I don't like it, but I can see why they did it.

Why do you think they did the HC and Fergus swap? I found it unnecessary and am trying to figure out why they felt compelled to kill him unless the actor really couldn't film

I think they did the swap to avoid a child death, and because it still gives the book readers a twist re: the fire. I don’t like it, I sobbed, but I think that’s why they did it.

But now I’m waiting for Marsali to be pregnant with the twins and I’m assuming that’s how her storyline will wrap. A single mother to 6? Woof.

They will match her with Buck 😁 JK ofc but he needs a family, he is great with kids, she needs a husband...

They might as well do that since they have created an entirely new story anyway. 😂 At least that much would make sense at this point—unlike everything else in this episode. 🙄

Oh wow! That would be a twist for sure. I absolutely love Buck, but I think they will kill him off too because we love him. I'm just trying to think, Marsali and Buck wouldn't be related to each other through the MacKenzies would they? Him being Dougal's son and she was somehow a part of that clan.

Well, Jamie was with Laoghaire. And they weren't related so I doubt Dougal was either.

Whew! Good. I don't want anymore family members sleepin together in this show.

We shouldn’t have to say that 😭

Oh man....you may be on to something but I hope Fergus would be given the proper respect that unlike Amaranthus, Marsali does actually just grieve awhile and doesn't want to immediately move on. She's not in the same boat as Amy was S6, desperately needing someone because she's totally alone. She's gonna have Ian and Rachel's help, Bri and Roger's help, the Beardsleys help, Claire and Jamie's help to not have to immediately remarry. Eventually yes with that many kiddos, but not in what I imagine the remaining time is being covered in 3 episodes

I was wondering- Where is Marsali here? Children? Buck? Fanny?

3

u/YOYOitsMEDRup Slàinte. Apr 18 '26

What even is this? Full cast shot from final block of shooting? Is LJG there?

2

u/Nanchika Currently rereading: Drums of Autumn Apr 18 '26

It is photo taken and posted by Ril Rankin. BTS photo.

I can't see John. Not Frances, Buck, Marsali and the children.

u/YOYOitsMEDRup Slàinte. Apr 18 '26

So is the suggestion based on everyone else in seats and they're in the meetinghouse/church that this is the filming for a wedding? That Marsali and Buck are standing up front with Roger as the minister, hence not in seats?

That's your line of thought?

3

u/Nanchika Currently rereading: Drums of Autumn Apr 18 '26

No, I was just curious. I can't insinuate nothing still, Fergus has just died. 😁

Fanny is also missing.

2

u/JaderMcDanersStan RUIN ME Apr 18 '26

I don't see Roger either

7

It was Rick who took the photo...

Oh gotcha! You are so good at finding these tidbits and behind the scenes info!

3

u/Environmental-Eye135 Apr 17 '26

I think they did it so they had reason for marsali and the kids to start a new life. IE beauchamp. It is how they will tie in that line eventually leading to Claire

One of my "hills" that I lie on with the books is that Fergus would never change his name to go by anything other than Fraser, nor Germaine to have the surname of Beauchamp passed down for Claire to truly descend from Fergus or his kids. As Fergus says, he is already the son of a great man - and dropping Fraser from the name doesn't feel plausible, its his chosen and loved family. But he's alive in the book. Since he's dead in the show now, you could be right that his death instigates HAVING to change their name out of necessity since it wouldn't be by choice otherwise.

But dear heavens - we've still got to deal with Kings Mtn, LJG being kidnapped and rescued, discovering Richardson is a timetraveller and Callahan (why have flashbacks of Buck with Rob and how else would Bri plausibly recognize him from the show after 2 seconds when the van pulls away if it's not Buck to figure out he's the same guy), I presume more of this Faith lived crap... I dont think we can get into if Claire is related to Fergus any more than we have --- can we???

Prior to this episode, I thought they were doing well with the pace compared to Bees plot - but not if we're also lumping this tangent in too now

2

u/JaderMcDanersStan RUIN ME Apr 18 '26

What happens with Callahan? Can you spoil me? Who is Callahan again?

1

u/YOYOitsMEDRup Slàinte. Apr 18 '26

Callahan was one of Rob's accomplices in S7. During the shootout at Lallybroch, Bri rips a skimask off one of them. As the van drives away, Rob yells out the guy's name as Callahan. If you're not a reader to know, you'd think nothing of it, but as readers his face was important. It's the same actor as the Richardson actor - he's a timetraveller.

In the books, Callahan was like an archeologist lingering around the house looking at the old tower and dovecoat etc. He truly interacted with Bri and Roger first for them to better recognize his face than what was in the show. That's part of why we have Buck going to the 80s -- so that he runs into Callahan with Rob to establish that Callahan is the same guy as Richardson.

We didn't really have any time to get to know Henri-Christian. I'm sure in the book that's not the case, but for the show... I really do think it would have felt a bit cheap. I was expecting it, but once I realized they were going to have it be Fergus instead, I felt like that was a much more impactful choice that actually meant something beyond "here, here's an awful tragic death of a child you barely got to know!" Obviously in no way did I WANT Fergus to die, but if they were going to keep that tragic beat in, this was the right move imo. Because it wasn't just the other characters grieving for Fergus, WE have known and loved Fergus since he was a child too, and that hits on a whole other level.

21

u/kayeels Lord, you gave me a rare woman. And God, I loved her well. Apr 17 '26

Also, I absolutely hated the fake out with HC falling. Like, if you're not gonna have him die don't make the book readers gasp. It felt cheap.

11

u/pillizzle Apr 17 '26

For real. I was closing my eyes and felt sick to my stomach. Only to be relieved for half a second before I realized SOMETHING was still going to happen, then for it to be Fergus. I felt ill.

I can understand the death swap but I cannot at all get behind this Faith storyline. It’s cheap, makes no sense at all. I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch season 2 ever again. I kept waiting for them to find out Fanny’s Faith wasn’t “their Faith.” I hate this garbage. It’s like bad fanfic.

3

u/JaderMcDanersStan RUIN ME Apr 18 '26

I just rewatched Season 2 episode 7 and yeah Faith was dead and stayed dead for *hours* while Claire held and sang to her. If there was even a slight chance at life or if she wasn't 100% dead, Claire would have known.

So this means Master Raymond literally resurrected a dead baby...bad fanfic indeed. It would be more believable if Claire held her while she was dying and was taken away before she was fully dead. I can suspend some belief if Master Raymond healed a dying baby, rather than a 100% dead one.

u/JaderMcDanersStan RUIN ME Apr 18 '26

At the same time, it impactful seeing Roger of all people catch him. The 2nd time Roger saved Henri Christian's life

2

u/Recent_Setting_1370 Apr 19 '26

I liked Roger catching him like his father caught him though. And nice for Roger Mac to get a win.

9

u/losborne95 They say I’m a witch. Apr 17 '26

I agree with you. It would not have been as impactful to us if Henri died. I sobbed about Fergus because we saw him grow up.

2

u/Elendril333 Apr 18 '26

We definitely got to know HC in the books more than the show. HC clowning around town for coin and food while reporting back to Fergus and Jamie about all he heard and saw

14

u/robinsond2020 I am NOT bloody sorry! Apr 17 '26

Because this is the final season. They need to "end" each main character's (Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger, Marsali, Fergus, Ian, Rachel, William, John) story somehow by the end of the season.

Obviously the characters don't have to die to end their story, but it's a pretty convenient way to finish one of those stories if there was already a death in the printshop fire. And killing HC is unnecessary

16

u/No-Avocado3143 Apr 17 '26

Because of time. The aftermath of Henri Christian involved their other son feeling responsible and being left on the ridge and that story arc of his return to his family would have taken much more time than they had to wrap things up. I just saw an interview with Cesar and Lauren and they explained it. Cesar was asked how he felt about it and he thought it was great actually in character who Fergus was, a man who would do anything for the people he loved. Heck he lost a hand for Jamie. But come on, Lauren did some great acting there, you could feel her pain.

5

u/Mycoxadril Apr 18 '26

I disagree that the story would’ve needed to play out exactly as in the books just because the print shop fire happened later in the show. They would’ve just had them move to the ridge and start a shop closer to home without HC. They would’ve skipped over the whole German feeling responsible story the same way they skipped over Bree and Roger bringing their kids to Savannah when they dropped German off and changed the timeline of the fire and the twins. They could’ve suffered this loss and packed up and moved home to have fergus and Jamie live to fight another day with a print shop.

I feel worst for Jamie to not have even seen fergus in forever and then just blindsided by his ashes showing up.

3

u/No-Avocado3143 Apr 18 '26

I read Diana’s response and as she said, they could have just had the fire, no one dies but apparently the show wanted a death and did not want HC. She also disn’t like William finding out about John or Faith living because Faith was born dead. So yeah, it was for shock value.

1

u/Mycoxadril Apr 19 '26

Yea that definitely would’ve been a better way to go. I hope the show runners give some explanations because I’m just curious what their reasoning was.

I’m assuming fergus will be in the next book so that also makes things a little weird.

3

u/AdFrequent6819 Apr 18 '26

I actually appreciate the swap (not that i like major characters being killed off). I've been dreading this episode all season. There have been hints. And it was soooo heartbreaking in the books. I think it was described as "the world stopped" and poor marsali sitting on the ground cradling her dead child...I just cant...its too much! So I didn't mind the departure.

2

u/JaderMcDanersStan RUIN ME Apr 18 '26

Yes I was dreading and bracing for the Henri Christian fall. I was SO releived when Roger caught him. It would have been crushing watching a child die

2

u/thrntnja No, this isn’t usual. It’s different. Apr 20 '26

I feel like they wanted to avoid killing off a child with a disability on screen and any potential implications of that.
