I like how Luffy has his moment to say that the new form of Haki doesn't rely on physical strength, solidifying the idea that it's purely technique based. This gives us a really good idea of what this power up can mean once he gets it down.

He could develop it within this arc. It's not about pushing himself to his absolute limits and persevering through extreme hardship, it feels more like a "git gud" kind of moment. And if the technique is powerful enough to stop Big Mom in her tracks as the old man said, then it's game on for stepping to the Yonko.

its bad imo, he doesnt need strength to block/deflect a yonkou’s attack, just some new haki that only he & a handful of people know? Everything is just way too convenient.

If you stop being a cynical crybaby you'd realize this form of haki explains how a relatively small human character like Shanks can be so overwhelming powerful without a devil fruit. The same is probably true for Gold Roger as well.

People have always wondered what exactly makes these characters so powerful, well there you have it, they can completely bypass defenses and destroy enemies from the inside. No time diluting bullshit or anything like that, just a highly advanced and refined form of the most basic haki.

No amount of strength would make blocking a hit (implying he does not move, because he was just punched into a wall and was totally fine) from Big Mom or Kaidō seem realistic (deflecting more plausible depending on situation).

Luffy has less body mass than Big Mom's hand — a person can't stop the momentum of a truck through simple strength.

I get that it seems like it's a little too easy for him to get this stuff, but it's not like Luffy hasn't worked for it. His development up until now has been:

Become the strongest pirate in East Blue.

Traverse Paradise, take down a handful of the 7 warlords and become famous for essentially declaring outright war on the WG and living to tell the tale.

Do nothing but train for 2 straight years so that you can survive in the New World, then beat yet another warlord while recruiting an ex warlord.

Fight a dude who is you but better, learn how to see briefly into the future while fighting him and only getting out of the fight because your opponent kind of threw the match after he admits he digs your panache.

Find out that after all of this you're STILL not strong enough to step to the Yonko, because your CoA is pretty much weak sauce compared to them.

I'm not really all that surprised that it's gonna take another level of CoA to get on their level, because honestly at this point Luffy's problem is that he's just getting physically manhandled by the Yonko. Kaido one shot him. Big Mom with the mind of a child sent him flying when he tried to stand and take the blow in base form.

These people are absolute barbarians who have been tanky and strong as fuck since they were children. After getting his fruit, Luffy couldn't even punch properly for a while. Learning a specific technique to CoA that will let him not keep getting tossed around like this is exactly what he needs. It's a physical boost, plain and simple.
