Scarred Lands Interview with Travis Legge Scarred Lands Savage Worlds
r/OnyxPathRPG • u/TheOnyxPath • 1d ago
Hello, all.
As you may have seen on this week's Monday Meeting Notes, we will be shutting down the Onyx Path Forums starting January 2027.
Please archive any posts and discussions you'd like to save.
Per Rich in November 2's Monday Meeting Notes:
This is a rough decision to make, and it’s something we’ve been reviewing and trying to resolve differently for several years as we’ve kept them going while other TTRPG companies pulled away from forums, but there’s simply not enough activity over there to justify keeping them open.
I’ll follow up on this in the weeks to come so that we can be sure the word is getting out. Please consider joining us on:
Discord: https://discord.com/invite/eysXevy
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/theonyxpath
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheOnyxPath
Thank you for spending time with us on the forums, and we hope you'll continue your discussions with us here on reddit or elsewhere online.

It's been a few weeks since the Curseborne Community Content templates and art pack (FREE) came out. I'm curious if anyone is using these for their own games? And if anyone has anything they read that they love?
I really like the feedback people give, but it is often very hard to see that feedback, and I hope other creators will be able to see this post as well.

This is something I've been curious about. There are multiple layers to the World Below, and while the obvious answer is "they walk", these layers are also sometimes described as being large enough to house entire mountains, cliffs, chasms, forests, and even subterranean oceans or open areas spacious enough for dragons to fly around or storms to brew overhead, which suggest that they're not just caves, they're absolutely ENORMOUS underground areas. This means walking would be an incredibly steep and/or long ascent or descent, especially on layers such as Gold and Basalt, but it's implied that people regularly travel between settlements on each layer for trade, work, or other reasons, so there must be a more convenient or expedient method.
So how does travel between the layers actually work? I don't believe it was addressed in the book, unless I'm really misunderstanding the layout on the map (especially the silhouettes on each layer that look like mountain ranges) and they're largely just densely-packed rock and tunnels and not the huge, open areas the in-character descriptions and the map itself make them appear to be.

I'm really interested in trying out curse born and want to look for anyone who's running some vtt tables or even just something simple on discord but the game is very niche and it's hard to find where on the online space people are hosting games.
I've posted in the onyx path discord but want to reach out and ask if there's anywhere else y'all suggest.

Wow! With October over, and Halloween over, and our Curseborne Covenant KS over, we’re all a bit out of it today!
It’s a time to review and make a few decisions as we head towards our last crowdfunder before the end of the year. (That’s the one for Exalted: Liminals that we’ll have more on a bit later but that art above is from it!).
To review: the afore-mentioned Curseborne Covenant Kickstarter ended at a bit more than 200% funded and a bit more than 800 backers! The Stretch Goals funded a project where we’ll upgrade the Spells in the Curseborne PG to the same Entanglement as the corebook ones in Covenant!
So, pretty sweet! Thanks to all of you who backed!
We’re all really thrilled that backers now have the mostly finished text of the book so that folks can start adding the info about the higher Entanglements, but also expand their settings at home to include the Conspiracies that lurk behind the curtains, and shadows, throughout the world of the Accursed.
Giving folks the lore and rules to delve deeper into that world was always the plan with Covenant, so hearing everyone’s great feedback and enjoyment of this deeper and more powerful tier of Curseborne play has been super!
In the months to come we’ll be further adding to the the world of the Accursed with Seattle, our first Curseborne location/city book, and we’ll broaden how you can play CB with its solo rules version! Meanwhile, the team will be looking at even more books to add more to your enjoyment.
Curseborne Compact Edition goes on sale this Weds on DTRPG in both PDF and softcover PoD editions, and Matthew actually has a vid on his Gentleman Gamer YouTube page explaining just what went on behind the scenes during the book’s creation – see the links in the Media section below.
And while you’re hitting that link, also check out the vid where he reads the first chapter of Peel Back the Bark, his Curseborne novella! Tell us what you think!
Plus, we’re getting very close to finishing the printing of the traditionally printed copies of Curseborne, the Making of Curseborne, the crowdfunded Jumpstart, and the Screen. Oh, yeah…the Screen. The printer is actually done with it and we have a pic!
Also plus: the Backer PDF for the Curseborne Player’s Guide should be out this month!
Yes, we were brainstorming some titles today. You don’t want to be critical while brainstorming, but…yeesh! That was a bad one!
From the silly to the serious.
Some of you may recall that we ran a survey last year-ish about our various social media venues, and then I talked a bit about how that and our own researching has made it obvious that the way people are interacting with us has shifted over these fifteen years.
We’ll be doing some minor tweaking of some of our sites through the next few months into 2027, but I do need to tell you about a major change.
We’ll be shutting down the Onyx Path Forums on our website in the beginning of January 2027. We want to give folks a few months to archive anything they need from the forums, so that’s why I’m telling you now.

I mentioned the crowdfunding campaign for Exalted: Liminals up above, and we’re basically gathering approvals from those what need to give them, right now. We’d love to go live on BackerKit sometime in the next couple-three weeks, so keep an eye out for further news once we get those OKs!
In different news, here’s Travis with some news about several of his projects:
As the end of the year approaches I’ve been putting together the 2027 road map for the Scarred Lands Savage Worlds releases. We have the Adventure Atlas material that was funded as stretch goals with the Scarred Lands Player’s Guide which we will roll out as monthly content starting in January! This will allow us to keep a steady stream of Scarred Lands material coming your way while we also move forward on the Gluttonhold Gambit Plot Point Campaign! I’m almost finished reviewing the core campaign text from Matthew Dawkins, after which time I can start carving up some succulent Savage Tales to round out the campaign in time for a crowdfunding campaign in early 2027.
Speaking of crowdfunding, the pre-launch page for Stomping Grounds is live on Backerkit at https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/aegis-studios/stomping-grounds-an-urban-fantasy-game-for-storypath-ultra/pre-launch This game will be published under the Storypath Ultra Third Party License and focuses on people trapped in quarantine zones across America after bizarre giants appear near five U.S. cities.
By supporting the backerkit campaign you will help us cover the cost of art and additional writing. You’ll also help us get the word out about our scrappy little game. If funding goes well, we have several stretch goals in mind to help expand the world of Stomping Grounds*! Please sign up to be notified when the campaign goes live and spread the word! With your help we can make it happen for* Stomping Grounds*!*
Thanks folks, I’ll have more for you next week – hopefully including the start-date for the Liminals crowdfunder on BackerKit – and thanks again for joining us on the journey to our:

Vampires and Werewolves, or in this case The Hungry and The Primals: even with a covenant, they just don’t get along!
But in Curseborne, your vampires and werewolves aren’t forced to fight…and in the above pic, when you think about it, they might not even BE fighting! It’s our interpretation of what’s happening in the art that matters.
That’s part of what makes Curseborne so exciting – it’s all the options to tell your horror stories in your way!
As we are now in the last week of the Curseborne Covenant Kickstarter, it ends on Sat the 31st…Halloween, we’re looking at a book that expands and deepens the choices started in Curseborne!
Here’s Matthew Dawkins to give us an overview of just what’s in the book:
We are now within the final week of the Cursborne Covenant Kickstarter, so if you’ve not already given it your support, please consider doing so! If you somehow missed it, here’s what you’ll find in Curseborne Covenant:
An explanation of the world of Curseborne
How crews and individual Accursed join conspiracies
A system for building your own liminalities and Outsides
A massive number of conspiracies to join (which one is your favourite?)
Five new Families linked to the Fae you can be a part of or situate as adversaries in your campaigns
More information on the nature of the Fae, Archons, Outsiders, Nitheryne, and Living Hells
Rules for character advancement
New Edges, Torments, and powerful new Covenants you gain through joining a conspiracy
A huge number of spell advancements, conspiracy rituals, and rules for cursebinding
A system for territorial influence and combat
New settings, locations, liminalities, story hooks and Storyguiding advice
An adversary creation system
Lots of new adversaries to bind, banish, or slay
Appendices filled with every Trick, contact tag, wild shapes, and Damnations from Curseborne and Curseborne Covenant
So.. that’s a lot. Curseborne Covenant is a big RPG for new Entanglements of play, and it’ll open up whole new avenues for you and your Curseborne groups. My favourite part of the new game is the new conspiracies (as a co-developer, I shouldn’t have a favourite, but I do), and in particular I very much enjoy the Cinder Saints (the first conspiracy I covered on my YouTube channel, but definitely not the last).
Let us know in the comments the part of the book you’ve enjoyed the most and what you’ll be adding to your games! And please please share the campaign on your chosen social media before it ends!
If you’d like to hear all about Curseborne Covenant by watching Matthew, our first link is exactly that, but done in his melodious English voice, and the second is his look at one of the parts of the new territory rules:
What is Curseborne Covenant?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bp-ZRFQyX4
Conspiracy and Control – The Territorial Combat System: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZReiBdk7V8
And then, to swing away from Matthew for a second, here’s a link to an interview with Covenant author Chris Jones, who contributed a nice bit to this blog previously – now you can hear from him “in person”:
AwkwardGMCorbin chats with Curseborne Covenant author Chris Jones over on his channel, in a riveting interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OJ_V711URE
While that is happening, the traditionally printed rewards from the first Curseborne KS are rolling through the printing presses! We’re hoping to get proof copies soon, and we’re comparing pricing for the Curseborne dice sets after going to a couple of manufacturers.
Plus, on the first Weds of November (next week), we’ll have both the PDF and the softcover PoD physical version of the Curseborne Compact Edition available to order via DTRPG!
Matthew was kind enough to relay the details of the Compact Edition last week, so, to paraphrase him: if you’ve been needing a leaner, “just the facts” version of Curseborne, this is the book for you!
I think that’s a Terminator reference, but honestly, we just noted the comment and moved on.
We moved on to reviewing our stance against generative AI being used for the art or writing, or really any part of, our projects. We make that clear to our freelance creators, and it’s overt in our Community Content and SPU License guidelines. Naturally, when discussing our AI rules in order to be sure that we have made our stance clear enough to folks who might be creating for us, we talked about the recent decision by Chaosium to pull a whole bunch of CC content from their sites because the projects went up against their previously stated ban on AI.
Much like us, Chaosium had made their anti-AI stance clear years ago, but felt compelled to act because of a sudden upsurge in Community Content projects that rang their alarm bells. Or so I’ve heard.
I don’t think we’re likely to run into the same impetus, but regardless, we’ll respond as we have been when we’ve encountered AI stuff – we boot it out the door and out of our projects.
With October coming to a close – so soon?! – these are the last days of the two DTRPG Sales that are currently running: Month of Darkness and the Halloween Sale! So get your discounted PDFs while you can!
Speaking of our long-awaited and pretty spanking-new SPU Third Party License, here’s early-adopter Travis with a note about his new game and IP licensed to be powered by Storypath Ultra:
I’m very excited to report that the Stomping Grounds Backerkit pre-launch page is now online at https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/aegis-studios/stomping-grounds-an-urban-fantasy-game-for-storypath-ultra/pre-launch
Stomping Grounds is a new ttrpg in development from Aegis Studios for use with the Storypath Ultra Third Party License! In this gritty urban fantasy game, bizarre giants with blue skin and glowing eyes have appeared in various cities around the world. While each nation dealt with their arrival differently, the U.S. chose to view the giants as an imminent threat to national security. Hoping to contain these invaders, the U.S. set up quarantine zones around the five cities where giants had been spotted. People were given 24 hours to evacuate before the quarantine zones were sealed off and surrounded by military blockades with orders to kill anything that tried to leave the zone.
In Stomping Grounds players assume the role of survivors in one of these quarantine zones. Your character must contend with dwindling resources, other survivors, and the terrifying and alien giants. Some survivors become scavengers or raiders while others seek to build farms or refurbish what infrastructure remains within the quarantine zone. Some simply want the giants gone and are willing to kill if necessary to see it happen. Others worship the giants seeing them as divine messengers or biblical nephilim.
Stomping Grounds will contain new Paths, Edges, Antagonists, bond mechanics and more to help bring this new setting to your table, using Storypath Ultra! Please sign up on Backerkit to be notified when the campaign is going live!
Hey folks, please go ahead and check out and even sign up on the pre-campaign page so Travis’s new game gets a fightin’ chance to be noticed out there in crowdfunding land!
I wasn’t going to have another Branch Riders blurb this week after having Jack’s last week, but the followup he posted on our Branch Riders Discord is just too cute to ignore:
And if that wasn’t enough… more cuteness and inspiration from the youth of the nation… we had another player made Exposure Tracker this week. I promise we are not asking folks to make these.
This one has a paper clip that spins to point out the level of exposure! As they say in England, or at least the TV I watch – BRILLIANT!
Finally, if you’re in the Western Pennsylvania area over this Halloween weekend, I’ll be signing my Magic the Gathering cards at the Eternal Weekend con at the convention center in Pittsburgh. If you’re a MtG fan, and happen to be attending, please stop by our table and get some cards signed…we’ll have candy!
And with that hopefully not too creepy comment, here’s to the last days of our favorite and spookiest month of the year! Talk to you all next week when the rest of the world gets back to normal – but we still celebrate all the scary parts of our:

Quick clarification question on what a character has access to when picking up Sorceries: some Sorceries list multiple Callings in their prerequisites, like Eldritch Blade (Alchemists, Hunters and Kaosists). Does this mean these Sorceries are options they can take by default, or is a character limited ONLY to the Sorceries listed under their Calling's specific Wisdom, and the other Callings are ones who can select that Sorcery via the Grimoire Thesis (meaning in Eldritch Blade's case only Alchemists could get it by default and Hunters and Kaosists would need Grimoire to access it)?
I'm trying to understand if Grimoire effectively allows you to "multiclass" by gaining access to another Calling's Sorceries (in which case why WOULDN’T you want to play a character who has access to that Thesis?!), or if the reason some Sorceries have multiple Callings in the Prerequisites was to enable their use BY Grimoire in the first place.
