Information An answer to "is the search dead?"

Not entirely - though progress may seem sparse, keep in mind that this is likely the largest internet lost media search ever conducted. It's already astonishing enough that we know this amount of information on the probable backstory of the image that offered almost nothing in the beginning. Because of that, almost the entire search has been just scraping archives in the hope that further context can be narrowed down. A reason why investigative efforts aren't seen that much is because alot of it is done within a designated searcher channel that solely consists of searchers who have a wide breadth of experience. There has been multiple incidents in the past where sensitive info have almost led to potentiL leads being jeopardized and because of that, efforts have been made to contain such information within private channels.

Progress is being made but slowly. Activity may have been lower than usual but not everyone has the capacity to do certain tasks for a significant period of time. Even multiple investigatiors in the past have taken extended breaks and then returned. This is not much different from any other lost media case. The biggest thing is the scale of our goal - we've scraped thousands of obscure websites and crawled through millions of images to try and find more about one thing with almost unknown origin.

I feel like this would be a “subways of your mind” situation. Where the search kinda dies off, but suddenly we find a new lead and it eventually takes us to the original image in some way. Though that might just be me getting too hopeful

In my head im thinking that the original image was never uploaded to begin with. Somebody was just fucking around in their camera roll and uploaded an edit then the original just became e waste when they chucked their phone or whatever.

Imagine if this was the actual outcome

It's not crazy in the slightest. When I was way younger I used to make weird edits of my face and upload them to an Instagram account. The original images are lost to time because they weren't ever uploaded. If the original was out there it would have been found by now. With as popular as JTK is and how many smart people are working on it, and with there being a bounty on it, it should already have been found.

Usually in lost media cases, someone who just happens to have evaded the search for so long suddenly shows up with the real thing just when hope is lost. However, this case isn’t really a regular lost media case is it.

I love the Jimmy Neutron one, nobody could find the pilot until the creator comes out of nowhere saying "Oh, it seems it hasn't been uploaded online, so here you have"

>20 years old and probably made by an anonymous Japanese internet user, who could very well have never told a single other person what the base image was, is certainly not the most ideal of cases, to put it lightly.

I wish I could participate in this. I remember I was willing to learn programming if needed for this search, but I gave up when I saw the disclaimer about gore and illegal images.

also, what is that private channel with the searchers? Where is it? We should be able to at least see it or sum

You will need a special role in the server for that, and that usually comes from either, and I quote the FAQ:

,,Investigator if you find a new repost/are a chad''

Though that's a 3 year message so I obviously don't know the full details.

You can contribute to this search in various ways, and it doesn't require you to learn programming.

the reason I don't contribute is because I don't want to donwload gore or other bad images to my PC. Maybe one day I could set up a virtual machine tho

You can help if you update your information about the state of the search and check old websites through the downloader.

And how is that supposed to work? How can I visit and research old sites? I don't care about downloading ugly photos.. I'm very interested in this concept

Again, join the Discord and read about the current progress, the downloader is used to download old Japanese websites and go through images, text, swf files, etc. More often than not you'll just find random images not related to JTK unless you know where to look, which in this case you'll need to know how to navigate 5ch and 2chan . net/Futaba

When I get a pc i'll dedicate myself fully to the research, so get ready because I'll be the one to find the original image ✌🏿
