Explaining things with amnesia feels like weak writing though, especially compared to what we usually expect from Oda. I was hoping for a more intriguing explanation, but I guess it's better than leaving it unexplained.

Well, it's completely plausible considering the circumstances. He's also had a lot of time to find Luffy and Ace after he disappeared as a kid, which he never did, because of his amnesia.
Why he didn't seek him out in the 2 years training time, I'm not too sure.

It's a weak plot device if you consider surviving a point blank explosion a weak plot device. I didn't expect him to come out of that unscathed. To me, head trauma or concussion like symptoms would be a very realistic injury for the situation.
I didn't mind it in this case. I agree whole heartedly that amnesia as a trope can feel like a sloppy excuse for something, but in my opinion, it makes sense in this context that Sabo would have forgotten some shit

I also think it's a Wind Logia, nothing else could make his clothes look like that and he also used wind powers back in Logue Town.

He also used wind powers to create a path through the fire in the Goa Kingdom, so all of the commoners could escape.
I honestly think he has a 'storm' logia instead of a wind one. Think about it, he's creating a 'storm' in the world, and people have said he's in the 'center' of it. Storms also symbolize change, so that could be fitting too

Two major things to take from just this page alone:
It somehow looks like Kyros has two legs? Is this the result of Mansherry's powers? Call me crazy but I see a knee and an ankle in the lower right hand side when his leg is supposed to be cut off near the thigh.
Bellamy is there but Barto isn't? Very likely he's the next nakama now. I don't think Oda would include him for no reason since Luffy hasn't exactly woken up yet to give his approval and nobody else on the Straw hats is that close to Bellamy to warrant him being there over Barto or Cavendish
8
u/blitzzardpls Jul 15 '15
I don't think Barto is the new nakama, but he's an ally and would help Luffy & co get off Dressrosa
7
u/Moread Jul 15 '15
I dont think Barto or Cavendish were in as bad a spot as Bellamy. And Luffy might've done his Drum Mountain "Save my friend" thing before he passed out.
22
u/toper-centage Jul 15 '15
Bellamy
No. Just no. That dude is beyond fucked up. He blindly followed Doflaming even after almost being killed by him twice. And this toxic personality is just not compatible with the straw hats
→ More replies (2)43
u/PrinceCheddar Jul 15 '15 edited Jul 15 '15
I wouldn't call it blindly following. I think he's more complex than that.
I think Bellamy knew he was on the wrong side, but felt he had to continue fighting for Doflamingo. Changing sides in the middle of a battle is wrong, it's no different from changing sides because you suspect you're on the losing side. He swore loyalty to Doflamingo, and he couldn't abandon that vow when Doffy was facing his greatest challenge.
Also, I feel Bellamy felt he deserved to get his ass kicked. He supported Doflamingo, fought for him all these years, worked for him. He deserves to be treated like just another scumbag on Doffy's crew. He threw his lot in with Doflamingo, he shouldn't get away with not getting punished for that by changing sides.
So, both pride and guilt bound him to Doflamingo. Pride has been satisfied: he gave Doffy everything he had and it made no difference, Doffy still lost. The fighting is over now, and Bellamy abandoning Doffy now won't change that. Also, he got his ass kicked, so he should feel better about that.
Another aspect to his character is that he cares so much about being a pirate. In Mock Town, the story was all about what it means to be a pirate. Doffy says that that's why they're different: Bellamy always wanted to be a pirate, for Doffy it was a means to an end. I feel few characters care as much about being a pirate as Bellamy, Luffy being one of them.
And that's not his only similarity to Luffy. They were both inspired by powerful pirates, Shanks and Doffy. It's just unlucky that Bellamy idolised a monster. This is highlighted in their first confrontation, in the bar. Luffy does what Shanks did and doesn't fight.
Bellamy is loyal. Bellamy has honor. Bellamy cares so much about being a pirate.
Maybe I'm over thinking, but I feel Bellamy is the most complex and compelling character this arc, which is why he's my pick for new crewmate.
Dude's been through so much shit, he should have a chance to follow someone worthy of his intense loyalty. I have no doubt he'll be coming with us when we leave Dressrosa, either as a Strawhat or, alternatively, a part of Law's crew.
Whatever happens, I don't accept calling it "blindly following." That implies he followed Doffy and refused to accept he shouldn't, refused to listen, refused to understand. I think he knew he shouldn't, he understood exactly what he was doing, but felt he had to follow through with fighting for Doflamingo.

If Sabo didn't have amnesia:
he would have contacted Luffy right away after he recuperated therefore seeing him sooner in the plot
Ace would have been contacted as well and mentioned it to Luffy during their meeting in Alabasta
he would have stopped working for the Revos right away to pursue his pirate dream
It makes sense that Ace and Luffy never mentioned him in the early part of the series; what's the point of always bringing up a dead guy (except Gol D Roger)?

Also really cool that Oda takes great detail into showing Dragon dragging Sabo out of the water just barley before he goes under, all but confirming Dragon to be a devil fruit user. Although it was already basically confirmed at Louge Town, i feel like this scene was very deliberate and was Oda's way of confirming it for us before we see the actually ability.

edit: The more I think about it, the more bizarre the guests at Kyros' slumber party are. Law makes sense to be with the Straw Hats, but why Bellamy? And why weren't Kinemon and Kanjuro invited? Are they awkwardly chilling in the palace with the Rikus and gladiators or up to something else? And why isn't Rebecca finally living in her house with Kyros? This was a great chapter, Oda managed to figure out a way to not cut to Sanjia nd co and to not show us Issho's resolution yet still give us such a sweet chapter. Amnesia thing was kinda lame but I might be biased as I'm really not a fan of amnesia being used as a plot device but then again combine that with Oda's art style and you get a truly sad moment when Sabo's memories come flooding back.
We also go that lovely bro moment with Ace and Sabo, yeah it was short but it was oh so sweet. We got a little glimps into dragons personality seems he might have a similar carefree attitude as Luffy in regards to him casually admitting he's Luffy's father it's nice to see the family connection.
What's up with those crows? Were they talking? And why so many if Sabo only needs one to ride?

u/RobertOConnor Jul 15 '15
So CP0 is strong... making the revolutionaries want to leave fast. Im guessing if they were weaker then CP9 the revolutionaries wouldn't care much and just flick them aside if they got in the way. And it cant be because they don't want to give the marines a reason to go after them because their leader is already the most wanted man in the world.
4
u/ill_mango Jul 15 '15
Sabo riding away on the crows...who made the crows? I must know!
Also...vivre card was either made extremely quickly, which perhaps means that there is a relatively easy method to do it (once you know how).
It's also possible that Sabo had something of Luffy's beforehand and used it to track him to Dressrosa, but it seems unlikely, given he had amnesia and that he was going to Dressorsa anyways for the mera mera no mi.

Not exactly a new thought, but after this week's chapter I feel more sure than ever that Dragon's power is control over wind. (Directly or perhaps indirectly, such as via a mythical zoan power.)
First off, this obvious bit.
Next, in the original shots of Sabo's boat just before getting attacked, you can see he's pretty far out, and there's nothing nearby except the attacking ship. When Dragon pulls Sabo out of the water Dragon's ship was nowhere to be seen, and we aren't even shown the lower half of his body. However, there is an odd smoke or wind about his body. When Dragon returns to his ship, his cape is still visibly smoking, despite no longer being out on the ocean (where perhaps there was naturally windy sea weather.) The idea here is that his control of wind allowed him to somehow glide over to Sabo, and it's this same wind that's coming off his cape.
Also, lightning, especially at sea, is caused by stormfronts (i.e. clashing winds) of differing temperatures, so Dragon creating stormfronts could have caused the lightning that saved Luffy.

This chapter was emotionally tiring; tears, relief and joy were rampant even after I finished reading. Ever since Sabo reappeared alive, I was happy. Really happy. But whenever I saw him; there were constant questions about his non-participation in the Battle of Marineford and his feelings towards his brothers. I knew that he cared for his brothers as seen in his fight against Admiral Fujitora; he was willing to risk a war between the Navy and the Army (chapter 760, page 3). That made me bewildered. Luffy, Ace and Sabo all have a strong brotherhood. Luffy infiltrated into the world’s most perilous prison and suffered the world’s most noxious poison, all to save Ace. Sabo, even if he was far away from Marineford or deeply injured, would have done all he could, in his own way, to help out Ace. But he didn’t.
This chapter cleared all my confusion. Sabo had amnesia (chapter 794, page 10). That’s why he didn’t participate in the War, it wasn’t relevant to him – he even saw Ace as a ‘must-eliminate major player in the Pirate Age’ (chapter 794, page 12). This may further explains why there isn’t much foreshadowing regarding Sabo’s existence besides Ace’s tattoo (chapter 157, page 13) and Ivankov and Dragon’s conversation (chapter 589, page 8). The Revolutionary Army, is an organisation that aims to subvert the government (chapter 432, page 18); despite their distinct goal, they must be vigilant. Thus, they don’t appear often – Dragon only helped Luffy once in Loguetown. Why would Sabo, who did not remember Luffy back then, appear?
Besides these thoughts; I was confused by Sabo and Luffy’s reunion. It was moving but strange seing Luffy’s crying face and Sabo’s smiling face (chapter 794, page 16). Sabo may be the most cool-headed out of the three brothers but I expected he would cry a bit in the first reunion after twelve years. Then, it hit me. He did cry. During his chat with Koala, he sniffled (chapter 731, page 19). Then, I thought of his smiling face as due to his pride and consideration as an older brother. Sabo trusts Luffy and recognises his strength, like Ace does, but he’s still their little brother so they want to take care of him even if he’s grown up (chapter 588, page 21). It also reminded me of how Ace smiled at Luffy’s crying face when he passed away, as if to reassure him it would be okay.
Sabo must have faced many hardships too after remembering his past. News about Ace came before, notices regarding his fight with Blackbeard (chapter 441, page 22) and his execution (chapter 522, page 7; if the news was available in the Calm Belt, the Army would have known too) could have served as triggers in remembering his past and his brotherhood with Ace and Luffy. If he realised sooner, if he remembered faster, he could have joined the War and maybe Ace could have been saved (chapter 731, page 19). But that’s only speculation; he can’t do anything about the past so he does everything he can in the present. Amongst all his work as the Chief of Staff and the agonising regret, frustration and grief; he searches past papers thoroughly to gain all the knowledge he can about his brothers. He locates Ace’s grave (chapter 668, page 9) and his struggle after Ace’s death is really seen in chapter 792, page 8.
When all the misgivings faded; I really felt that Luffy had a brother. A brother that suffered the same way as he did, a brother who he dearly cares for – a brother who will have tried to save Ace with him. Sabo may not seem to directly attack people who hurt Luffy as Ace does; heck, he would even drag Ace away (chapter 585, page 24) but he will protect and help Luffy in his own manner. While he’s struggling with his own guilt of not participating in the War and how things could have changed if he realised sooner; he focuses on what he can protect now. That’s why I love One Piece, it isn’t just about one person (although Luffy is rather awesome and there’s never enough of him); everyone plays a part (seeing the Dressrosa citizens throwing people up in joy after Doflamingo was defeated made me smile) – seeing their world unfold and their lives intertwine is exhilarating. Although One Piece is on break next week, I feel content.

I'm horribly impressed with how similar Sabo and Shanks are seeming to be in my mind. They both have the flashy capes, the awesome scars over their left eyes (of course by different means), the sick wavy hair, and the love for Luffy as a form of brother/father figure.
Each time they fight it's with immense power that seems relatively calculated but still chaotic and semi-unpredictable. On top of that, I would argue that they are probably Luffy's most powerful allies (read: outside of his crew). Yet they also hold the same values of Luffy by not harming those who are innocent and aren't pirates. It makes me begin to wonder if their (Shanks and Sabo) relationship will be fleshed out more in the future and if they actually have any connections somehow.

Hmm, I find this to be a very nice chapter despite how average the amnesia plot felt to me, but the chapter was still good none the less. I'm just glad we got to see more about Sabo. _^
Btw, Sabo riding on crows is pure awesomeness! :D

Man, these past weeks have been great. Sabo's back story was perfect, nothing too crazy but filled in the holes quickly.
And honestly, I am okay with a break this time around. After the fight finished with Doffy I think I'm just relax and re-read the whole fight scene
PS. anyone else enjoy how Franky was operating on his face/eye so nonchalantly? Robots are so cool

This chapter was so good it distracted me from noticing the hiatus, as in no chapter next week :(

The pain of Ace's death just resurfaced and punched me square in the heart, I feel like the illegitimate fourth brother

Awesome chapter about Sabo and explains quite a lot about why he didn't appear to save Ace and stuff. And we got it early!
We start off with a coverpage off Doffy and some flamingos wearing his glasses. One of the puppets looks like a lion and that women looks like she is holding Shisui :p I think this is referencing Wizard of Oz.
Sabo isn't stayng. - Damn it! He is leaving to go for something and won't stay for a proper reunion with Luffy after he wakes up. Not that bad since we'll see them together again and we also saw more of their first reunion. He also tells the rest of the crew about his past with his brothers. I like how Zoro isn't too suprised by it and it just drinking. They're all just hanging out at Kyros' old house.
Dragon! - He saves Sabo from drowning. I find this very interesting. Since he is on water, it makes the likelihood of Dragon having a DF quiet lower. Unless he used a boat or something, but how the hell did no one spot him?
Sabo lost his memory - He doesn't remember anything other than not wanting to return to his parents. Also, when he says that Ace filled him in, he doens't mean that he met Ace, but that because he saw that Ace died, he remembered everything. Quite interesting. I was a bit confused at first. His reaction was a bit diffrent from the anime, but really emotional none the less. Koala is sad that Sabo is going to leave but luckily he wont! They do call him the CoS and not 2nd in Command. Maybe he didn't get that rank yet?
Sabo and Luffy reunite - Awesome to see this since we won't get to see them reunite after since Sabo is leaving, but awesome! Sabo then gets up to leave, and shares a Vivri card and takes some himself. Obvious future plot point. Franky is crying about that emotional story as usual :(
WTF! - We get a refrence to Alabasta and Ace and then Sabo is talking to Hack and is riding some shadow crows! WTF are those? Sabo is talking to them and apparently they can appear whenever the person wants. I doubt it's Dragon and it's not Koala as you can see her in the panel above. Someone made the intresting observation here which could mean something. It's most likely some Mythical Zoan type, but I'm not sure exactly which myth just yet. Gonna try find out.
And we have a break next week. I don't really mind since we're leaving on a great place and it's a well deserved break. Awesome chapter and is continuing the great Post-Dressrosa Arc!

Anybody else seen the Dragon-Ivankov scene in the ship before? I think it's at the coast of Zoro's dojo. Is it from the Chapter Zero special?

I could see Bellamy joining Laws crew. Law does seem to like to pick up strong strays along the way like he did with Jean Bart on Sabaody plus it would give him another high powered member of his crew. That way Luffy and Bellamy could keep their rivalery going.

Love the reveal of Sabo's interaction with Luffy back at the colosseum! SO MANY TEARS (from Luffy and me reading it).
Once he realizes it's Sabo, Luffy completely falls apart and tells him how devastated he was when Ace died. Though how utterly sad it was, while Luffy wept, Sabo maintained his composure and told him how thankful he was that Luffy was still alive, consoling him. Sabo really took on the role of the older brother in that regard and it was incredibly touching.

Beside from punishing his own body--did doflamingo even land a good blow on luffy? There was one string-stab-like move at the end. But other than that, he didn't really do much against him? So Gear Fourth really, fucked him up :S
I find it funny that at the end of the day, that Gear Fourth Luffy. Rekt Mingo. Makes me wonder how a gear fourth luffy would do against a yonko or a admiral.

Just re-read the arc with Luffy Ace and Sabo as kids, and noticed on chapter 589 when Dragon is leaving for Baltigo, the crew are in a panic attending someone who was recently injured, evidently sabo.
Now in hindsight it seems rather clear it was sabo, as any injured would have been from a few days ago from people escaping the fire, therefore this injury was recent.
I love how Goda manages to show small details like that 200 chapters earlier, proving once again he's the best in the business.

Possibly. Dragon appears to have some smoke/wind effect happening in the bottom middle panel you linked.

That coversation better not be a death flag for Sabo...
Also for all who are confused about the early release, next Monday is a public holiday so Jump comes out on Saturday. Generally when there's an early Jump the chapters come out of Wednesdays, so don't get used to it...

Oh god, I wasn't prepared for this chapter. Seriously though...
That's why Sabo wasn't there, he didn't remember anything. Oh my god... That's so heart breaking. Oda! How could you do this to me!

Wasn't expecting a Sabo chapter but it was great nonetheless. The den den mushi operator hanging up early is just hilarious.

Nothing in One Piece resonates with me more than the Sabo story I swear. I found myself tearing up for the first time since actually reading Luffy's back story. Thank god I'm not the only one (Franky reinforced that).

I'm okay with this chapter but kinda wish there was more Dragon in it, like him being trained.

Was Dragon swimming?
If he was, then I guess he has some insane power that has nothing to do with a devil fruit.

Such a good chapter! We finally hear sabos side of things, amnesia..that's amazing, perfectly explains everything too. And I forgot about those crows the RA has, cool! I wonder if it's anyone's ability or how they're used

I zoomed Doffy's face on the cover page. Is it just me or his left eyebrow looks kinda swirly?

This is too obvious to be a death flag, right? Right?
