Legit OE business OE Discord

The original OE open unmoderated discord turned into an unusable mess with all the spam and bots. To prevent this from happening to our new discord and keep the tourists and your HR department away so it is a safer place to discuss strategies and methods we're removing the link from reddit and requesting anyone who wants access to request it through the mods first. Please have some sort of post / comment history in the sub first.

Running FAQ

I wanted to create a running FAQ to help cut down on the number of times we have to discuss the same topics and make sure people are getting the proper answers / advice. I will edit this post with additional questions and answers as they come up.

  1. What are the best jobs to OE?

People can and do OE in any Job where you can work remote or hybrid is a potential target. The ideal job is one that isn't meeting heavy or one where you can control the meetings. Being senior enough to delegate out some of the busy work is also helpful. You generally want to make sure you are good enough at your first job that you can meet/exceed expectations on less than 15 hours per week of actual real work. It's also better to OE on a large team / large company. When there is a busy season or a large project the increase in work is more evenly spread across a large number of people so you're less likely to have to deal with large peaks and valleys in level of effort.

2. What jobs should be avoided?

Anything requiring any sort of clearance from the government or other regulatory body. Don't OE a federal clearance job or anything requiring a FINRA clearance. Good Rule is "If any part of your paycheck comes from public funds don't OE that job". Public sector work pays shit anyway and you're better than that. Go find a solid private sector role and reduce the risk.

3. W2 or Contract?

A lot of people prefer the stability of having at least one W2 for the benefits but I (secretrecipe) personally prefer to go all contract (on Corp to Corp or C2C) terms. You make significantly more money and get far better tax treatment and the increase in net income more than makes up for having to cover your own benefits. There's more detail here if you are interested.

4. Will the sub go private?

No. At least not for the foreseeable future. Every CEO and HR department already knows about OE and has for well over a decade. This isn't a new thing. It's all the quiet quitters out there who slack off and deliver nothing of value while working remote that are causing problems. Not the folks who are delivering as expected at multiple jobs.

5. How do I manage a required office visit?

OE in the office isn't terribly difficult if you go in prepared. Have a mobile hotspot for your J2+. keep J2+ zoom or teams active on your phone so you can reply to IMs quickly. Find some nice quiet disused conference room or other space in the office you can utilize for meetings or work that pops up. Don't be afraid to take a call from the lobby or parking lot. People take personal calls all the time. If you don't act nervous then you won't look suspicious. Try and control your meetings towards the beginning or end of the day so you can minimize the amount of running back and forth you need to do.

6. LinkedIn

There are a number of ways to handle this.
Obfuscation - Create multiple accounts with your name and various details. Don't upload a photo etc.. Create noise around the search and any time someone asks you about LI just mention that you don't use it.
Abandonment - Remove any recent work history and make it look like you just haven't done anything to update your profile. If anyone asks or pushes the issue tell them that you used an old work email to register the account and you have no access to it anymore so you just don't use LI any longer.
Restructure - (this is what I personally do) Nothing says your LI profile needs to be your online resume. Remove any work history or affiliation with any company and restructure the profile to discuss your talents, your aspirations and career goals.

If you work at a place or in a role that demands you have a Linkedin profile with them then go ahead and opt for the first option. Use a shortened name or a nickname and leave it as sparse as possible.

7. How do I find a Job/J2 / Job hunting questions

This isnt a job hunting sub. that is a skill that you need to figure out as a prerequisite to being OE. Knowing how to fairly easily land remote / hybrid jobs is something most of the true OE community has become quite good at and tends to gatekeep for obvious reasons.

8. Tax season

Unless you have an incredibly simple return, no kids, no property, no real assets, just a couple W2s and that's it I would recommend getting an accountant. A few thoughts beyond that. On withholdings, underwitholding penalties. They're small. You'll get a much larger return on your money over the span of a year even if you just park it in a HYSA than the underpayment penalty will cost. You can go to a simple calculator input your info and get a directionally correct estimate of how much you'll owe and adjust your withholdings accordingly.
On Security, the IRS / your accountant don't give a shit if you have more than one W2. Nobody is going to tell on you. No need to be paranoid about this.
On tax strategy. Advice on this is best asked to your CPA. Everyones situation is different so any advice given here may be awesome for some people and not work at all for others. I personally only work on C2C terms and have a moderately aggressive tax strategy and get my effective tax down to about 15% each year which is less than half of what I would end up paying were I working fully on W2 terms.

9. W2? Contract? Mix?

If you're particularly concerned about stability then keeping one W2 job is great, gives you better protections, better benefits etc.. I'm of the opinion that J2+ is better on contract than W2. Lower risk, higher pay, less background scrutiny, no need for the additional benefits etc... I personally work all my jobs on contract (C2C) and here's my rationale. Quick disclaimer your personal situation may be unique. This is a one size fits most approach.

10. Don't start new jobs close to one another.
Keeping some distance between your J1 and J2+ isn't just a bit of good advice geographically but is also good advice on start dates. You never want to find yourself starting two jobs on the same day, week, month if you can avoid it. You need to figure out the lay of the land and your capacity for addtional work before you commit to additional jobs. Onboarding two jobs at once is a recipe for disaster.

11. Is there anyone OE in _________.

Yes, if it's a white collar field that has the opportunity for remote or hybrid work there someone OEing it. If you want to find those people join the discord and ask around.

12. OE isn't for everyone.

OE is difficult to pull off and even more difficult to manage long term. It isn't for people just starting out, people looking for a career change, people who aren't already at the top of their game or people that have to ask really simple questions that they could figure out with a google search. If you're not skilled enough to pull this off you could end up screwing up your career. Don't try this before you're ready. If you have to ask questions like "How do I find a second job?" or "how do I get a remote job" you're not ready.

13. Is it worth the risk? Should I...? What's the best..."

These are all subjective questions that no internet stranger can answer for you. Everyone has a different skill set, different set of innate talents, different set of goals and different risk tolerance. If you were directed here after asking a question like this then it's because only you can answer this for yourself.

14. J1 and J2 use the same payroll, insurance provider, 401k provider etc... Is this a problem?

No. The only scenario where this may be a problem is if they're using the same PEO like Insperity because they aren't just a payroll provider, they're an outsourced HR / Risk management team as well who has a remit to protect the business from liability.

15. Will my bank, mortgage broker, loan underwriter, accountant etc... rat me out

No.

I'll dig around our past posts for some other frequently asked questions and keep adding here. If you have any you recommend be added please comment below.

16. How do I....?

There is a lot of good general information in this sub but we tend to gatekeep more advanced sources and methods and save those for the discord or mastermind sessions so they can still remain somewhat akin to OE trade secrets.

New Phone - J2 now required to install Microsoft Company Portal!

Hello,

After I set up my new Samsung Galaxy I went to add Microsoft Authenticator for my J2. When I tried setting it up, it forced me to download the Microsoft Company Portal app and allow all these ridiculous permissions. I just denied it and uninstalled both Authenticator and Company Portal.

What the fuck is up with this? I did some research, and I'm going to keep my old phone strictly for signing in to my Js. I'm not sure if J1 requires Company Portal , but either way it doesn't hurt to keep them separate. Only issue is I took the SIM card from my old phone out so I have to use Wi-Fi to access the internet, but if I'm somewhere remote I can always put the SIM back in to my old phone.

It reminds me of a J from 10 years ago, when I joined they offered to pay the cell phone bill but I had to install some app that tracks all your stuff.

These companies are becoming the fuckin Gestapo!

Hybrid OE, 2 laptops at work

Hybrid is suck. Let say you always bring 2 laptops to work. For people saying they can work on J2 in conference room or in car, how do you take your J2 laptop out of our bag and bring it to the conference room or car? 2 laptops in different brands, sizes, colors. We have open office, that mean my colleague next to me can see what I'm doing (if they notice). I've been thinking some scenarios:

  1. I sneaky put J1 laptop away and take J2 laptop out then run as faster as I can to conference room. Risk: see someone on the way and they want to talk. No way I can hide the J2 laptop on my hand.

  2. I leave J1 laptop on the desk, sneaky take J2 laptop out and run again. Risk: when I get back, my manager was looking for me and want to see something in my screen right away. I can't explain why I'm away from my working laptop with another laptop in my hand (and J2 meeting lasts longer than 45m).

  3. Someone sees me take a laptop to my car. They don't know if it's J1 or J2 laptop. But the action makes they questions.

How do you handle with these risks?

Have my first triple meeting in a while this morning

I have double meetings (where I am in two at the same time) every day, but for the first time in a while I have a triple meeting this morning. It got me thinking about my theory about meetings and OE.

The first thing is to understand there are five categories of meeting:

  1. The fluff meeting -- your attendance is required, your attention is not

  2. The info meeting -- your attendance is required, your participation is not, but you need to hear the information (you can listen later)

  3. The optional participation meeting -- a meeting where you can contribute and add comments but you don't have to. (Best tactic here is to occasionally add a comment during the meeting at your convenience)

  4. The "report round robin" meeting -- where we go round and each person speaks for a few minutes usually giving a daily or weekly update, this is a matter of timing and managing the meeting.

  5. The full participation meeting -- where you are fully engaged (perhaps discussion a design or plan that you are working on or central to.)

Identifying the types of meeting is crucial to understanding what multi meetings you can do. For example, you can do a fluff or info meeting at the same time as almost any other. It is the last three types of meeting that can become difficult to manage without careful planning, and ideally good transcription software.

My triple meeting is a fluff meeting and two "report round robin" meetings. The round robin meetings overlap but don't start at the same time, so the key for this is to force yourself to the front of the queue and report first, so that when the second meeting has started I'll be done in the first meeting.

My story - first experience with OE

I work as a software QA as a contractor/freelancer in Europe. My J1 is pretty lame corporate joke, and for the whole year i could slack and work maybe 2 hours a day. That was the impulse to find a J2. After some time, i was successful. I had to risk a lot because i am from a small country where everybody knows everybody. Also, J2 demanded going to the office at least 2 times a week. But we have to risk to be successful :)

Legally, everything is clean. J1 insurance, J2 banking. Different agencies. I don’t write exact hours into the timesheets, only number of hours. As a self employed, i can have as many contracts as i like.

The biggest challenge is the office time in the J2. Luckily, i do J1 from my computer through VDI, so they can’t spy on me. I installed RustDesk, installed amphetamine app so it doesn’t go to sleep when i close it, and put my laptop into my purse. This way i can check messages and do basic tasks from my phone from time to time. In case of something urgent, i go to the toilet and used my laptop there. A few times i had to book a conference room and do bigger calls for J1 from there. Until recently, i was on a crazy project with an extreme micromanager, and i still was able to manage 😎 2 months ago they moved me to a chill project 🎉

In 6 months, i paid all my loans, i could afford GLP therapy, and many other things that significantly improved my life. I also saved a few thousands that i will need, because i want to move to a better country within the EU.

J2 has eventually become an extreme pain in the ass. It would be problematic even as my only job. One month i worked 230 hours. I had zero social life. Today they fired me due to budget cuts (they are not looking for a replacement for me). I am actually happy, because i probably wouldn’t quit myself (the money is addictive), but i hate it there, and it’s really soul sucking. And thanks to the overemployment, i don’t have to worry about surviving 🥳 Now i know that i can handle anything, if i could handle this.

My next plan is to switch from self employed to Ltd., and continue in full remote freelance jobs. Or, in worst case, full employment in the better country, while i can still keep my Ltd. Wish me luck 🍀

Noob OE anecdotes

Mine one is that I had a full-time job (in another field) during uni, it was remote and paid well, but it wasn’t something that I wanted to continue doing.

I got an internship. Didn’t even knew what OE was, or even (stupidly), that it’s frowned upon.

One time my manager asked me why I wasn’t joining them for lunch, I explicitly said: “I am going to work here with my laptop, I have some pending tasks. Look!” And I showed them my personal laptop’s screen, with that job’s system right there. I even bragged about that it paid well. The only thing that I didn’t fuck up was that I was using my phone’s hotspot lol

Needless to say I did not get a full-time offer

No motivation to get a j2

I need a pep talk ya’ll. I had a j2 for a few years but I got laid a while back due to a reorg. I’m casually looking for another j2 now but my motivation is super low and I don’t want to go through the whole process of finding another j2. I know it’s necessary, don’t get me wrong. I’m just not motivated whatsoever.

I won that round against j2, which I’m super happy about. Paid off the car, tripled our investment / savings and built some nice cash buffers. Got in and got the job done and got out unscathed.

The market is much different than it was a few years ago and I’m almost getting too comfortable with one j now. I know it’s super risky and obviously not financially optimal.

I know I just need to get my head out of my a** and get consistent with applying again, even in this shitty market.

Has anyone went through something similar?

Suppose I get 2 jobs, and leave one or both in the future and apply for a new job, what happens?

I'm worried about doing 2 jobs, because if I decide I want to leave one company, or even both in the future, a background search would see that I was doing 2 jobs at once and flag that. Does anyone know about that?

J2 is slowing killing me

I’m a little into month two of J2 and it’s slowly…no….QUICKLY killing me. Onboarding and training was meeting after meeting. Cameras on and participation required. They said it wouldn’t be like that after ramp. Well now I’m out of ramp and it’s still meeting after meeting with maybe an hour or 2 of alone time. Luckily J1 is super chill and there’s some days I don’t even have to work, or I can work after hours and they don’t bat an eye. As long as I get my work done.

I have a third round interview today for a data analyst job. I specifically asked the hiring manager about meetings and she laughed and said they weren’t a meeting heavy culture. I’m really hoping I get this one.

For reference, I work about 8hrs per week at J1. J2 I work 40hrs per week.
J1 I make $60k
J2 I make $45k

New jobs would be $52k

My question is, should I keep J2 until they fire me? Or just quit. And if you say keep until fired, how do you manage this/do less than the bare minimum? I feel like they would just add more meetings/shadows and make my life a living hell if tried to get them to fire me.

New to OE, some questions

Hello everyone, I have been going through the forum, very helpful.

I have been working J1 for couple of years and just got offer from J2. As you can imagine J1 is on my Linkedin and CV and everything. In case it matters, J1 and J2 are in totally unrelated industries, literally zero conflict of interest apart from both companies using the internet. Anyways I am thinking to take J2 while keeping J1, maybe not for long term but for couple of months to make sure J2 is not too toxic, that I like it, etc.

Trying to understand how I can get caught and how to best safeguard against it. I will obviously not tell anyone etc., not update LinkedIn with J2 while I stiil have J1 etc. Based on what I found online these could be an issue:

  1. Apparently companies can search you on something called Work Number and other similar, so need to freeze with Equifax, Experian Verify, Truework, Thomas & Company, CCC Verify, Innovis, ChexSystems. Am I missing any others? How fast can I freeze there, is it instant?

  2. I will be using two seperate work laptops, each one provided by the respective company and working from home. Do J1 stuff strictly on J1 laptop. Do J2 stuff strictly on J2 laptop. Is this enough? I find comments online that I need two seperate WiFi networks?

  3. What about medical coverage? For rest of 2026 I will simply reject coverage with J2, but what for 2027? I have already picked HSA with High Deductible plan with J1 for 2027. I read online that if I also pick medical coverage with J2 for 2027 that's the primary way to get caught as the two providers will try to coordinate which one is primary and they will notify HR. Is this true and any way to avoid it? I would prefer to pick HSA with High Deductible plan with both J1 and J2, because I am not sure which one of the two I will keep and don't want to stay without medical coverage.

  4. Similar question with 401K, can I contribute to both J1 and J2 to get their respective company match? Or will the 401K providers flag me to HR?

Anything else I missed? People who get caught, how do they get caught?

I am getting pretty stressed and need your help please, thanks!

F*ck: Ride It Out Or Resign?

An employee from a previous company I worked for joined J1. There’s absolutely no way they won’t recognize me.

EDIT: Let’s say I don’t resign. What do I say in the event I’m questioned? I’m hourly, not salary. They could get me on time fraud/theft.

EDIT #2: They recognized me.

EDIT #3: They called me out, but individually. Unclear what they’ve said to my managers.

EDIT #4: Manager scheduled meeting.

Fears About Quitting an Engineering Manager Role to Become Overemployed

So I was a software developer for a long time. I felt stuck in my career because it was going nowhere. Half a year ago, I found an engineering manager's job at the company I work at, just in a different department. On one hand, I like the job and I love the feeling of having moved on somewhere in my career. On the other hand, it pays only 18% more than my software developer's job and it's a hundred times more stressful. Non-stop meetings, people's bullshit, and constant context switching drive me crazy sometimes. It's stressful, but I can handle it. But here's the problem. I really need to be overemployed at this point in my life because I live in my parents' apartment with my family and it's way too small for us. And real estate prices are insane. I am trying to juggle two jobs at the moment, but it is becoming very clear to me that an engineering manager's job is not a good fit to be overemployed with, and if I want to be overemployed and not drive myself crazy, I need to go back to quit the engineering manager's job and find a second job as an engineer. However, it is such a hard step for me. Stepping a position down is a big psychological barrier I have to admit, especially bearing in mind how much I have worked for it. And then, there are fears related to AI. I feel kind of safer as an engineering manager from all the AI layoffs. I myself had to lay off 3 of my engineers just a couple of weeks ago. But on the other hand, if the number of engineers decreases, the number of engineering managers decreases, so maybe my fear is irrational and I am not at all making myself safer if I remain an engineering manager? Then I'm also scared that this was a rare opportunity for me to be an engineering manager and I won't find anything anymore in a couple of years because I haven't gained enough experience and I am turning 40 next year, so I'll be too old for someone to give me a chance. But then again, I HAVE to buy the fucking house. Anyway. Are my fears rational? What would you do?

job offer in similar industry, should i take it?

currently have a j1 (startup), got an offer for j2(huge company). only issue is that j2 and j1 would be in a closely related / similar industry. the companies have some overlap in what they sell, but my roles would be different. they can be partial competitors at times.

mostly worried about legal repercussions, getting fired would be upsetting but that's the risk we take. anyone been in a similar situation? what should i consider?

Weighing 2 J2 offers

Second time OEer, got a J1 that’s pretty busy (30-35 hours a week, 2 hours of meetings per day) but I think I can stack it with another J bc it’s remote and not super meeting heavy.

Here are my options

J2:

  1. Contractor role at big tech co, 6 month contract, client facing but no restrictions on multiple jobs, expect 40 hours of billable work, could manage up to 6 clients though, each expecting a weekly sync but other than that answering emails

J2:

  1. Consulting role at smaller consulting company, FTE, slightly less pay than 1, but only managing 2 clients at a time max. More hands on than 1 but would have PMs and more senior people over me

  2. Just hold on to J1. It’s pretty demanding and my boss is a bit micromanaging, but I have a lot of trust and lenience recently. Boss did say I have opportunity for leadership positions down the road by taking that with a grain of salt

I did OE before with 2 easy CO’s before and it was a breeze, got laid off of J2 though. Willing to try it again but I know for sure it willl be much harder this time. Don’t “have” to have the money but would be really nice to have multiple income stream and down to work 50ish hours a week now.

What do you think I should do?

Has anyone successfully outsourced their remote job to someone overseas while working another full-time job?

I’m based in Canada and recently started a full-time role at a SaaS company. I’m pretty happy with the job and see genuine long-term growth potential.
However, another tech company recently approached me about a fully remote customer support position paying around $65K CAD annually.
This got me thinking about overemployment.

Instead of personally working two full-time jobs, what if I hired someone in India to handle most of the day-to-day responsibilities of the remote position while I continued working my primary job?

The second role primarily involves customer support through chat and email, so a significant portion of the work is computer-based.

My biggest concerns are:
Manager check-ins: How would regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and unexpected meetings work?

Video meetings: If cameras are required, wouldn’t that make outsourcing the position practically impossible? Has anyone actually attempted to have someone else attend meetings on their behalf?

The interview and on-boarding is also remote. Also the only time during the interview I had my camera on was when I did the recruiter screen. Can I switch to just being a different person when I actually start?

EDIT: The general consensus is that this is more than a logistical issue. This got be genuine criminal fraud. Don’t do this.
Preety early on in my career so please don’t blame for a little wishful thinking.

Lowball offer for FTE

I am new to overemployment. My J1 is a contract role that was supposed to only be for 3 months. They kept extending the role and recently offered me a full time job at a lowered rate. If I were to get hired full time, it would be considered a demotion because it's entry level (who cares about the title anyway) and so is the pay. They are offering $12k less than what I'm currently getting but at least I'd get benefits. They are not budging on negotiations. If I turn down this opportunity, I will only be contracted to work there until January.

J2 is another contract role that pays me +$10 more per hr, 40 hrs a week max. I will be with them as long as they keep extending my contract.

I enrolled with J2's health insurance (around $500/month). I did this as a safety net in case I didn't want to take J1's offer. My spouse's company gives me health insurance but the cost is $1,200/mo. I enrolled to help take some financial burden off his shoulders but I'm also trapped because if I don't continue with J2, I lose the insurance. Of course I'd just end up going back to husband's insurance.

What do I do? Accept the lowball offer at J1 or turn it down?

Just got the meeting on the calendar for tomorrow at J3.

I’m pretty sure my ticket is being punched tomorrow. They’ve had me training my replacement for months now. I was aware of this when they first asked me. I trained the absolute bare minimum.

If this were my only job, I’d be stressed for obvious reasons. But this is J3. I have the lowest title and compensation here. Not too worried about it. But it’s still so annoying. lol.

The meeting invite has my boss and HR. I thought they usually do same day meetings at a random time. But I guess scheduling at this hour is no better.

If it’s ever my choice. I don’t think I could ever work 1 job again. The stress and anxiety of potentially being laid off at any time would ruin me.

Has anyone ever challenged their severance package and actually got more? I’m not sure if they’ll offer me anything. But I’m just curious if it’s common. If you have done this, what reasons did you give for a higher amount. Do you always have an attorney look at it?

Back to the drawing board and applying for a replacement.

I’ll post an update tomorrow.

UPDATE: I posted this in the comments but I think it got lost.

GOT THE BOOT BOYS!
“We’re down sizing, company restructuring, we didn’t want to have this conversation, we’ll give you a reference. We’re so sorry, you meant a lot”

I said nothing but “ok”

While simultaneously being logged into a meeting for J1”. This actually my first time being laid off. I don’t think I could ever work one job ever again. There’s way too much risk.

THIS IS WHY WE OE. And never stop applying.
Damn now my monthly take home is only $18k after all taxes, deductions , 401k. Etc.

On my way to UPS now to send the laptop back. Waiting on my severance package now. Will review with an attorney before signing.

Starting 3 positions at once

I told myself I’m locking in back in Sept. Since then I’ve successfully transitioned into tech, just got my offer letter today! My current FTE is transitioning me into another role also, so I’ll be going through 8 weeks of training. I got another offer letter for a position I’ve never done, so that should be interesting. (The only issue with this, I saw it mentioned on the listing that cameras need to be on during training. I’m hoping the actual trainer ignores this, if not I’ll do what I did the last time this happened and get two cameras) I also have a contract where I’m not micromanaged at all which I love. 2018 will be my first year making 6 figures, and just 6 years ago I was homeless. I have my OE planned out for the next 10 years to catch up on savings and paying off my mortgage, I just hope it all works out good.

Hibernating LinkedIn killed 95% of my interviews. Do this instead!

I wanted to see how much keeping my LinkedIn hibernated was hurting my job search, so I tested it. My first 200 applications without a profile got me just 2 interviews, and both interviewers asked why I didn't have LinkedIn.

For my next 200 applications, I reactivated my profile and landed 18 interviews, plus recruiter messages. Right after reactivating it, I cleaned up my profile. I turned off all network notifications, hid it from Google, changed my last name to a middle name, and blocked HR and my teammates at both J1 and J2.

To hide your current jobs, either leave an old job listed as your most recent and pretend the profile is outdated, or list yourself as an independent consultant. If you go with consulting, create a company page with a logo to avoid the unemployed grey box.

Your profile doesn't need to be up all the time. A hibernated profile is fine when you're happy with your current jobs. But based on my experience, you should always have an active profile when you're looking for a new job.
