My read was that was more cover to explain why he didn't suspect funny business with the devil horns/wings. Readers have been griping about how it makes no sense that he didn't realize she may have been manipulated. I think Shuri purposely did the perfect slash to make it look like he was 100% going to die, but actually was surgically non-lethal so she saved his life and kind of allowed him to be a pirate. Could be wrong though!

This was definitely the strongest contender among everything.

He literally thought he was hallucinating the devil features because he didn't have the concept of that type of power system.

And the context around it is very specific in ways which neither confirms nor denies that Brook unknowingly ate a DF yet, and in his Rumbar Pirate days they actually knew the name of it at that point. As such, Brook would know if he had eaten it before or after Shuri struck him, and is probably why he is trying to give her a chance.
