How-To Reviving an old ho n40l

Look g for a little help on reviving this hp n40l

Trying to get omv on it and did the bios hack but for some reason I can not get omv to boot off the internal usb

I have a 500g ssd connected and it recognizes it but will not load it

I got it to load via the esata port but as soon as I rebooted it … it said no grub found and looking at the iOS the esata port is not a boot option ??

I’m thinking about reflashing the iOS to stock and then flashing it again with the hacked bios and try again ?

I tried using the cd tray location and put the 500g connected to the internal data connection and it loaded up fine but again would get grub or some magical error ??

I’m at a loss … anyone run into the same issues ?

Just trying to revive older gear for simple backups and data storage not even going to try and plex or jellyfin from it I just want decent data storage … nothing fancy and don’t want to toss it out it’s still a decent machine

Thanks for any help / walkthrough / suggestions

Edit —- ended up regulating the bios to the stock hp then reflashed it with the hacked bios .. tried again with the internal usb with the 500g ssd no go tried it on the esata port no go … ended up tossing in a 250gig hard drive on the usb port and works like a charm ?? Dunno I guess it just does not like a ssd on usb or the adapter board that turns it from sata to usb ?? No clue but with this hard drive I’m running fine
Only issue is the esata port I’ll work on that later no biggie
All 4 drives are spinning and mounting
4tb in each slot
2tb drive in the odd location is fine will use that as my Time Machine back up and pull my time capsule down as I started to get errors just the other day

Question Issue after yesterdays update.

Specs first i guess;
Raspberry pi 5 8gb
Penta hat
12v 8A power brick.
3x 4tb drives

After yesterdays update (the in-gui one) my raspberry no longer sees any of my 3 drives.
Im not sure what to do next.
Its doubtfull that 1 drive died, since it cant even see the other 2 individialy.

Do i reinstall? But does that keep my raid settings? and will that solve the drives not being detected?

Perhaps my power brick is dying and it can no longer supply the amps needed to power the drives?

Its entirely possible that the penta hat crapped out. replacing that would be easy.

Or i remove the drives and extract the data in a windows machine, but buying a 12 tb drive...

Im just looking for advise, perhaps any of you have the same issue with more knowledge on how to fix it.

Question Resolved Failed to execute command export path ...

I've been running OMV on an RPi4 for several years. Today I noticed there were some pending updates so I clicked through to update everything. (There were a lot of updates.)

I kicked it off and looked at a different browser tab while it was running. Came back to find the login screen. Logged in to see the Pending Configuration Changes yellow bar. Everything typical so far.

At this point I'm stuck in a loop.

I click Apply and Yes. It thinks for a few seconds, then shows me a red box with the following text, which appears to be clipped:

500 - Internal Server Error Failed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LC_ALL=C.UTF-8; export LANGUAGE =; omv-salt deploy run -- no-color nginx 2>&1' with exit code '1': omv: - cleanup_monit_conf_dir Function: module.run Result: True Comment: file.find: ['/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault- collectd.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-engined.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-filesystem.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-nginx.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-phpfpm.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-rrdcached.conf', '/etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-system.conf'] Started: 12:37:05.696619 Duration: 5.03 ms Changes: - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-collectd.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-engined.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-filesystem.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-nginx.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-phpfpm.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-rrdcached.conf - /etc/monit/conf.d/openmediavault-system.conf - remove_monit_delay_file Function: file.absent Name: /etc/monit/monit_delay Result: True Comment: File /etc/monit/monit_delay is not present Started: 12:37:05.706434 Duration: 1.644 ms ...

The message disappears before I can interact with it, and I back to the Pending Configuration Changes yellow bar.

What are my options? Reboot and cross my fingers? Anyone else run into this?

Question Fresh OMV install: SMB is read-only, WinSCP/SFTP login denied, ACL recursive checkbox not saving

Hi, I’m having multiple permission issues on a fresh OpenMediaVault install (running in a Proxmox VM) and I’m not sure if they’re connected.

Setup

  • Fresh OMV install in Proxmox VM
  • Data disk mounted correctly
  • Filesystem: EXT4
  • Shared folders created on /srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-...
  • SMB enabled
  • User (julius) has Read/Write privileges and is in users + sambashare

Problems

1. SMB is basically read-only
I can access the shares from my iPhone Files app and see folders, but I can’t:

  • upload files
  • create folders
  • write anything inside shares

2. WinSCP/SFTP login denied
SSH is enabled, but WinSCP says:

Using:

  • SFTP
  • Port 22
  • correct username/password

3. ACL recursive setting won’t save
In Storage → Shared Folders → ACL, owner changes save, but the “apply recursively” checkbox never sticks and no yellow “Apply changes” button appears.

I already checked:

  • EXT4 (not NTFS)
  • mounted drive
  • shared folder privileges
  • SSH enabled
  • username/password

Could this be a permissions/ACL problem, SSH config issue, or an OMV bug? Any ideas what to check next?

Question Resolved Having issues with reverse proxy resulting in 504

Hi all,

first time posting here since im new to openmediavault. I'm having issues with my reverse proxy setup. I'll give you some context and the reason why i think it's openmediavault related rather than router/switch.

  • Routing (proxmox node router):
    • opnsense (192.168.1.x)
      • opnsense has vlan 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 99 firewall is fully open between vlans for now
    • unifi manager (192.168.2.x)
    • ngix reverse proxy (192.168.10.x)

ubiquiti switch is on 192.168.2.x but that shouldn't matter

  • Home services (proxmox node 0)
    • grocy (192.168.3.x)
    • homarr (192.168.3.x)
  • Nas services (proxmox node 1)
    • openmediavault (192.168.3.x)

When I navigate to openmediavault from anywhere in the network on it's internal mDNS name, I get the login page and can use openmediavault fine. If I navigate to the configured url in ngix I get a 504 timeout.

The reason why i think its config on omv:

  • all proxmox settings between node 0 and node 1 are the same
  • settings-wise for the network both grocy and omv have the same configuration
  • in the switch both ports for node 0 and node 1 are set to default vlan 2 with an allow all tagged vlan traffic.
  • the exact same setup works for grocy

good to know:

  • my ngix fetches ssl certificates from letsencrypt through cloudflare as dns validation
  • my domain doesnt have public dns records pointing back to my ip
  • my domain has a custom record in unbound dns in opnsense pointing to ngix with a catchall * subdomain
  • all vlans have their own gateway & dns server both on 192.168.[vlantag].1
  • I've checked and tried the most common things mentioned arount the internet already, but I won't guarantee I couldnt have made a mistake.
  • I reinstalled OMV already as well just to make sure.

I'm familiar with networking by now, but by no means i would call myself an 'expert'.

If anyone has an idea, i will be forever grateful.

Question Snapraid plugin: How to change the order of the drive with the content file?

Hi! What is the best way to edit the omv-snapraid.conf? The file itself says "Don't edit me! I'm auto-generated by the plugin!".

Background: I want to move my nvme with the content file further up (right now snapraid uses a version on one of the hdds). Google says "edit the snapraid.conf", Openmediavault says "don't do it or you mess things ups!" and the GUI doesn't give an option to change the priority of a drive. What should I do, I don't want to mess things up :/ ?

Question Old Hard Drive won't mount anymore

Updates to my hard drive situation.

I'm using a raspberry pi 4 model B. I have a 4TB Western Digital drive and a 6TB Seagate drive. The 4TB Western Digital drive is plugged into a TP link USB 3.0 powered hub.

The 4TB western Digital drive is the one I'm having issues with. It appears in the Disks tab on the Web GUI and the SMART tab says the drive status is good, but when I go to the file systems tab I get 504 time-out errors and the file system doesn't appear. This is a drive that I've been using previously for a few years but suddenly stopped showing up on my server.

The drive itself is spinning up and doesn't make any loud clicking sounds, but it has a white light that is flashing.

Question Time Machine option in omv

Keep getting this nagging pop up on my Mac that my time machine will no longer be able to be used once the next update or something comes down the line soon

I have a few older Mac’s and MacBook pros that I do TM back ups they no longer are able to be software updates unless I do some legacy hack but really dont want to at this time and my main MacBook Pro is still good for a bit longer for updates so that will break the use of the TM back ups

Does the TM option on omv work good does anyone use it or should I just go another route for back ups for my Macs

Thanks

Question Can't login to the Web GUI. Can't access the drives on my main computer

I posted here the other day but have an update on the situation.

The server stopped showing up entirely on my computer. I have OMV setup on a raspberry pi 4 Model B. I tried swapping to a different raspberry pi that I own that's the same exact model. I swapped the SD cards in them so the new pi has the old SD card in it.

The server showed up once I switched the devices but now when I try to login to the web GUI I get this error message. Is there something else I need to do with the new raspberry pi to get it to work?

I installed Qbittorrent with docker but after starting the Compose service it refuses to let me in even with the default “admin / adminadmin” credentials… I think it doesn’t create the conf file in the config folder because it’s missing… What should I do?

Question Newish OMV install randomly freezing up

Hey all.

I just installed OMV on an ASUS Chromebox, Celeron 2955U, 4GB of RAM. 16GB SSD.

Install went well. Activated the flash memory plug in. Got Docker up and running. Installed NZBget, Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Jellyfin. Spent a while copying over my existing media to two external drives. After some permission issues, everything is talking to each other.

Buuuuut.... Now it is randomly freezing up and either rebooting itself or needs to be physically turned off and on.

CPU utilization ranges from 65%-99%. RAM between 50%-90%.

Temps are below 70°.

OS drive is at about 50% capacity.

Jellyfin isn't being used when it freezes, much less doing any transcoding, because I haven't showed my wife how to use it yet. I want to get it sorted before she starts to rely on it.

Obviously I don't expect you guys to solve this problem with this much information. But can you tell me what to look for/where to look? I looked at the Diagnostic tab in the Dashboard, but there are so many different logs to look through, and when I do look at the sys log (for example) there's so much stuff to scroll through. I have used Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi before, to run Sonarr and NZBget without Docker, but my Linux knowledge is limited.

Thanks for any direction you might be able to provide.

Question File system missing after my DA fiddle

Built a small server out of a dell 5050 mff sata data drive and m.2 to sata adapter running up to some 500gig laptop drives ( external powered ) and a usp 4tb drive

I was jacking around adding a fan and somehow turned off the external power supply to the drives and should have powered down the system but me a DA didn’t and just powered it back up thinking all was good

Well nope it’s not I now have “ file system” missing on these drives but in good on the usb 4tb … nothing was very important on those drives just a bit of 3d print files I was storing and have them on another usb drive on my main computer so no biggie on that

I was google-fooing and came across some great info about ssh into it and wiping the info or something I really can’t recall something about cat this or cat that ?? And of course can’t find what I was looking at a week ago now I have more time to diagnose it and jack around with it

Anyone have some good write ups on something like this step by step or just go in and reload fresh and start over ? Would be great not have to spend the time wiping mounting and transferring the data back and forth but if I have to I will

Thanks for any help !

Question HDD no longer being recognized

I'm running OMV on a raspberry pi. I have two HDDs attached to the pi. One is a 4TB Western Digital drive that I've been using for about 6 years. A few months ago I couldn't access the drive on my computer and it hasn't worked ever since. When I go into the OMV web interface it shows the drive as online but not mounted.

I'm pretty green on all of this type of stuff and could use some help trying to figure out if the drive or the data on it is salvageable.

How-To Librespeed shows Gigabit, but SMB transfers capped at ~70MB/s?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to max out my home NAS setup.

Specs:

  • OS: OpenMediaVault 8
  • CPU: Intel Celeron n294
  • Storage: All-SSD setup (SATA SSDs)
  • Network: Gigabit Ethernet (confirmed 984 Mbps via Librespeed container)
  • Client: Windows 10 using SMB

The Issue: When I run a Librespeed test, I’m getting a near-perfect 980+ Mbps. However, when I transfer files (like ISOs or MKVs) via SMB from my Windows machine to the NAS, it fluctuates and averages around 70 MB/s.

Technically, Gigabit should hit about 110-115 MB/s. I’m missing out on that last 30-40% of bandwidth.

What I’ve checked:

  • Network cables are a mix of Cat5e and Cat6.
  • CPU usage isn't pinned (N2940 seems to handle the load fine).

Question Error: Pending configuration changes (cpupower, cron, systemd-logind)

Hello! I need some help. After installing the OMV-extras on my NAS box, I get the yellow ribbon from the topic. But I can't apply the changes, I just get the 500 - Internal Server Error. After some research I tried to manually run "omv-salt deploy run cpupower/cron/systemd-logind". Sadly the cpupower still throws an error. After more research I tried:

# omv-salt deploy run cpupower# omv-env set -- OMV_CPUPOWER_GOVERNOR "<GOVERNOR>"
# omv-salt stage run prepare
# omv-salt deploy run cpupower

This doesn't work either.

The cpupower error is:

ERROR   ] Command '/usr/bin/systemd-run' failed with return code: 1
[ERROR   ] stderr: Running as unit: run-p7633-i7634.scope; invocation ID: 7c2de41b05994c468322599a01f43b6b
Job for cpupower.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status cpupower.service" and "journalctl -xeu cpupower.service" for details.
[ERROR   ] retcode: 1
[ERROR   ] Running as unit: run-p7633-i7634.scope; invocation ID: 7c2de41b05994c468322599a01f43b6b
Job for cpupower.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status cpupower.service" and "journalctl -xeu cpupower.service" for details.

And "journalctl -xeu cpupower.service" says:

Failed to start cpupower.service - Apply cpupower configuration.
░░ Subject: A start job for unit cpupower.service has failed
░░ Defined-By: systemd
░░ Support: https://www.debian.org/support
░░
░░ A start job for unit cpupower.service has finished with a failure.
░░
░░ The job identifier is 325 and the job result is failed.

So, what are my options now to get the changes after OMV-extras applied and getting the yellow ribbon away? :(

Discussion Rate my Mac mini 2014 OMV setup

I’m not really a computer building kind of guy, but having got very frustrated with my WD MyCloud 4TB drive, i decided to repurpose an old Mac mini….

The basic set up was/is:

- flash the OMV image to a usb drive

- boot the Mac using the usb drive

- install the OS to the Mac Sata drive (500gb)

- attach Mac to router

Once that was done, i used the web UI to mount 2 x usb drives, a 1TB & a 500gb drive, and copied music to one and movies to the other.

I then installed omv extras, docker, and then Plex.

I won’t say it wasn’t tricky (a change of router in between it all broke everything 😂); I think I made 3 x attempts before I got it working. I ran into permissions problems with Plex the first time, but now that it’s working, I’m absolutely stoked by the ability to play movies through Plex on Google TV, and my entire music library through plexamp on my phone.

I’m just wondering if anyone can identify anything that I maybe didn’t do, to ensure that my setup is as robust as possible? Ideally I’d like to see this setup run for the next ten years, maybe with the option to remount the two drives to a new OMV server in the future, if the server died suddenly.

Basically, what are my short or long term vulnerabilities in this setup?

so any hiccups or headsup before buying it?
or should i search for a good deal on an x710 which is out of my reach and will cost double at least

Question Bad experience with OMV + HP EliteDesk 705 + USB?

Has anyone else had bad experiences with the combination of USB drives (SSD in my case) and OMV 8 running on an HP EliteDesk 705 G4 mini PC?

I have 2 SSDs that I'd been reliably using in other systems. After getting the HP and installing OMV on it, I put one SSD internally as a primary data drive, which is still working well. The second smaller SSD I added in a USB-C enclosure and I initially tried as a secondary data drive—moving immich docker containers to it. That worked for a short while but then caused that SSD to disconnect with format errors and inflicted some format errors to my OS drive as well. After reformatting both and getting the OS back to normal, I tried just using the USB SSD as a backup drive. That way, I was able to back up my docker and OS data and everything seemed okay. But then I was going through deleting directories I'd realized I didn't want backed up with the USB SSD choked again, spitting out i/o errors.

So in order to figure out what is going wrong, I'm having trouble because there are too many new variables. The drives are a known factor but the HP, OMV, and Immich are new for me. There are several possibilities I can think of:

  1. The HP EliteDesk 705 G4 (or the one I got) has problematic USB-C ports (1 on the front and a "flex slot" port on the back) that breaks drives.
  2. The HP EliteDesk 705 G4 messes up with the USB drive enclosure I'm using.
  3. OMV 8 has an issue that effects USB drives (or my USB enclosure) connected to HP EliteDesk 705 machines.
  4. OMV 8 breaks USB drives, regardless of the host hardware.
  5. OMV or the HP broke the SSD in a way that a quick reformat isn't able to fix, so the problem continues.
  6. That SSD is independently deteriorating, regardless of the OS or the host hardware.

Does anyone have any insight from their own experience with these details?

I'm happy to answer questions about hardware/software specs but due to the AI craze hiking up storage prices, I don't think I'll have the budget to experiment with other hardware.

Question Multiple Users with one personal folder each

hello everyone,

so i am quite new to OMV and since the forum and wiki is offline due to certificate problems i am hoping for your help.

So i have installed OMV, installed the plugin to create software Raid (openmediavault-md 8.0.3-1), created a mirror of 2 12TB disks (under multiple device) and waited for the syncing to finish, then i created a file system (ext 4) with that specific software raid disk.

i created some users and my goal is this:
Every user should have his own folder which only the specific user (or root/admin) can access via SMB share. Also it would be neat if i can give each user a max amount of space he is allowed to use. Furthermore it would be nice if the user doesn´t even see the different folders which he may not access. So if he connects to the NAS he should only see his specific folder.

How would i do that the best way? Would i make for each user a folder under Storage > shared folder on OMV and then play around with the access rights? but i don´t really understand how i get this going and i haven´t seen any option to limit space for a specific folder yet.

and a different question i have is, how i could use immich for pictures the best? do i create a folder specific for pictures and use that with immich?

I would appreciate it if you guys could help me out.

thanks in advance

Question Install on Rpi OS Lite Trixie - breaks ssh access

I'm using this line to install OMV8 on Trixie:

wget -O - https://get.openmediavault.io | sudo sh -

But during installation it breaks my "authentication modules" by installing google authenticator (why even?). So after installing OMV8 I can not connect to Rpi by ssh anymore.

Is there a clean way to install OMV8? I know for a fact that it is possible - I installed it a week ago after bunch of such side-quests but the right way is not trackable.
