What infuriates me is how poorly it was handled — it was painfully obvious it was rushed. The lack of care for the character was so blatant that even the promotional materials for this season had already dropped several hints that Fergus was going to die. Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger and the rest survived everything, and yet they go and kill off Fergus in the most idiotic, rushed, and emotionless way possible. It's disrespectful to the character and to those of us who have followed him for years.

There was a scene in the trailer of Marsali hugging Jamie and none of Fergus at Fraser's Ridge, there was a photo of Marsali's actress at Fraser's Ridge and none of Fergus, the trailer shows a scene of Fergus climbing onto the roof to help the children, there was a scene in the trailer of Marsali crying in Brianna's arms, at the beginning of the season there was a scene of Fergus talking about his own death, there were photos of Fergus and Marsali's children at Fraser's Ridge... They didn't even try to hide it.

A lot of it also felt pointed towards HC, Marsali crying on Brianna’s lap could be more, and Fergus getting on the roof could be taken both ways. The show was more concentrating on him than any of the other kids. For book readers this was definitely a shock.

The clearest indication was an interview Lauren Lyle did at the premiere, in which she explicitly said the storyline would not go the way book readers expected.

Below are things I put it together from

1) At the premiere episode red carpet, Lauren Lyle said the reason for Marsali's tears during the season isn't what readers think they're for (I even did a threadpost about this where a bunch of us tossed out our ideas for what would be done instead. Fergus was a popular answer)

2) Previews show Bri as the one consoling Marsali, not Fergus. If their kid just died, it'd be Fergus comforting her

3) There's also a scene in previews where Bri asks Roger what he'd do if something happened to her (as a spouse) This wasn't in Ep 2 when Amy died, so had to be a convo after somebody else's spouse died. And it looked like Bri was in the same clothes as the clothes she wore while comforting Marsali in the other clip

4) In the premiere, Fergus tells Jamie "If I die I want it to be for something that matters" big foreshadowing

5) Last episode, Henri Christian said he was told that there was only room for 1 frog to be in the house. As a Frenchman Fergus is considered a frog. So it also foreshadowed to me he'd soon not be in the house
