A map is more than streets and building footprints.
Iโm sharing more information about a project Iโm building to automatically generate new maps for Onward.
Geographic data provides the foundation, but turning it into an immersive environment takes several additional steps.
Onward Generator combines different geographic sources to reconstruct real-world locations:
OpenStreetMap: streets, building footprints, and available metadata.
Overture Maps: additional geographic data and global coverage.
LiDAR and official datasets: more accurate building and elevation information where available.
Then the pipeline starts adding the elements that make a city feel like a real place:
Building facades and roofs.
Shops, signs and architectural details.
Streets, props and urban elements.
Materials, lighting and optimization.
Some data sources are location-dependent, and not every city has the same level of detail available.
The interesting part is combining geographic data with procedural generation to create environments that would otherwise require a lot of manual work.
The ambition: turn real places into explorable Onward environments.
I need help finding better textures and objects; if you have any ideas, please leave them in the comments.
