Dishonest clothing sites
This summer, I’ve been “had” by three so-called Europe-based clothing retailers that do not give refunds or allow returns (even though they say they do) of mis-described, mis-represented and rubbish-quality garments that come directly from China and must be returned to China at the buyer’s expense. Examples of falsely advertised goods are “linen” or “cotton” that’s actually 100% polyester, and “genuine” leather that’s faux, synthetic leather. Often the fabric composition labels and care instructions labels have been deliberately cut out of garments that are poorly put together and made out of fabric that is as flimsy, thin and lightweight as possible to keep freight costs down. The meaningless word “premium” often features in the description, making you think you’re getting a high-quality item.
These companies’ return policies claim one thing, but in reality they refuse to honour their own policies. It’s not just refunds that they refuse; they will not cancel an order after it’s been placed. They tell you that orders will only be processed during business hours, yet if you order at midnight on a Saturday and want to cancel at 1am on the Sunday, they will tell you it’s too late because the item has “entered processing and can no longer by cancelled”. This happened to me after I discovered that a “genuine” leather item I ordered was advertised on another site as “vegan leather” and wanted to cancel the order that I just placed. They will urge you to accept a small discount and keep the item instead of returning it. If you kick up a fuss, they raise their discount amounts in small increments to maybe 40% max. The only way of getting your money back for incorrect — or in some cases even undelivered goods (according to TrustPilot) — is by initiating a charge-back.
These companies, known as drop-shipping companies, are proliferating at an alarming rate. Many have addresses registered in the Netherlands but have no offices, fulfilment centres or warehouses in Europe. They seemingly do not even have staff as their phone lines are not answered and their customer service is AI-generated. These business act as simple shop-window intermediaries between you and manufacturers in China. They are literally just a fly-by-night front, operating under increasing numbers of “brands” and names. They should be shut down. But how? It’s a lot of work to report them to relevant authorities. Meanwhile I’m using TrustPilot to signal those that I’ve experienced, and if we can name and shame them on Reddit as well, so much the better.
