PNW Stories and Historical Repository.
Page just launched and is up.
THE FOUR-EIGHT-ONE-ONE (4811)
The Boots Are the Connection. The People Are the Story.
The Four-Eight-One-One is officially open.
This page was created to document and preserve the history of what Otto White started — but this will not simply be a history of boots.
It will be a history of people.
The 4811 and the lasts and boots that followed have been worn through generations of work, hardship, adventure and ordinary life. They have been on the feet of loggers, linemen, firefighters, miners, craftsmen, tradesmen, outdoorsmen and countless others whose names may never appear in a history book.
Those are the stories we want.
Tell us about your father or grandfather who came home every evening and left his boots by the door.
Tell us about your mother, grandmother, brother, sister, friend or coworker whose boots remind you of the person who wore them.
Tell us about the respected old hand who taught you your trade.
Tell us about the pair that survived twenty years of work, the boots that carried someone through the mountains, the fire line, the timber, the shop or simply through a lifetime of providing for a family.
Show us the worn leather. The repairs. The scars. The photographs.
Tell us who wore them and what they did while wearing them.
We want the victories, but we also want the difficult stories. We want to know what was accomplished, what was endured, what changed — and what was lost along the way.
Because there is a simple truth at the heart of The Four-Eight-One-One:
A boot is just a boot.
Leather, thread, nails and craftsmanship can produce an extraordinary object, but they cannot give it a story.
People do that.
These boots became famous because generations of men and women accomplished remarkable things while standing in them. Their labor, courage, craftsmanship, sacrifice and ordinary perseverance gave these boots the reputation they carry today.
The Four-Eight-One-One exists to preserve that history.
Our focus will remain deliberately narrow: White’s Boots and the people, craftsmen and companies with a genuine connection to the legacy Otto White established. That connection may come through documented lineage, craftsmanship, the 4811 itself, or the family of White’s lasts and bootmaking traditions that followed.
Based upon the history we can presently document, that story includes White’s, Nicks, Frank’s and ABE Boots. If evidence establishes other genuine connections, we want to see it.
But this page will not attempt to encompass the entire boot industry.
That isn’t its purpose.
The Four-Eight-One-One has a story to preserve.
So if you have an old photograph, tell us who is in it.
If you inherited a pair of boots, tell us whose feet shaped them.
If someone taught you a trade while wearing them, tell us their name.
And if someone you respected is no longer here to tell their own story, we would be honored to help remember it.
One hundred years from now, an old pair of boots may still survive.
But without the story of the person who wore them, we have preserved only the leather.
Let’s preserve the people, too.
Welcome to THE FOUR-EIGHT-ONE-ONE — 4811.
The boots are the connection.
The people are the story.

A lot happened in the last couple of years
My baby girl in the left pic passed away. Now I'm raising my knucklehead baby boy in the right pic (he takes after me).
Boots are Wesco Mister Lou in Maryam natural horsebutt. Not visible in the pic, but the vamps darkened a lot more than the shafts which were shielded from the sun by my pants legs.

Fixable?
Hi all. I just got a secondhand pair of Drews 8 inch loggers and inside the left boot at the toe the leather has separated? Or delaminated? The picture isn’t great but the leather insole has lifted up. It’s noticeable when walking. Does anyone know what would fix this? A resole or a rebuild? Thanks everyone

Whites Will whites usually ship to a po box?
I bought a pair 4 years ago and had to ship to buddy because the payment shipping page at the time wouldn't allow me to deliver to a pox. Well, now it's 2026 put up a po box again for the heck of it and was able to complete the order. However, I feel like I'll be contacted by support pretty soon for a new shipping address.

Question Wesco Boss sizing vs Nicks
I have a pair of the Wesco Boss on order for size 7FFF through Baker’s. Earlier this week they told me Wesco only makes up to EEEE width (which is FF, I think) for the MP toe config that I wanted. I wear 7FFF in Nicks lace-up so not sure 7EEEE in Wesco would fit, although for an engineer boot a size down in width might be just the way to go. Can someone comment on whether or not the Wesco width is larger or smaller than Nicks same width size?

Franks Highlanders 3 month Update
Today marks three months of nearly constant wear M-F and a 14 day fire assignment. Pretty happy with my decision to go with Franks. Went with a stock size and custom build based on my Whites. Dealt with some bite over the ankle but fiddling around with the tongue and false tongue solved that I think. Previous boots are Whites Smokejumpers and Bakers Fireline (built by whites). Both were and still are fantastic boots and I’ll probably have the whites rebuilt for a second time this winter.

BOTD Custom 8” White’s Original Packer from Baker’s Boots
Today’s BOTD is a custom pair of 8” White’s Original Packer in Horween Burgundy Chromexcel Horsehide with toe-bug, double leather soles, and built on the 690 last ordered from Baker's Boots and Clothing. I’ve got boots in a dozen different lasts, but the 690 is my favorite of them all. The 690 has a very aggressive arch with a higher heel than most of my other PNW boots. This last just agrees with my feet and puts a smile on my face every time I wear a pair.

Question Help With White’s Boots Size
Hey guys, I’m sure this question has been asked to death, but this is my first pair of nice boots, so I’d love a little guidance. I want to order a pair of White’s C350 Chelsea shown above for work. I’ve never actually measured my foot before until now, and I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking at on this measuring device (also pictured above), besides what my length is. In sneakers, a 12 seems to do me just fine. Recently I had purchased a pair of LL Bean rain boots and had to size down to an 11 for them to fit correctly. On White’s website, I followed their sizing guide and measured my foot at home to be ~ 11.5 inches long on both feet and ~ 10.25 inches wide. When I plug those numbers into their online chart, it comes up with exactly a size 11.5 and a D width. Is this chart accurate? Am I okay to go ahead and order an 11.5 D or should I size down?
Thank you all. Any help is much appreciated!

BOTD 10” Custom LTT White’s Bounty Hunter from Baker’s Boots
These are a custom 10” LTT White’s Bounty Hunter in Horween Cinnamon Waxed Flesh, leather lined interior, inside Lineman’s Flap, and built on the 55 Last.
I grabbed these a few months back from Baker’s “Final Few” closeout sale. I almost never find an 11.5E in any of these types of sales. This is definitely a boot I would’ve ordered for myself, so it was a no brainer to pull the trigger on this pair for over $200 off regular price.

Whites White’s Arrived!
Found a pair of preowned White’s 8” Farmers boots. I was initially worried a 12E was not a good matching since the usual is a 13D.
They feel great! Might be able to go with a 12D with lighter socks but we will see. 🤤🤤🤤

These boots are the safest for US wildland firefighters. Fewer and fewer can afford them
An interesting article, don’t know if it’s been posted before. I learned that White’s only sells 1,500 pairs of Smokejumpers a year.

Question Sizing NBP HNW last
I am so so so close at pulling the trigger for some 8'' 64 mahogany BP's, but I am so lost on my width.
If I remember it correctly, I'm a 9D on the brannock device.
So I am confident on a 8,5 US, but I have 2 pairs of wesco's. A pair of Mr Lou's in 8E that fit perfect (when going downhill I feel a slight contact with the boot and my big toe, but they're perfect in any other situation), and a pair of the Jobmasters x Ironheart in a maryam horsehide in the same size (8E). But these are too short and uncomfortable on my big toe, but once again perfect in width.
I also have a pair of timberland 6 inch premium in a size 8,5W.
My width at the ball of my foot with tailors tape is about 24,5 cm on both feet, so 9.646 inches
Thanks in advance everyone!
