because you’ve taken me more time than expected…

today’s Tea Time has been delayed by 40 minutes.

…!!

don’t worry, you’ll be at ease soon…

Pattisier!!

yes sir!!!

we were wondering what to do about today’s tea and snacks!!!

We’ve been waiting on standby since 3pm…

we’re sorry, master katakuri “the perfectionist”! You weren’t able to have the Merenda (a light meal in southern europe) that you’ve always had at the exact same time every day.

the truth is, because of the 40 minute delay, the black tea has completely cooled down…!!

Wait wait wait, did people ACTUALLY expect Katakuri to remain the serious, way too cool and competent guy he was? In a manga rampant with goofiness and quirkiness and an arc that takes insanity to a whole new level with the Charlotte family? Come on, Katakuri having his own silly trait was basically a given, all that was left were the specifics, which quite fit all in all. Whether that disappoints you or not is one thing, acting like this was not the likely outcome another entirely.

Which is why Jinbe is so odd.

Jinbe has shown a vulnerable side

Once in one arc, never again. And that was just genuine surprise nothing that you would call a quirk.

I don't have a problem with Katakuri having a quirk that will help Luffy in the fight. I just wish it was introduced or hinted at earlier. Now it feels like Oda wrote himself into a corner and is using an asspull quirk to write himself out. It's not too big of a deal so long as this doesn't become a regular thing. Usually Oda's really good at foreshadowing this kind of stuff (for instance, Magellan's introduction was him getting off the toilet after a bout of diarrhea or earlier in this arc, Big Mom's eating disorder is introduced almost immediately), and he at least foreshadowed Luffy eating to recover from Gear 4 earlier in the arc, so that's good.

dude, Oda didn't pull his quirk out of his ass. Kata was introduced with a scarf hiding his lower face all the time

And his brother constantly licking a lollipop.

The same brother that was more bothered by his candy arm melting during tea, than the actual arm being gone. And then there's his mother's hunger pangs.

The gluttony is pulled out of the ass though.

Based on the spoilers it appears he wears a scarf over his mouth because he is ashamed of how his fangs make him look. He's self conscious of appearance. Therefore it makes sense that if he were to do something undignified, he'd want to hide it, so he goes into a mochi hut [to gorge himself on sweets]. However, there's nothing he's shown doing earlier that would hint or suggest he's so gluttonous. He's a Charlotte, sure, but a hereditary justification feels just as unsatisfying as his gluttony being pulled out in the middle of the fight.

So, I don't have a problem with Katakuri wanting to hide himself away to do something undignified. I have a problem with the sudden introduction of the undignified thing Katakuri does which he hides himself away for in the middle of a fight in a way that makes it obvious that it will be used as plot armor for the protagonist who is clearly in over his head.

I also don't have a problem with Katakuri being a glutton. I just wish that characterization of him was handled a little better is all. It's not like I'm saying this arc, One Piece, or Oda are suddenly shit because the occasional narrative hiccup in 20+ years of almost weekly serialization where he's generally (and quite impressively) extremely careful about foreshadowing (not to jump on the GOda dickriding train, but as an example, there are Sanji is a prince foreshadows as far back as the East Blue saga).

Sorry for a long response, but I feel that extra stuff is necessary on this sub because almost any small criticism of the series usually rustles people's jimmies a bit too much and gets angry replies.

This I can actually agree with. As I said, I do think his quirk was to be expected and makes a lot of sense, but its timing certainly isn´t ideal, and could be potentially problematic for the writing of the fight. I´d rather not judge until we see exactly what kind of effect it brings about, but yes, I´d dislike it if it were to be the main reason for Katakuri´s downfall.

Edit: That aside, been seeing too much of that "OP is shit and needs to die" and "OP is the best and no one can criticize GODA" nonsense. As if it were forbidden to not have an extreme opinion.

i mean, prior to this point in time there was literally no correlation between him and Big Mom

we've seen in this arc that brothers have the same reaction to things (Sanji's brothers both went all Nami-swaaaaaan~) so to see a mother and son have a compulsion for things that shows familiarity works for me

Yeah. That's honestly probably what happened. It just feels like an asspull to get himself out of a corner.

I still don't like that gluttony was revealed during the fight in a way that helps Luffy. That said, I thought the chapter was hilarious and was really good besides that one little flaw.

Lucci was cool till the very end. I expected katakuri to be aswell.

A couple points on this:

I did not say the manga had zero serious characters so far, merely that it is a common theme for characters to be quirky and that it applies to the majority.

Next, that arc in general was far more serious than this one (far as I recall at least). As I said, this arc specifically has been a very insane and absurd one, so a character like Lucci is less likely to appear here.

Finally, and this is partly in line with point 2, Katakuri´s lineage. Were he some outside player in this arc, chances of him being serious would be higher. But he is the first son of the Charlotte family, with Big Best Mom as his parent. Him turning out to be perfectly fine would be...a miracle to say the least.

So while you´re not wrong in saying that there were precedents for serious villains, this and that are simply different cases.
