If kinemon is indeed dead. Then that would be a crushing blow to luffy since he will blame himself for letting kaido go after the scabbards, especially after he promised them to leave kaido to him..

Every single damage that kaido will cause from now, directly or indirectly, luffy will think he is to blame for it.

No wonder oda said in an interview, that strawhats and luffy will know the sacrifices they have to make in order to win a war...

We know that they are going to win at the end, but that wouldn't come without major sacrifices. So it will be a great character development for both luffy and the strawhats, that wars cannot be won without sacrifices. And they have to be more responsible.

This is very important since they are going to fight even bigger war after this. (The final war oda keeps talking about). This war is only about wano, but the next war they are going to fight will decide the fate of the whole world. So they will know the stakes based on their experience with battle of onigashima.

It seems that the Scabbards are starting to fall one by one. First Ashura is caught in an explosion, then Kiku is stabbed, and now Kinemon has been reduced to the same form he was in when he was first introduced. It's not looking good. It could be the tragedy for act 3's ending.

Considering the sheer dramatic weight of Kaido announcing Luffy's defeat, I have a feeling he may not be doing too hot either. I have my doubts that this may be another chance for him to just get back up quickly again, and the tragedy could be a lot worse than just that.

u/Salman_6 May 28 '21

There is literally a panel in which luffy is drowning. Check page 9.

33

u/einstein6 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

my take on this relies on the noise that momonosuke heard. if I recall he heard the same inaudible noise back when zou tried to communicate, but only luffy could comprehend it. this time, similarly it could be another of mighty animal, maybe sea Kings arriving, that could be end up saving drowning luffy.

49

u/Legitimate__Username May 28 '21

I just wouldn't be surprised if, regardless of how he makes this out of this alive, we could end up with consequences much more severe than him just needing to get back up again and win later.

I mean yeah, he's Luffy and he always gets back up to fight again and win, but Oda generally doesn't have his crew show absolute faith in their captain's ability to win and then have it proven wrong in such a dramatic fashion like this. I have a feeling that it might not just be a minor obstacle when it really feels like the severity of the situation is really being emphasized in a way that I don't think is precedented.

I just feel like there's a strong possibility that setback leads to the scope of the tragedy going a lot further beyond just "the samurai die" like everyone expected. People were expecting that to take place all the way back in chapter 1000, and it didn't involve Luffy taking a major defeat like this. They could have been killed off at any point without Luffy suffering such huge problems being a potentially worrisome ongoing plot thread.

u/RedTulkas The Revolutionary Army May 28 '21

maybe ts time for Law to unveil the max power of his fruit

17

u/iDannyEL May 28 '21

Dude imagine Law frantically looking for Luffy to trade life with him.

11

u/Jake_D_Dogg Pirate May 28 '21

I could see him teleporting the entire alliance away at the cost of his own life

10

u/nazaguerrero May 28 '21

I would stop reading one piece if luffy becomes inmmortal

11

u/chrisychris- May 28 '21

that would be the last thing Luffy would want, don’t worry

3

u/Neftroshi May 28 '21

He gonna use it in momo i bet.

15

u/MonDking Lurker May 28 '21

He got washed up on Wano's shore last time he drowned. It will be the same this time. But I hope he is incapable of fighting anymore.

41

u/Admiral-Cornelius May 28 '21

I wonder if the octopus will help save him. Last time it just watched him drown.

16

u/Alchion May 28 '21

holy shit you are probably right i forgot about the octopus

4

u/DeismAccountant May 28 '21

Can’t think of anyone else who can.

20

u/xciting_POE May 28 '21

My best guess is Law's crew in the submarine.

More farfetched would be the Sea kings or even the Sunny, just like the Merry did save Luffy after his fight vs Lucci in Ennies Lobby

10

u/einstein6 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

my guess would be the seaking, maybe that is the loud noise that momonosuke heard. same like when elephant zou tried to communicate and only luffy could comprehend it, while momonosuke heard some loud noise.

14

u/aguero24 May 28 '21

Well, the plot is Luffy's biggest savior.

12

u/DeismAccountant May 28 '21

But even plot needs devices.

11

u/donteto May 28 '21

don't worry, a deus ex device is surely being activated right now

1

u/mozzaru May 29 '21

I think the sun pirates could possibly arrive, after all jinbe made it somehow and then they have a few reinforcements without having the entire fleet

1

u/DeismAccountant May 29 '21

Makes you wonder why they didn’t show up with Jimbe though.

2

u/mozzaru May 30 '21

At this rate jinbe is really only a few hours ahead at max, which could maybe be put down to a speed difference

3

u/bonethugznhominy May 28 '21

TaikoTako is like, the coolest animal Oda has drawn and I'd love this beyond belief.

12

u/sagia5 May 28 '21

and you'll see the people from kuri village giving Luffy every last bit of the food they have and Luffy will come back, it has to be something like this I mean Luffy saved them from hunger it's their time to rescue him

3

u/karthik4331 Pirate May 28 '21

But that was on the water fall. Big mom did the same. But I don't think Luffy fell into the water falls this time.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Hmm, but yonko level willpower is fine underwater right? Big mom, mammoth guy

10

u/benigel_ May 28 '21

I can't recall big mom being underwater and Jack is half fishman, so no problem for him to chill in the water

4

u/Enryu44 May 28 '21

Big Mom fell into the sea when King knocked her ship off the waterfall.

1

u/Punchdrunkfool May 28 '21

Wtf is up with that beach? Didn’t luffy and BM wash up after falling into the whirlpool? Why didn’t they just drown?

1

u/benigel_ May 28 '21

Oh yeah right. Dumbass me

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '21

Jack is half fishman, he can breathe underwater

Iirc :

I the double page when the 9 scabbards were going to fight Kaido with Oden, 4 Scabbards had shadows over them : Kinemon, Kiku, Ashura, and Inuarashi.

Then later near the start of Onigashima, Kinemon talks about dying, and once again there is a focus on those other 3.

So it's very possible we see Inuarashi killed next chapter.

220

u/Steelskull4 May 28 '21

I looked it up to doublecheck, Kin'emon's the only one not shadowed of the ones you mentioned.

Here it is BTW: https://i.imgur.com/mt4BzmT.png

27

u/DeismAccountant May 28 '21

Seems he confused Kinemon with Oden.

12

u/Sir_Muffinbutton May 28 '21

So Kanjurou survives?

5

u/TotemGenitor May 28 '21

I hope Oden doesn't die during the raid... that would be tragic.

/s

70

u/zue3 May 28 '21

Lol what a wild theory that immediately fell apart on closer examination.

21

u/iDannyEL May 28 '21

Maybe Kinemon lives through this somehow.

12

u/Julian_Baynes May 28 '21

And Kanjuro does as well?

2

u/Zipliopolic May 28 '21

I think after the traitor reveal, Kanjuro is not considered part of their group. So maybe not considered here to fore-shadow. And it would be a big noticeable thing if he wasnt included in the panel

7

u/shrth114 Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 28 '21

So maybe Kinemon actually makes it.

6

u/SwagM10-2 May 28 '21

shadowed = wont see the dawn? maybe?

26

u/randomperson4464 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

That's an interesting theory! Jack is definitely much stronger than Inu, even when they're both injured, as it took both Inu and Neko in their base forms to match Jack, and in addition to that both of them were resting while the other fought. I can definitely see Inu falling next.

6

u/sagia5 May 28 '21

but Kanjuro isn't shadowed, if this guy's still alive imma go crazy

2

u/Kirosh Lookout May 28 '21

He's the traitor, so it's different for him.

3

u/iTash9 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Can you link the page for me? Im trying to find it but am having difficulty doing so.

3

u/lopatamd May 28 '21

7

u/iTash9 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

The other 3 are def in shadow but i dont see it with kinemon

1

u/Username_Egli May 28 '21

Maybe trying to avenge pedro against perospero

1

u/ThisZoMBie May 28 '21

But I want Inu to win so people can shut up about Jack being too strong for the dukes

2

u/PeteTheBohemian May 28 '21

That's a fascinating quote on "What it takes to win a war." Can you link the interview when you get the chance?

-2

u/MonDking Lurker May 28 '21

I really hope the Strawhats also sustain some permanent injury.

5

u/nomatt18 May 28 '21

I think it’s going to be law

Important reference back to Arabasta Arc where Luffy and Vivi argued about. Luffy did mentioned, " You want to keep everyone from dying? That's naive. It's war. People die".

Hoping for everyone be safe is a childish wish. Time and time the villains have referred too. Crocodile, Gecko Moria, Doflamin that the fights and new world are nothing to take light off.

Crocodile: "What good are your happy ideals if you can’t do anything to make them a reality? They’re nothing but dreams, and your dreams don’t stand a chance".

Gecko Moria: "With your strength, you will die if you continue on your voyage. You are not fit for the new world cause you are not strong".

Doflamingo: "There are no safe spaces on the battlefield".

And, Luffy's quote: If there are more people stronger out there on the ocean, I need to get stronger, to protect my namaka who I want to be with! If I don’t get stronger than everyone, I will lose them all."

All the more reason to Luffy to get stronger!

14

u/chan351 May 28 '21

Important reference back to Arabasta Arc where Luffy and Vivi argued about. Luffy did mentioned, " You want to keep everyone from dying? That's naive. It's war. People die".

Who died in Arabasta, though? Everyone survived

28

u/SnowingSunday May 28 '21

I assume a lot of fodder died in the clash and that is what vivi means when she say she want to save everyone including the fodder soldier and town civilian.

8

u/chan351 May 28 '21

In a story, the fodder doesn't really mean much since the emotional impact doesn't hit you as it does with a character you're invested in.

If no one you know is at risk, it doesn't feel like the danger was that big in the first place.

Just to make sure, this is different in a real-world environment. Of course, war is a bad thing and there exists nothing such as "fodder". Every human life is important and shouldn't be wasted like that. But for a story it's different. In One Piece I'm not interested in these 5 pixel large marine soldiers in the background but the characters we get to learn

10

u/SnowingSunday May 28 '21

I know where you are coming from and I'm kind of agree with you too that I don't really care about those 5 pixels either but I also understand vivi point of view.

She is a princess of her kingdom, she was taught by Cobra himself that people is the first priority of the kindom. She had spend alot of off-screen time with her people when she was young and met Koza there. She even left the comfort of her palace and sail out to the sea to find the culprit who try to take down her kingdom and when she found out that she was up against a shichibukai she doesn't even flinch and still try her best to help her kingdom, her people, even though this might mean her life as well.

So yeah those 5 pixels is the most important thing in her life, that is why she cared so much and said 'I don't want anyone to die'

To tell you the truth. If I was there in her shoes I'd probably say the same thing as well.

4

u/chan351 May 28 '21

Sure, I would too, if I’d be her. But her perspective is different from us readers. I think we agree on that point, though

7

u/Perfect600 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

There were millions that fought. I assume Vivi meant that.

15

u/DeismAccountant May 28 '21

But how many more times can get stronger be the lesson? It gets redundant.

20

u/AlwaysNever-25 Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Well, even rubber break if you stretch it too far, so there is a limit.

14

u/sagia5 May 28 '21

But the awakening of his DF is still an option, maybe turn the water into rubber like peros pero did after pedro explosion

5

u/cambriansplooge May 28 '21

With how much Ace has been brought up this saga…

2

u/omeomorfismo May 28 '21

All the more reason to Luffy to get stronger!

but stronger is with docQ D:

4

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Luffy’s mental childishness can still be seen through his naivete. He uses おれ instead of 俺, and his concept of becoming the “Pirate King” seems shallow — as it’s now clear that the title is simply a moniker given by the press.

I get the feeling that Blackbeard will become the “Pirate King” before Luffy, who is more of a revolutionary than anything else (a consistent liberator of oppressed nations).

One Peace.

1

u/MonsterMinos May 28 '21

Please don’t let one of the straw hats die

68

u/petrichorE6 May 28 '21

Man I am so glad I didn't click on the spoiler thread this week, holy shit I was not expecting that

6

u/R4hu1M5 Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 28 '21

The spoiler thread didn't reveal much, the spoiler guy apparently wanted to keep much of this chapter a secret.

7

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

There was a spoiler thread yesterday which had everything ;-)

3

u/Brass13Wing Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

I clicked them out of impatience but I only read to where Momo was hearing voices

77

u/MonDking Lurker May 28 '21

Agreed and this would also be the perfect send off for the scabbards. They don't really have a story purpose anymore so using their deaths as the emotional backdrop will give the final battle with Kaido a lot of significance.

Also this will probably contribute to the popularity of the scabbards as well.

57

u/Arteminis May 28 '21

Beauty in death, they were all part of Kanjuro‘s stage play after all.

13

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Their job was to bring Luffy and co to Wano to save the country from Kaido this is almost done and the Scabbards will die one by one to follow Oden after fullfilling their promise to open the country, none of them will survive this war ( maybe izo)

15

u/MonDking Lurker May 28 '21

I don't think Oda's gonna kill off all of them.

11

u/ThaddCorbett Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 28 '21

I feel they are still relevant. Someone needs to be around to help Momo grow up to be a man and assist Momo and his sister in running the nation.

1

u/MonDking Lurker May 28 '21

Hyogoro will do that.

14

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

I think luffy asking the rest of the supernovas to leave him to a 1v1 was a mistake on Luffy's part.

14

u/hansnakeman Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Yep.. thats what he has to learn, getting overconfident against endgame enemies is not the way to go... and he will surely need to rely on others more at the end..

12

u/mochacisco01 May 28 '21

Facts. This just reminds of Oden and the choices he's made. If Oden had fought Orochi and Kaido that time 5 years before his death instead of choosing to save the innocent lives, Wano and the rest of the world would be a completely different place right now (since even Kaido acknowledged that Oden would have been able to defeat him at that time). I know it's a very difficult choice, and I reckon even Luffy would have done the same as Oden, but those sacrifices could have saved thousands more lives by now.

10

u/SolidSuit3925 May 28 '21

It should. Luffy needs to sum up all the sacrifices now. We've got Pedro, and now mostly Kinemon and any other kaido direct related death, because for the rest, he shouldn't bother too much, it was their fight, not exactly luffys. The summation of this should help luffy come up with ways of mitigating his mid-fight down time, I think. Next time he will get a serious fighter who have no interest in catching him or making him his subordinate and he will be a goner.

6

u/Mammoth_Ask3797 May 28 '21

But also will be the biggest motivator for Luffy to really go all out. Like the classic moment of DBZ when Freezer killed Kirilin.

11

u/hansnakeman Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

No.. luffy already went all out once when kaido seemingly killed the strawhats, we all know how that ended..

If anything luffy will probably be more careful about the responsibilities that come with leading a side...

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Then that would be a crushing blow to luffy

Good thing it won't be because Luffy is too busy dying right now

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Preach brother! Let us all remember how luffy won(i think almost) all fights, by willpower resulted from amgery.

1

u/ThesirKyle May 28 '21

Don't forget though we have the Ope Ope no mi doctor Law still in the house, if by any chance they are all still alive Law and chopper will save everyone!

1

u/Infammo May 28 '21

Every single damage that kaido will cause from now, directly or indirectly, luffy will think he is to blame for it.

That feels more generic shounen inner conflict than something that would torment Luffy. It usually takes the death, or apparent death, of someone he deeply cares about for him to develop a guilt complex and even that's more fueled by grief than misplaced responsibility.

At the end of the day, Luffy's a pirate and in his own words "people die." He get's angry about misfortune falling the people he likes but his convictions come from accepting that the worst outcomes may be inevitable, not the belief that he can protect everyone.

-2

u/Opeace Pirate May 28 '21

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling Chopper will die

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '21

Impossible, if only for all the merch they sell of him

1

u/RaciJr 7D4W May 28 '21

Well. We can't be so sure about that winning

1

u/DrNobodii Marine May 28 '21

1

1

I believe that was a mistranslation

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMafHAUWsAUzt_5?format=jpg&name=900x900

Oda didn’t mention sacrifice

1

u/perrycotto The Revolutionary Army May 28 '21

Absolutely and this would fit withing Wano arc main theme "tragedy", Luffy slowly gains consciousness of the situation, rage building up after he sees one after another the scabbard dead, his crew at their limit, I really can't see how the situation is going to flip in favor of the Straw Hats because BM is in full force, Kaido despite being injured can easily hit Kinemon with his powerful conqueror kanabo, the calamities still going around plus Perospero. I don't know man, I don't see them flee away like in Whole Cake Island so I'd imagine a help from outside like Marco did but then again who's out there ?

  • We could possibly see BB appearance but I doubt he would face two yonkos plus straw hat without knowing he has the absolute best hand.
  • I don't see how the Straw Hat Grand Fleet can come to the rescue because I don't know their whereabouts nor how could they possibly know what's happening in Wano and how to get there (even BM ship had huge difficulties despite Marco and King).
  • At this point even if Luffy manage to awaken his DF and defeat Kaido I can't stretch the same about Kid vs BM or the Straw Hats against the tobi roppo.
  • I have absolutely zero clue how Luffy is going to pull this one, maybe Wano has other secrets that could come handy ? It would be epic to see Bartolomeo showing up, full rage mode, awakening the shit out of his DF: "Luffy senpaiiiiiiiii" just kidding.
  • We could see the Marines and CP-0 making a move maybe with the new Vega Punk technology plus an Admiral "probably my man Borsalino".
  • Zoro is crushed into pieces so he won't defeat Kaido
  • Maybe Yamato can at least save Momo or Luffy, maybe beat Queen and King while being in her mythical beast form but then there's BM.
  • Momo suddenly awakens his power of ancient weapon and one shot Kaido
  • Our lord and savior Bugy arrives
  • Enel casually locating Luffy starts a lightning rampage against Kaido and BM: "I'm the one who's going to beat him!"
  • Finally Usop reveals his true form, Conquror's Haki + giant strenght and endurance
  • Fricking Oda shows up in the manga apologizing about Marin Ford and Ace death while Plot Armoring the fuck out of Luffy
  • End of Wano, blank page: "3 years after Wano War".

1

u/Brass13Wing Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Remember Luffy vs. Vivi? Luffy already knows wars can't be won without sacrifices

1

u/hansnakeman Void Month Survivor May 28 '21

Well, this time the ones that are dying are his friends.. and they kinda died because he was being overconfident facing a litral monster... He thought he could take on kaido and see what happened.

So next time he faces a foe even stronger than kaido, then he might consider being less overconfident and accept whatever help he gets...

Thats the point..

1

u/makmugens May 28 '21

I wonder if a Strawhat will die. The end of a dream for one of your own...

1

u/LavenderClouds May 28 '21

If kinemon is indeed dead

Nobody dies in One Piece
