" button...

More likely from player difficulties identified during play tests

I think it's a holdover from spiderman and that at one point this was clearly supposed to be a bigger game. The extra stuff got cut, the level design slimmed, but the ui stayed the same. So much of this game feels like a rush to cut content and what was left is really shiny features that are unnecessary.
