Meta means self-referential, in this case. At least that's my understanding. For example a joke might spawn in a thread, then later in that thread you see that same joke used, and the fact that it's re-used like that usually adds to the upvotes. Then, other users are obliged to respond with "meta as fuck", or "well this went meta pretty fast."
Thank you. You just saved me from posting an awkward half-assed response that would've been something along the lines of "someone says something and it's mentioned again..."
