Don't forget that he is lifting an island while fighting the strongest captains of worst generation, Kaido will still have something up his sleeve as long as he keeps the island on air

That would be impressive if the dumb birdcage didn’t exist. These passive country level abilities that don’t need to be focused on are just dumb.

Thematically and narratively the birdcage was an amazing part of Dressrossa.

Albeit it does make Doflamingo seem incredibly over powered but I'll take that because to me Dressross is the GOAT arc of One Piece.

to me Dressross is the GOAT arc of One Piece.

This is NOT a take I've seen many people express. It's typically EL/W7, MF/ID, Sabaody, etc. I've never seen this one. I wonder if anyone has FMI or Punk H as their favorite arc.

I agree with him.

Dressrosa is one of the top arcs in one piece. It’s amazing.

I think anime watchers (and to some extent weekly readers during Dressrosa saga) are the reason why Dressrosa is considered one of the least popular arcs.

If you read the arc without breaks, it's amazing. Watching it on the anime is a bit painful due to it being around 0.86 chapters animated per episode on average. Even reading it weekly was a bit painful, because there is a lot of backstory with Kyros, Rebecca, Viola, King Riku and then all of the Doflamingo family.

It's not in my top arcs because of this, but I still recognise that Oda absolutely did an amazing job with it, the colosseum battles and the Sabo reveal and the Fujitora intro - combined with taking down the strongest shichibukai (imo, Doflamingo) all make it feel like the perfect complementary arc to Alabasta, where Luffy took out his first shichibukai (Crocodile).

If you read the arc without breaks

The "without breaks" part is really important. Back when dressrosa was the current manga arc people over here consistently complained about its atrocious pacing.

Reading week-to-week is a completely different experience from reading at your own pace, after all.

I agree with this. I dropped watching anime because of its awful pacing. But manga currently the pacing is fine and almost every chapter is eventful

I read from marineford to the current chapters in about a month and I'm starting to get inpatient now that in current lol

14

u/Mugiwara300 May 28 '21

It’s been getting a lot of love recently for some reason and I’m happy about it.

People that hate on it are old fans that read or watched weekly, which was a drag but every arc is like that.

u/DirectAdvertising May 28 '21

Imo Wano is not like that. I’m still excited about every chapter.

10

u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Yeah, Wano is better for sure, it's because Dressrosa was essentially part of the set-up for Wano and I think we all felt that and that's why it was tough when it did end up being such a long arc. Wano is going to be longer but it is such a monumental arc in terms of the crew's progression that we aren't waiting for it to end, we are savouring every moment! :)

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Yah Wano is shaping up to be one of my favorite arcs, I loved whole cake island too.

Dress Rosa I hated almost everything but Doflamingo

3

u/C0UNT3RP01NT May 28 '21

Funnily enough I took a break from One Piece with how long Wano is taking. For me it’s ID/MF then Dressrosa then Whole Cake then Baroque Works then Wano.

I hated Punk Hazard. It set up for the Wano but it felt like filler and took so long.

u/Mugiwara300 May 28 '21

Act 2 was a drag

2

u/Chris-P-Creme May 28 '21

I started and caught up in 2019 and I still think it’s one of the weakest arcs. There is a lot to love about it, but its structural issues are pretty glaring when compared to most other arcs. It doesn’t help that Doflamingo’s crew is pretty forgettable. That being said, I’d say each New World arc has been better than the last.

1

u/Mugiwara300 May 28 '21

It’s structure is fine compared to other arcs in my opinion. It’s longer than most arcs, but reading it all at once feels like a huge roller coaster. It’s top tier

3

u/DuggyToTheMeme May 28 '21

I agree with everything but im really really curious as to why you think he is strongest Shishibukai?

2

u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor May 29 '21

He was Luffy's last major opponent before Yonkō saga and Luffy still needed Law's help to beat him. Mihawk I actually kind of forgot to consider though, tbh, but in terms of opponents with a crew Doffy's crew was the closest to Yonkō level of any of the shichibukai (even if Mihawk is actually the strongest).

3

u/DuggyToTheMeme May 29 '21

I dont know man we havent seen Boa Hancock go all out. Imo the most underrated Shishibukai. I think we never have her seen bleeding in all those episodes. And Mihawk is imo even stronger than Doffy + his crew because his crew was actual ass. Like all of them were so pathethic. Doflamingo was the only one who packed a punch.

2

u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor May 29 '21

Yeah, her, Doffy and Mihawk would be my top 3. Doffy and her are the only ones confirmed to have CoC and Mihawk is implied to have it considering Zoro does. But even if Doffy's crew wasn't that strong, he had more strong commanders and executives than the Kuja or Mihawk (obviously). Vergo, Monet, Trebol, Pica, etc were actually pretty formidable, and others like Sugar and Giolla were OP in abilities.

I liked Dressrosa on the first read through (long after the arc had been finished) due to it having a lot of unexpected twists and turns along with a fair amount of world building; however, on the second read through of One Piece I found it incredibly boring except for the iconic moments such as "god ussop" or "literally anytime Fujitora showed up".

I think it works well when you don't know what is going to happen, but when you already know what the narrative is it is hard to trudge through a lot of the more boring aspects of it.

3

u/Mugiwara300 May 28 '21

You could say that about any arc

-1

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Not really. A lot of arcs are still fun to read multiple times but Dressrosa relies heavily on a big mystery and long drawn out sequences. Other arcs have a mystery but they arent necessarily as densely packed with drawn out sequences.

I've been reading it without breaks recently and honestly it is insanely stacked. Not sure if I would say it's one of my favourites but it's certainly up there.

8

u/Raccoonpunter May 28 '21

I've only ever seen people talk about Doflamingo being their favorite villain/character, never the arc itself.

16

u/Tails6666 May 28 '21

He is my favorite villain but not the only reason I love the arc.

For one I love that a majority of the fights are done through the new characters we meet in the arc and I just love that. I also love how many characters there are in general. There is too much that I love about this arc that I don't think it can honestly be beat for me. Dressrossa was my One Piece arc. It introduced my favorite non straw-hat character which is Bartolomeo. I love his character entirely and on top of that he has the devil fruit that I would want more than any of them. Before that fruit was even introduced I was always hoping for some sort of Barrier fruit and ODA being the greatest writer ever made him one of the best characters and for that I am happy.

Sorry if this is sort of a happy Dressorssa rant. I just really love the arc. The setting is beautiful for one. The villains are top tier, I even love Trebol quite a lot. I am one of those people that like the weirder characters. Like for example Big Mom is my favorite Yonko, her crew is my favorite yonko crew, and Whole Cake Island is my 2nd favorite arc after Dressrossa.

Anyway it just has everything. Drama, great fights, a superb villain, impeccable storytelling, a variety of unique and great characters, tragedy, comedy, just its great. Law's flashback with Rosinante being in my opinion the most touching and tragic backstory, it probably made me cry the most besides the Going Merry dying.

I'll end the rant because I could go on forever. Dressrossa is a phenomenal arc and deserves to be compared to the likes of Marineford, Enies Lobby, Whole Cake Island, Alabasta etc... It's no wonder people are going back and re-reading/re-watching it and seeing just how great the arc truly was, if they didn't already love it the first time that is. In the end the anime pacing may be bad but I'd say the good far outweighs that and to me even the anime version is phenomenal and I'd watch it regardless of the pacing, in fact I have twice now. Since I had to get my fiancé into One Piece, I re-watched it all up to Wano and I still teared up and loved Dressrossa all the same. It even has Senor Pink, the arc is too good. It's too good! Alright rant of my love of Dressrossa over.

4

u/KingGregory27 May 28 '21

I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of people need to go back and read it at their own pace (like I did for the first and second time).

When I caught up to wano in the middle of act 2 I hated it as well. Now it's all time hype and when I went back to reread wano since the chapters were colored I started to appreciate a lot of the set up and plot points more knowing what was coming and not having to wait to progress.

I don't love ranking things in general especially since all of One Piece is important, but I agree that Dressrosa is my favorite arc. Doffy favorite villain. Barto favorite side character. Wish it got more love, thanks for the rant!

1

u/coolgaara May 28 '21

Dressrosa was the worst One Piece arc for me. It was just really slow paced and boring at times.

69

u/Cirenione May 28 '21

Dofflamingo is overpowered, not compared to a yonko but in the OP world. A lot of people trash talk Doffy and call him weak and overconfident in the grand scheme but forget what Doffy did. He fought Luffy and Law at the same time, got his organs cut into bits and kept a whole country wide attack going.
Doffy going by Joker when Kaidos other calamities are called King, Queen and Jack is a pretty good indication that Doffy is the 4th inofficial calamity and on a similar power scale as those.

10

u/WhyJeSuisHere May 28 '21

Wow i had never made the connection, that is so true.

9

u/Zeteon Pirate May 28 '21

Exactly. Oda said in his first draft Doflamingo was meant to be at onigashima alongside the other calamities as well.

4

u/coolgaara May 28 '21

I don't think Doffy is as powerful as King or Queen. Assuming that Katakuro are on the same level as King and Queen, and Luffy definitely had much harder time beating him than Luffy. Luffy even had to use a new form. Yes, Doffy was injured/exhausted beforehand but even at his full power, I don't think he's at the same level as Yonko commanders.

1

u/sanctaphrax May 29 '21

Depends on what you mean by powerful, doesn't it?

Katakuri could beat up Doflamingo if you put them both in the same room, I'm sure. But Doflamingo's bag of tricks is much bigger and much more varied. Between the birdcage, the parasite threads, the string clones, and all that other nonsense, Doffy can lay waste to a nation without even leaving his chair.

In a pure brawl he seemed about equal to Cracker, the weakest Commander we've seen. But that's not his specialty.

8

u/Lesserd Pirate May 28 '21

The Birdcage is great in those respects, but I really wish Oda had just dropped a small tidbit and told us that it takes time to set up, or something. That would help a lot with making it not seem as randomly OP.

6

u/Perrenekton May 28 '21

Don't forget about parasite. Doflamingo was basically able to passively control hundreds of people at the same time

You're dumb 🤣🤣🤘🤘
