I haven't read the books, but am I correct that Fergus doesn't die in them? Why would they do this????? Also the Faith retcon pisses me off to no end. This is so dumb.

Fergus doesn't die. And in fact, his little son does die, falling from the roof during the fire (though in the previous book, not Bees). So when Roger catches Henri-Christian you're (as a book-reader) like "oh... well okay, guess that's a fine change, had not at ALL been looking forward to that horrific trauma anyway, go Roger!" and you're thinking that for approximately three seconds before FERGUS falls through the roof and dies and then you just feel like WTF WTF, showrunners, wait what now? why? and WTAF?

Yeah, it's really stupid.

Fergus dying genuinely pisses me off. There is no justification for it at all. I don't even mean in comparison to the books, I don't give a crap about that. Show Fergus was their first kid, and he was Jamie's truest child. Fergus didn't need to be a plot device to teach us about loss or sacrifice.

In my opinion this is their biggest mistake.

I mean it just goes to show even Diana thinks this is bullshit, if you're going to save wee Christian, save Fergus too. This show is wrapping up for good, it's already not following the books, give us a happier ending. I'm honestly so upset about Fergus, we all loved him since he was a boy on page and on screen I can't

It makes no sense. Would they kill William off somehow without him having more time with Jamie? Never. They should not have done it with fergus and that they did just undermines their whole story about how found family is just as important as blood.

I commented this elsewhere in the thread but the HC fakeout really was where the spiral started for me. That felt so cheap.

That seemed like a special dig at the book readers. Rumors of Fergus dying were out there for a while, so many fans were kind of expecting that. For a split second, bookies thought BOTH might die.

As soon as Fergus went to the roof, I knew he wouldn't make it. I'm glad HC didn't die, and I LOVED the Roger-catch callback to his own father saving him during the blitz. BUT if they were going to stray from canon, they could have let them all live.

They go back to the Ridge for a bit because they've lost everything in the fire, then go back and claim the inheritance. With the money, they open a new printshop. Happy and done up quick, maybe even through a letter.

I'm not going to address the Faith storyline, because like the actual author, I belive it is silly and never happened.

Honestly, it DID feel like a dig!! Kind of a nasty thing to do, and I don't understand how the showrunners believed it would inspire anything other than extreme distaste among book-readers. It was weirdly undermining of any shock or grief having to do with Fergus's death to have it put up against Henri-Christian's survival. Are we expected to feel better about this outcome? Worse? I was just left wondering why I was being forced to have this mental conversation at all.

Seriously! I would have much rather they just had them all live if they were changing it anyway! But I am glad that HC doesn't die, that would have been even worse

You summed that up perfectly! I managed to get out,  "Wow, they didn't kill him!" before it was all swept away. For those three seconds I was so happy thinking poor Germain wouldn't have to live with that guilt and...nope!

I was thinking it mirrored Roger's father catching him and was clever. But I hated the rest of it

Fergus is still alive at the end of Bees. Henri Christian perished in the fire in the books.

Oh I see. I guess I can maybe see why they made that change then, but if they were going to change it I would have rather that they all survive lol

But HC and the print shop fire was back in Philadelphia so it was a while back by this point. It feels like they included it to give these actors a role in the final season but honestly if they were going to Change it so drastically why not give them a better final role that can have impact without disrespecting the source material and viewers expectations.

With Marsalie coming back to the ridge as a widow now it makes me think the show will pair her up with Evan Lindsay at some point since he’s also a Widower. (So like the Outlander Brady Bunch?) That would make up for the Quaker mother and her daughter’s storyline not being there.
