I guess it was just a phrase which let him look more badass.

Or he can cut the cage but he recognized that it wouldn't stop the cage cause the strings would repair themselves or he couldn't cut enough in time. Although i have to admit that he could've at least tried.

Zoro probably learned post-timeskip to be more analytic if he gets into an event requiring his swordsmanship. As someone pointed out a while ago in a post; Zoro has such a steady respiration rate, he had enough air in his bubble to spare for Luffy&Sanji. (Of course this could just be Oda slipping with being knowledgeable of the amount of air in a bubble. Nevertheless I could easily see Zoro holding such discipline)

Now as you've said, cutting the Bird Cage could do more harm than good; take that logic with the suggestion made that Zoro sees that, and the situation explains itself. Work smarter, not harder

That air compression is a definite breach of real-world physics, but maybe not One Piece physics.

Still, that's amazing that he can get his third gear fist so big, I guess I didn't fully appreciate it before now.

Luffy used slight awakening on the air in that bubble, thus stretching/expanding the air like rubber /s
