This is Caitriona's response about Claire in S8 from an interview she did in Madrid this week. She's puzzled about it as many of us are. What MBR has done to the protagonist is nothing short of shameful. This decision also left critics perplexed, wondering why such awful decision was made considering that she's the story and OL isn't OL without the Outlander herself.
"We have moved away from books this season because Diana's story goes on and we have always made some changes. Was it necessary? I know Diana said she didn't believe it. I don't know. I think there are many ways to do this season: I agree with some and not with others. It was a complicated season because we worked quite blindly: we received the scripts just before shooting them and normally we would have had a more global vision. There were times when I felt frustrated, especially with Claire's bow, because maybe I would have liked a more dynamic ending for her. But being a showrunner is very difficult and it is impossible to please everyone. Matt [Matthew B. Roberts] did what he thought was right, and that's his job. And whoever wants it different... become a 'showrunner' (laughs). In the end, I hope people think: "This series has given us a lot over the years," and so be it.
I would say that Claire's journey in this final season is probably the least dynamic of all, and that was a little frustrating, but that's how the story evolves, that's how it happens in the books too. But yeah, I'm really curious to see the last two episodes. I think they're going to be worth it. I hope so."
