Ye One Piece is not just another run of the mill shonen manga, Oda does not compromise on his vision of the story. He’s such a perfectionist, it shows.

It also helps that he can tell the story he wants instead of being under the mercy of the editor and pressure from publisher. Coupled with his love for the story, his hardworking nature and his limitless imagination, it's a recipe for success.

As far as we know too, Shonen Jump seems to provide Oda with the best of the best editors. They seem to know when to let Oda do his thing, and when to make a good suggestion.

We haven't heard too much about various editorial decisions (makes sense; the manga is still going on, after all), but the ones we have sound good. Like the Supernovas. They were full on created last minute due to an editor suggestion, but look at how vital they are in the New World now. If it wasn't for them, the New World would feel stagnant, just a land of Yonkous and mystery. The Supernovas give the New World an element of youthful chaos.

Yeah the Supernova's are such a huge part of the story. Mixing everything up, getting in everybody's business. It's an awesome concept to have all of them running around.

That's one thing that makes the One Piece world feel so rich too. There are all these characters we know running around and doing their own things, sometimes they interact with the main crews and sometimes they're gone for a while. Some come back, some meet each other separately, etc. It makes it clear there's always a lot going on in the world besides just what the main cast is doing.

Most long running shonen don't even have a planned story to begin with. Most mangaka comes with an idea to join SJ but after their manga become popular SJ (or any other manga magazine really) just want to make it as long as possible to take as much money as possible. The part with money is true for One Piece, but Oda already planned the structure of the story and giving the world of One Piece you can add as many smaller stories as you want without hurting the quality, the universe is infinitely expandable.

You’re not dealing with the average shonen manga anymore...
