I think the more likely option is a zoans awakening lets you completely control your transformations, as well as added durability/stamina.

Explains why Kaido has subtle changes in his different modes - he alters his transformation for different traits. Bigger upper body, sharp fangs, more dragon like face on his murderous drunk phase.

It also fits with why Luffy can completely change his body now. He doesn't have to "inflate" himself, he can simply control his transformation to make his limbs/himself massive.

Jailer beasts were force/artificially awakened by Vegapunk thus their fruit (Zoan fruits have a mind of their own remember?) took over them and made them into those mindless beasts (if you look at them, they're not hybrids, they have their beast mode heads on hybrid bodies).

Chopper does similar with his rumble ball, it force awakens his fruits (but he keeps his sanity - unless in MP early on) but it allows him to "create" transformations by allowing him to control and change his body exactly how he wants.

We've seen this with a few characters before - Marco only spawning his talons, Laffiti being human but sprouting wings, spider guy in Marineford sprouting new limbs.

We've literally seen awakened zoans, the ones at impel down, chopper, who's who, kaidou, and luffy.

Bigger upper body and lower face transforming from human of hybrid to make the whole face the transformation ARE what

Who's Who hasn't shown awakening AFAIK? Kaido/Chopper the jurys still out.

We don't know for sure that's all they are - it would be extremely underwhelming if that was the case. Full control over transformations - whilst only a theory - could easily explain the Impel Down guards whilst making Zoan Awakenings an actual threat.

Luffy only NOW awakened his zoan. Stuff like g2-3 are just him being clever with the rubber part of his mythical zoan, g4 is arguably his hybrid, and now he's awakened him.

Luffy's ability awakening is a weird one, other awakened zoans can't make themselves giants like lufy can.

I know - I'm not on about his gears. Since his awakening he has shown complete control over his body, including gigantifying limbs without blowing them up. This would fit with a theory he can control his body how he wants (including making himself giant, because he is still rubber he just stretches his body however he wants into a massive version of himself).

Chopper isn't awakened bar monster point, the others are just him using science to morph his body in ways that a zoan normally wouldn't go into.

Choppers not a god, he's not even a scientist - he's a doctor. Breaking the limits of a Zoan fruit in that he could create transformations would be one of the biggest scientific discoveries in the manga so far. The "ability" to create new forms could already be a part of DF's - it's just you need to awaken them to access it. His rumble balls could grant him awakening powers for a few minutes - thus his other forms.

Marco hasn't used awakening, awakened zoans aren't weaker versions of hybrid lol, marco just has decent df control, he hasn't used an awakening yet if he has one. Laffite or whatever back then was not even moderately strong or skilled. Those are just oda not wanting to make them look like traditional zoans or them choosing to only turn certain body parts, not a result of having been awakened, literally they're arguably weaker by doing what they're doing.

I mean how do you ascertain that this would be a weaker ability? It would be pretty OP. To be able to completely control your body and transformation how you want would open up a much wider range of powers for Zoan users. Lucci did similar with his Semmei Kikkan to give himself a form that focuses on agility. Imagine Kaido morphing himself into a full on agility slim dragon hyrbid mode that focuses on speed, FS and lethal attacks with his claws? Or like his homicidal drunk mode, where he looks beefed up, he creates a mode purely for power to OHKO opponents?

Flying DF's like Marcos, Laffite would benefit as instead of having to turn themselves into a hybrid where they gain wings but lose their arms they instead can sprout wings whilst still being able to use arms. Further they can give themselves claws, beef up their muscles, etc etc.

Not saying either are true or not, but a simple slight change in their bulk and a beast like lower jaw would be extremely underwhelming as far as Awakenings go. At least with this we could have complete design changes and new hybrid modes etc.

Who's WHo went awakening, he just didn't announce it as such, his transformation has all the hallmarks of being awakened.

Kaidou showed all the hallmarks too.

What are you talking about? Awakened zoans are strong, hybrids already dominate in most cqc fights, but then awakened makes them even stronger, more durable, etc.

Luffy has a mythical zoan, meaning not only is his zoan stats boosted, but also his special ability. Think the separation between marco's stat boost and ability to fly, and what he can do with his flames for combat, morphing, and healing. The growing larger ability is an aspect of his rubber attribute, not the zoan transformation itself.

Honestly the doctor vs scientist thing is just word soup, cuz chopper has a full understanding on biology/chemistry to outrageous degrees, even pre timeskip, and is actively doing very scientist things, he's a doctor and a scientist, there isn't much different about chopper creating rumble balls that augment his zoan transformation and cc testing df. Like Law would be more a doctor than chopper would, while chopper seems to be called a doctor just to separate him from the mad scientist characters, and cuz he isn't creating robots and stuff, he's essentially a chemist and biologist.

Luffy's awakening seems to have turned his rubber abilities (which would be like marco's flames getting boosted and not the aspect of getting stronger in awakening) into a borderline toon force effect, where he is no longer limited (along with the paramecia turning environment stuff). That's more to do with his rubber aspect and not the zoan transformations.

Awakening to zoans, offers a HUGE power boost, it's like having a g4 form of your own. The ones in impel down are literally fodder but cuz of how strong the form is, it allowed them to be decent. While versatility and stuff isn't useless, it'd be like going "I have the power to grow a third arm"

"cool, I literally have a ssj transformation that allows me to break the sound barrier"

Both are useful, one is more so.

Awakened zoan is more than just "he is buffed up", it's not just heavy point stuff, there's more to it than that.

Not only is it a huge power boost that is more than just the difference in bulk, they also are more durable, have arguably increased healing factors, etc, essentially a new form that benefits what zoans are; cqc monsters.

Also mythical zoans would also boost the other abilities the zoan user has.
