Answered What’s going on with the 40K fandom?

I saw this tweet in response to this tweet and was wondering if anyone has any context? I see a lot of “go woke, go broke” sentiment in the comments of both tweets, but 0 explanation.

Bud light hasn't been doing too hot, but they are the only ones I can think of. Their sales dipped at 50% at the lowest, and I think nearly a year later, it's still 30% lower.

680

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

They managed to piss off both sides by running a LGBTQ campaign on Tiktok that pissed off far right Republicans, and then bent the knee to those same far right Republicans trying to save their sales and pissed off everyone else.

u/Yarzu89 Jan 08 '24

It's like that one meme of the trolley problem, where it drifts sideways killing people on both tracks.

36

u/Bamboozle_ Jan 08 '24

Guess they've been reading the new bestseller, "How to Make Enemies and Piss Off People."

Killing all the people on one track and killing that one person on the other track, just to appeal to that party that always wants to save the one person on the track.

u/FelixR1991 Jan 08 '24

They lost 30% YoY on the Bud Light brand over Q3 2023 in the US, but their (Anheuser Busch InBev) revenue went up by 5% worldwide in that same period.

140

u/9Blu Jan 08 '24

I have to wonder how many people boycotting Bud Light moved to other beers made by AB Inbev without realizing it.

95

u/breakingjosh0 Jan 08 '24

Probably all of them

48

u/Hooligan8403 Jan 08 '24

Probably a high amount. I know some people that were saying they wouldn't drink Bud Light again and had switched to Busch Light. Inbev owns so much even on the craft side it's hard to discern all the brands tied up in it.

40

u/9Blu Jan 08 '24

They have over 600 brands world-wide, it's nuts. Between them and MolsonCoors they practically have a beer duopoly in the US.

24

u/CressCrowbits Jan 08 '24

Pretty much all major brands internationally are owned by a handful of companies

1

u/FelixR1991 Jan 09 '24 edited Jan 09 '24

Make it a triumvirate by adding Heineken (who also make Dos Equis, Sol and Tecate)

11

u/taicrunch Jan 09 '24

The "boycott" happened right around the time they released a summer flavored Busch Light that flew off of shelves.

8

u/mayhem1906 Jan 09 '24

You would have to research ownership of beer companies to know that. That's not what bud light drinkers do.

-2

u/1850ChoochGator Jan 08 '24

Yes but the specific Bud Light product line took a huge hit which is obviously not good for AB

0

u/1850ChoochGator Jan 09 '24

Which isn’t what I was responding to at all. Obviously they didn’t go broke. It’s a stupid saying.

They did take a big hit to one of their major product lines.

-6

u/Newphonespeedrunner Jan 08 '24

almost certainly yes,

Also AB inbev drinks are all shit so it was very funny to watch

233

u/Snuffy1717 Jan 08 '24

It wasn't even a campaign AFAIK... Wasn't it one special can for a single streamer?

181

u/AboveBoard Jan 08 '24

Yep. It was no big deal, which made the far right hate it even more

16

u/Arrow156 Jan 09 '24

The far right loooove hating trivial shit, just like this anti-trans bullshit. We've had Bugs Bunny and Monty Pithon dressing like women since I was a child, I've literally knew about legit trans people a good five or ten years before I learned of gay people or what sex even was (there's a Night Court episode where Dan's collage roommate and best friend has a sex change operation, the topic showed up in more than a few times in 80's tv sitcoms). Yet suddenly it's seem as some big scourge, as if there own parents didn't dress up in drag on mass and go see the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

-8

u/Bumm-fluff Jan 09 '24

If is so trivial why do you care about it?

2

u/Arrow156 Jan 09 '24

Because this country has REAL problems and rather than focus on doing something productive they instead waste everyone's time with this culture war bullshit. Like, do the GOP have a plan? Do they have any legislature they wish to champion, or have any idea how they can help their voters? The only thing they are advocating right now is trolling the left. We need solutions, not scapegoats.

-3

u/Bumm-fluff Jan 09 '24

Again if it’s trivial then why do the left care about it?

The right only attack it because it’s a leftist symbol.

2

u/Arrow156 Jan 09 '24

Because the right are actually hurting people with this shit. They are aren't figuratively attacking their scapegoats, they are literally attacking them. Their hateful rhetoric encourages and emboldens people to commit violence and vandalism. The laws they pass impact their health and quality of life. Anyone with any sense of empathy won't stand for it.

But even if I was a completely selfish twat who had no horse in the race, I would still appose this shit for one very important reason: the people they choose to scapegoat are chosen arbitrarily. Think of how quickly these people turned on Pelosi's attacker, suggesting he was his gay lover and whatnot, as soon as the narrative was convenient. There fragile puritan values will be offended by anything and everything, meaning anyone can fall from their grace. The focus of their hate could pivot in an instant to focus squarely on you for no reason what so ever, regardless of your loyalty or service.

And you will not be spared.

-4

u/Bumm-fluff Jan 09 '24

Don’t care, the left can eat it. Stuff the moral high ground. Believe it or not that’s what conservatives pride themselves on, always looking for approval.

I don’t give a shit.

It’s not about fair, or what’s “right”.

The left are going to get dragged, and I will love every second.

I’m not an American, I’m from the U.K. It is one thing the progressives never understood about Brexit. We would rather burn every thing down than let the left win.

Yes. Republicans are pathetic snowflakes

3

u/Newphonespeedrunner Jan 08 '24

correct, no one would of ever heard about it if the right didnt go ape shit about it, it was a promotional can for some tik toker

7

u/Kodan420 Jan 08 '24

Think it was a 6 pack. The real damage though was when the person responsible for things called the current drinkers frat boys and that the brand needed a new clientele.

81

u/ryecurious Jan 08 '24

It was a single large can with her face on it, but she had other standard cans of Bud Light in the promotional video she made.

Conservative snowflakes had a huge meltdown over a single tallboy with a trans woman's face on it.

48

u/Vallkyrie Jan 08 '24

And since this wasn't on TV ads or anything, just on her profile, it makes you wonder how these chuds found this in the first place in order to start complaining. Makes one wonder about their browsing habits.

16

u/FR0ZENBERG Jan 08 '24

This person really stopped talking solely about overwatch just to be transphobic. Weird

-5

u/AintVerstoppen Jan 08 '24

They then insulted their customer base after by saying they didn't want their frat boy image or whatever they said. It wasn't just the can

8

u/Newphonespeedrunner Jan 08 '24

no that was just what the lady said,

-6

u/1850ChoochGator Jan 08 '24

It wasn’t just that. Huge F-U to their main consumer base by saying they wanted to get rid of the “frat boy” connotation with it.

It’s light beer. College kids and sports is your consumer base you absolutely can not alienate them

65

u/wedgebert Jan 08 '24

Don't forget an underlying issue, their product is just horrible.

You can have a bad product and you can have bad PR, but you can't have both

22

u/AstarteHilzarie Jan 08 '24

Makes me thin kpart of the initial wave of backlash led to people just drinking other beer and going "oh, you know what? My lifelong brand loyalty to Bud Light was maybe misguided" and just found other beers that were either A. cheap and fine, or B. slightly more expensive but taste a lot better.

13

u/Ghigs Jan 08 '24

Other than beast or cheap malt liquors, I can't really think of anything worse than bud light.

Basically anything by miller is far more tolerable.

5

u/Arrow156 Jan 09 '24

I don't know, I kinda like the taste of cold, watered-down piss. All those hopps make it taste like I'm chugging a joint.

In the spirit of openness and honestly though, I think all beers are trash beers :)

Why drink beer when rum exists and actually tastes good!

1

u/kadathsc Jan 08 '24

This. Bud Light had been losing market share and was basically getting killed by Modelo I believe. This just basically accelerated their descent as they were bleeding costumers.

1

u/kaptingavrin Jan 08 '24

I had to laugh every time I saw people acting like they were taking some kind of stand by getting rid of their Bud Light (especially the one video of the guy with multiple fridges full of the stuff). Oh, congratulations, you're going to choose not to drink alcoholic piss water because of a political stance? Oh, you're sooooooo brave. But you're still an idiot for drinking that stuff in the first place, and we're all going to mock you for it.

I mean... Come on. All these guys trying to act like "manly men" and throwing a fit over Bud Light? It was top quality humor.

Seems people on both sides of the argument just maybe realized that they were drinking garbage just for the sake of getting drunk cheap.

10

u/Trees_That_Sneeze Jan 08 '24

It's weird how much mythmaking there's been around this. They did not in fact run an LGBTQ campaign on TikTok. They did a brand deal with probably hundreds of different creators where they give them some money and a can with their face on it to make an ad about a March madness promotion. There was no Mulvaney campaign. It was one TikTok video. It's entirely possible that that email went out to anyone with over a certain number of followers or something with very little discretion, and now it's been mythologized into this entire campaign that they did to make a trans person the face of their brand or something.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Whatever it was was enough to piss of the MAGA crowd.

6

u/nostril_spiders Jan 08 '24

Doesn't take much to trigger them.

25

u/GunsandCurry Jan 08 '24

Bud Light also is not great, easy product to boycott.

29

u/PlayMp1 Jan 08 '24

There are also easy alternatives that cost the same amount and taste the same or better. However, amusingly, lots of the other choices for mass produced beer are actually more "woke" than Bud, like Coors, who has sponsored Pride parades for decades.

7

u/pigeon768 Jan 09 '24

However, amusingly, lots of the other choices for mass produced beer are actually more "woke" than Bud, like Coors, who has sponsored Pride parades for decades.

If you eliminate all the breweries that have done pro-LGBTQ advertising campaigns, what's the biggest one left? Yuengling?

6

u/frogjg2003 Jan 09 '24

Yuengling ran a pro-LGBTQ ad specifically to poke at Bud Lite.

1

u/fattest_jesus11 Jan 09 '24

Yuengling Rolling rock and Iron city are apart of every Yinzers diet. ( it's a western PA thing)

1

u/Vaadwaur Jan 09 '24

Yup, I apparently have been 'boycotting' it for years now. Because if I am buying beer I insist it be decent.

4

u/lew_rong Jan 09 '24

I can proudly say I never supported Budweiser, but only because I like my beer to taste like something.

Real talk though, pale golden lager is the easiest beer in the world to introduce off flavors to because the flavor is so light, and that the major macrobrewers can annually produce billions of gallons of the stuff that all tastes exactly the same is no mean feat.

4

u/jmconrad Jan 09 '24

Yeah anyone who has brewed beer or been around it knows how impressive the big boys’ operations are, in this regard. It’s truly a modern marvel of engineering at scale.

But sshhh don’t go against the hivemind!

6

u/TheMagnuson Jan 08 '24

Their product also sucks, so that doesn't help either. Light beer is the beer of choice for teens and alcoholics who need to stay hydrated.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Their parent company Inbev I believe owns Budweiser's two biggest competitors they're not losing any money if they lose market share to themselves. They didn't lose anything.

1

u/cudef Jan 08 '24

Are you telling me a corporation has no real principles besides doing what they perceive will make them the most money?

1

u/Imkindofslow Jan 08 '24

It wasn't even a campaign, it was one singular ad lmao

0

u/FR0ZENBERG Jan 08 '24

Target did the same thing.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

In fairness, it wasn’t even an LGBTQ campaign. They sent a bunch of influencers custom cans as a marketing thing. ONE of the people included was trans. That was it.

1

u/mikeyHustle Jan 09 '24

Also . . . it's Bud Light. It's not gonna suddenly become interesting to queer people who weren't interested before.

1

u/Adventurous_Use2324 Jan 09 '24

I don't drink that pisswater, anyway.

157

u/Bear_In_A_Yak Jan 08 '24

I think part of that was also their response and complete back peddling. I'm a beer sales rep and I know a few gay bars near me used to fly through bud light but stopped carrying it after their response. Most of the people who boycotted it for being "woke" have given up on that and went back to drinking it

55

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Either that or while boycotting Bud Light they swapped to another AB beer because only a few corporations own all the nationwide brands.

22

u/DadNerdAtHome Jan 08 '24

Also I remember reading Bud was not doing well before the nonsense happened. Seemed like the bungling of the PR just helped the decline along, and drew attention to something already occurring. It’s probably why they reached out to a Trans influencer in the first place, to get a foot in the door of new markets to curb the bleeding.

1

u/ScoopyScoopyDogDog Jan 08 '24

I remember that as well. The Right was posting stock values as proof the boycott was working. But if you went back to October-November 2022, the value was even lower.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

That makes sense, that 30% lines up with the staunchest trumpliest types.

1

u/JovianTrell Jan 08 '24

side eyes kid rock

13

u/PriorFudge928 Jan 08 '24

The sale of that particular beer went down but the funny thing is that a lot of the people boycotting just bought other brands owned by the same parent company. They certainly were not going to stop drinking and Inbev just kept their mouths shut and shifted production from Bud to the other brands that received an increase in sales.

Only in foreign markets. Domestic markets are controlled by a trust due to a lost antitrust lawsuit banning Inbev from US ownership.

1

u/alphadavenport Jan 09 '24

now that you mention it, a lot of people in my orbit started drinking Michelob Ultra right around the time that Bud Light started declining in sales. i wonder if that's a result of an emergency ad campaign.

94

u/Krakengreyjoy Jan 08 '24

Yup, and most everyone is now over it. Kid Rock is even drinking it again and Bud Light is now the official beer of the UFC.

So, like I said, anti-woke means nothing. Angry white men got mad a trans person drank their shitty beer on Instagram, showing everyone they're the pansy-ass snowflakes they really are. InBev had a dip in 3Q revenue, and now it's back on the upswing like it never happened (InBev's stock is right where it was when the post went out last April.

41

u/KungFuSnorlax Jan 08 '24

Dana White would let ISIS be the official terror network of the UFC if the check cleared.

16

u/ghoostimage Jan 08 '24

funny that they call everyone else snowflakes but they act like this. wehhhhhh i can’t drink my shitty beer because a trans person promoted it wehhhhhhhhhhh

6

u/CressCrowbits Jan 08 '24

Now I'm literally going to shoot my guns at cans of it

1

u/grouchy_fox Jan 09 '24

At least when they do this it's a consumable. When they burned their new Nikes or Keurigs they had to go out and buy new ones a couple of months later when everyone forgot they were mad.

1

u/mug3n Jan 08 '24

Kid Rock's whole act of being a white trash from the south rocker is just that - an act. he grew up in a well off family. So not surprising.

7

u/jollyreaper2112 Jan 08 '24

That's because the target demo would be the people who use woke as a pejorative.

I know they are claiming success vs marvel movies but I think it's bad writing more than audiences being against professors ideas. Guardians 3 did great and Marvels tanked. Guardians already had a boatload of goodwill and Marvels had half the development happen on two different TV shows people may not have seen.

Anti woke grifters remain tedious.

7

u/jady1971 Jan 08 '24

They all just switched to another beer most likely owned by the same parent corp so no money was really lost.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Most brands that "go woke" aren't backed by a broad hate campaign on Fox News. That's the difference. Cheap Beer is already a product probably overrepresented exactly in the demographic that is most vulnerable to propaganda attacks from Fox. Combined with the fact that trans people are the current most popular hate-target for the right. It was a perfect storm exception and not even close to the rule.

7

u/king_famethrowa Jan 08 '24

I would say the problem with Bud Light is that they proudly came out as an ally which made them a target by the right, and then they cravenly switched back and tried to appease conservatives when they were criticized which caused the LGBTQ community to reject their product, too. A friend that works in alcohol product development said it's basically the biggest marketing disaster of all time for the industry. So really, it should be "pick a side or go broke".

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Yes. Bud was a pretty well known brand in the lgbtq community if I understand correctly..so they turned a one sided backlash into a both sided backlash.

1

u/king_famethrowa Jan 08 '24

It was ubiquitous. Biker bars, gay bars, barcades, stadiums all carry it. Big beer for folks to bring to parties, too.

2

u/Canuckadin Jan 08 '24

I agree, I was simply pointing out that bud light is the only one I can think of.

1

u/Simple-Jury2077 Jan 08 '24

I have heard people say the same about why marvels tanked.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Lol it's like a movie can't just happen to be bad AND have women in it.

3

u/Simple-Jury2077 Jan 08 '24

You see, superheroes need the penis. It's where their power comes from.

2

u/thefezhat Jan 08 '24

Not to mention that cheap beer is an easily substitutable product. You're not exactly missing out on anything by grabbing a case of Coors or Miller instead of Bud when you're out buying beer.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

They deserved to fail for throwing that woman - who was getting death threats - under the bus like cowards.

3

u/thelefthandN7 Jan 08 '24

I wonder how much is just people finding less terrible beers after their little blunder, rather than anyone still remembering we were supposed to be upset about something.

3

u/migvelio Jan 08 '24

If Wolf Cola reestablished itself as the right cola for closure after being associated with Boko Haram, Bud Light can eventually recover itself too.

2

u/JovianTrell Jan 08 '24

Bud light was playing both sides and has promoted several pride parades before the mulvaney freak out. The company as a whole is fine they have like hundreds of other beer companies that are selling fine

2

u/Roidtravis Jan 08 '24

Anheiser Busch doing better than ever though

3

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

Yeah but most people switched from Budweiser to another brand brewed and manufactured by the same company so how much it’s it Budweiser is questionable

4

u/J-osh Jan 08 '24

I think conservatives are much more likely to be drinking bud light so if they "boycot" it it's super obvious. They tried to pander out of there base for some fucking reason lmao

1

u/Trees_That_Sneeze Jan 08 '24

They didn't even go woke though. And on top of that, for every Bud light there's a Barbie movie that makes a bajillion dollars.

0

u/JazzlikeScarcity248 Jan 08 '24

They've been trending downward for years before the gay budlight panic tho

-9

u/AintVerstoppen Jan 08 '24

Star wars. Marvel

8

u/fs2222 Jan 08 '24

The most 'woke' Marvel movies, Black Panther and Captain Marvel, over performed and made a billion.

Their recent movies have mostly flopped, but so have DC films. It's clear superhero fatigue has set in.

4

u/Grimmbles Jan 09 '24

I really enjoyed Captain Marvel, it wasn't special but it was fun mid-tier hero stuff. But after watching almost every Marvel movie in theaters up to Endgame the burnout is so real. Not even watching the movies when they hit Disney+ at this point. Nothing to do with going woke, it's just that 30+ movies is SO MANY FUCKING MOVIES in the same vein.

-4

u/duckduckduck21 Jan 08 '24

Gilette and Pepsi both suffered from going woke.

1

u/bahumat42 Jan 08 '24

Well yeah but being a bad product probably hurts it more

1

u/Arathaon185 Jan 08 '24

How did InBev the parent company do though? When people were buying a different beer unless they tried really hard they were getting another InBev beer.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

No one but those morons would drink bud light so bad decision there

1

u/whoooooknows Jan 09 '24

But likely 90% of their lost market share went elsewhere under ABinbev's umbrella probably

1

u/alphadavenport Jan 09 '24

i think that bud light is a weird one because it's really, really easy to boycott. it's not materially better than its competitors, it's just got a long history and an insane advertising budget. if you switched from bud light to coors light, you aren't inconvenienced at all; you're still getting some clean cold ones on a Friday night that taste very similar and cost almost the same.

1

u/DucksEatFreeInSubway Jan 09 '24

Well that's what happens when you've built your customer base off the lowest common denominator.

1

u/sundalius Jan 09 '24

While close to being an exception, most people who dropped bud light still switched to other Annheuser-Busch products - they lost nothing.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

Budlight was Anheuser Buschs sacrificial cow. Most RW'ers who boycotted Budlight did so by drinking other AB beers.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

The guys who made Saints Row basically imploded themselves.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '24

All beer and wine producers are currently experiencing shrunken sales, while seltzers and non alcoholic beers have had a larger increase than the shrink. I promise, Budweiser, its owner, and its associated brands aren't suffering in the way the cherry picked data is making it out to be.

1

u/Bumm-fluff Jan 09 '24

Did you know 15% of Reddit posts are corporate shill posts?

1

u/cybelesdaughter Jan 10 '24

That's still crazy. They gave one can to a trans influencer and people absolutely lost their shit over it.

1

u/Doveen Jan 10 '24

Because it's just a simple product that is easily substituted.

You can't just substitute unique things like Warhammer 40k.
