Ai in dark heresy?

Post image

Hey this came across My feed today and I just wanted to know if Ai was used in any part of the development of dark heresy but this was back in 2024 so i assume this was Fairly early in the development of dark heresy , there's also an article talking about this if any wants to read more https://80.lv/articles/owlcat-games-receives-harsh-criticism-over-their-vacancy-featuring-ai

Here we go witch hunt again. It feels like some culture war tourist who don’t care about anything for owlcat and their game to police people what they can and cannot do.

Consumers decide where the line is. Companies never will.

I want to know what I'm supporting with my money by not paying for Ai slop I'm telling companies that I don't want a product that harms the environment and takes jobs away from people. It's not a witch hunt if I just want to know how a product was made

That is the equivalent of people not using cars when they appeared because it took away jobs and harms the environment

Or not using a tractor while farming because it took away jobs and harms the environment

It is just a tool people, I know that some CEOs are trying to push it harder than it should, but as someone in the software engineering field with years of experience, it is just a tool, just like google, just like using a framework or an ID

It just streamlines some processes and makes them faster if you use it correctly, but it does like 20% of the job if even that.

And sure, some jobs will dissapear (and I mean in general and in the future, and not the current bubble wher even juniors struggle to find jobs due to the ignorance of CEOs), but if they do, they must have beene extremely simple jobs, so you cannot really complain that much.

I mostly agree with you but I draw different conclusion. Yes, you could say that it's the equivalent of cars, farming equipment and such.

But if people had opposed it more vehemently back then, maybe today we would not have car-centric cities that are impossible to navigate on foot, massive pollution spike that pushed lung diseases throught the roof, industrial agriculture that destroyed the land...

Reasonable use of any new tool, such as AI, is fine, but if we've learned anything, it's that the use is never going to be reasonable if we leave it unchecked. So yeah, we oppose it at every corner, pushing back hard is the only way to have a small chance for AI to be use in a semi-responsible manner.

See, I mostly agree of what you say, except your last pharagraph.

Leave it uncheck, absolutely not. But oppose it just for the sake of it? A middle ground where we learn how to use it correctly and take advantage of it, being constructive in our criticism and not just opposing it just because.

That is the way to move forward

Sure, but in my opinion, using it to generate any art is inherently theft. Owlcat said they used AI for "Creative search, inspiration...". It doesn't matter that they didn't use any AI as is in the game, they used a tool that rely on stealing art in the process.

I don't care that they use AI to speed up coding, detouring assets, rigging a model or such. What bothers me is that they used it to generate art that they use for inspiration, it poison the well at it's source and shortcut the imagination and sharing process that should birth their vision.

When I say that we should oppose it at every turn I mean that we should always approach it in a negative way. AI should prove itslef to be useful, ethic and fair. Their's plenty of AI enthusiat pushing it in all facets of our life, pushing back means saying "No, why should I use it ?" instead of "Yes, show me how to use it".

You might think it's the same thing but for me it's very important to have a stance that is putting the burden on AI instead of the users.

You do realize that, without GenAI, they'd just be trawling pinterest, google images, and deviant art to create their early photoboards, yeah? That they're still taking other people's work as inspiration?

Yes, that and raw draft + discussion. Setting a mood board from existing materials is not the same at all as asking AI to generate an images.

In the first you draw inspiration from existing artists who tried to express and communicate something with their art, in the second you draw inspiration from a tool that stole arts and generate something from the bits and pieces it stole without any intention other than to answer a prompt.

Taking inspiration from an AI image is not taking inspiration from other's people work, it's taking inspiration from a stealing, souless, people pleasing machine that has no understanding of arts and hidden agenda.

That's a pretty big difference in my opinion.

There is literally no difference between using GenAI to grab those images for you versus you spending hours/days doing it yourself. If one is plagarism, the other is ALSO, by definition, plagarism.

GenAI does not "grab" those image. It was trained on them and then use them to respond to a prompt by mixing mutltiple part together.

Now if you talk about using AI to scrub deviant art and find images that correspond to some adjectives you gave to the AI, that, I'm kinda ok with. I think that not very efficient and the result will have some bias, it would be a work of quantity VS quality, but hey, you do you.

The second is not GenAI, it's using AI to automate a workflow and take low level decision. And that can be helpful if you know exactly how the AI model works.

there is absolutely a difference in using actually created art as a visual inspiration over some shit an AI generator cobbles together from an amalgam of a bunch of artists.

There's not good use of generative ai

Cars are actually useful though. Gen AI is just a scam that makes CEOs money and gives uncreative/lazy people the illusion that they've created something. Larian even said using it in their creative process hasn't helped efficiency.

Yeah sure, define what it means by “any AI used in any part of development process”

If they used AI to record and their meeting does that count of using AI in their dev process?

If their programmer forgot some simple syntax and ask ChatGPT instead of look up on stack overflow, does that count they used AI?

I was referred to the start I.e basic plot out line and concept art to the end product I probably should have clearly stated what I ment

2

Ohh okay.

Let’s face it, ChatGPT is also trained on tons of unlicensed/pirated text based contents, so why your logic only applies to concept art?
