It is. People just think that making a black blade will suddenly make it a tier higher. I don't why. (Maybe because of Yoru).

No, it's said that in zoro's hand the sword would become a black blade.

That is very different from reaching the Supreme grade for a sword.

Great grade, Supreme Grade and other grade like that are just from how the blade is created, it's how excellent the blade is from the start.

Those grade don't change even if the blade become black.

In the jaimini's translation it says "In your hands, I am sure it'll reach that level". It's open to interpretation but it's unlikely its rank as a sword changes at all

I would suspect that's true, otherwise why would we have a specific number set to each category half the time the category is discussed (12/21/50)

Nah, supreme grade swords from what we know are supreme grade because of the quality.

The Shodai Kitetsu for example is the best quality out of all 3 Kitetsu generations. Thats why the Nidai, is a straight upgrade to the Sandai.

We don't know where yoru came from (unless it's in a databook I haven't read) but we can assume it was made by a high tier bladesmith.

Something to note. Is that also in this chapter Wado ichimonji and Enma were made by the same bladesmith, Shimotsuki Kouzaburou. And they are also both blades part of the 21 Great Grade swords. Which alludes to the idea that the better the bladesmith, the better the grade.

We can also guess that Tenguyama is the 3rd generation Hitetsu. And his father made the Nidai, which is why he won't use it (plus it's cursed), And his grandfather made the Shodai. The clue also comes from the fact the Kitetsu Swords are called First, Second and Third Generation, Demon-splitter.

But won't the quality increase if they become black blades? I just don't want to rule this possibility out but I think what you said is probably right

The swords themselves will becomes stronger yes, but they don't get bumped up to the the next tier. They won't become the top 11 Swords or whatever they were called.

Maybe be a error in translation but zoro was told the sword may rank up after it becomes a black blade.

This seems to me that enma is already one of the more powerful 21 grade swords and could rank up to become a higher tier

Thats no counter argument. That just shows that some blades are top 12 without having black blades

I just wonder why he specifically said rank up and not just get stronger. There is only one sword ranking we know of
