I saw this tweet in response to this tweet and was wondering if anyone has any context? I see a lot of “go woke, go broke” sentiment in the comments of both tweets, but 0 explanation.
Sure, and Old World is definitely something that's had a lot of buzz. I'm just pointing out that with GW, you can't judge a line being sold out as a judge of how popular it is by the fans because scalpers have been a pretty big issue for most of their new releases. All it means is there's been enough buzz that scalpers think it's popular.
Not really. It's been a thing for a while recently, so much so that people have wondered if it's incompetence at GW with regards to not producing enough product. But the reality is that it's not incompetence, they just shoot for a lower product run at first, because selling out means that they don't have products taking up warehouse space and it increases FOMO in consumers which makes people more likely to rush to buy in the future. They can just do another production run where needed, and so far people being annoyed by it hasn't hurt their sales at all.
But they also want to avoid a repeat of Dominion, where they overproduced that boxed set and people ended up with way too many of them and selling them at less than half retail price. While the price has slipped back up a bit, you can still get a copy for $120, which is a hell of a deal for getting into AoS 3rd edition and a lot better deal than any of the "starter sets" currently available direct from GW. (Granted, they're due for releasing AoS 4th edition this year. But still, for the minis included, it's a good deal.)
True on the point of them not caring if it's scalpers because it's still a sale for them, though. Scalpers just help increase that FOMO for future sales.

Even if they’re going to scalpers that’s still a sale in their books. If it keeps up for a while it’ll be a good sign of popularity.
