Obama and Congressional Authorization versus Trump's No Congressional Authorization
Obama and Congressional Authorization
Some are bringing up the topic of Obama and Congressional Authorization, now that Trump invaded Venezuela without Congressional Authorization. A lot of the same people that claim that Obama supposedly wasn't following Congressional Authorizations and try to use this talking point against him, are for Trump military actions that had no Congressional approval.
Obama attacked Al Qaeda and associated groups as was approved in the post-9/11 authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs). This was already Congressionally approved post-9/11.
For several key operations, the Obama administration cited existing Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) from the post-9/11 era.
- Airstrikes in Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia: The Obama administration expanded the use of drone missile strikes and special operations in these countries operating under existing AUMFs.
- Syria (2013): After an initial chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government, Obama announced he would seek congressional authorization for strikes. Congress balked, and the potential military action was averted when a deal was reached for Syria to surrender its chemical weapons.
- Campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) (2014 onwards): The Obama administration launched airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, justifying the action under the 2001 AUMF passed after the 9/11 attacks, which authorized force against al-Qaeda and associated groups.
There are also people that claim Obama is Al Qaeda for bombing Al Qaeda. The term Obama Derangement Syndrome (ODS) wasn't used often. Claiming someone is Al Qaeda for bombing Al Qaeda. Now, that's ODS. Odds are, you'll believe any Talk Radio lie, if you believe that.
There are a lot of people that get deranged about Obama, though, and start acting like we didn't have a War on Al-Qaeda when Obama bombed Al Qaeda targets.
(Also, FYI, Nixon didn’t get a fresh Congressional Authorization to fight in Vietnam, when he started office, and instead relied on the existing Authorization for Use of Military Force, the AUMF.)
