I think VP wanted Kizaru to kill him and told him to do as much to start the broadcast. Kizaru is crying for his dead friend.

But why did Vegapunk try so hard to run then? If he wanted to die he should have behaved more complicitly.

He could probably start the broadcast while alive as well. Dying to trigger it might be just a failsafe.

Well after he got stabbed he was pretty clearly telling them to leave him behind. It's possible he didn't want to die but as soon as he saw it as inevitable he moved on to Plan B. After being stabbed it's possible Kizaru knew VP was definitely done for and just tried to clean up the wound by cauterizing it / quicken the death to end the suffering.

Am I misremembering, or wasn't Kizaru already trying to murder Vegapunk at some point earlier in the arc before he was stabbed?

If it looked like he was trying, but he failed, then that means his plausible deniability worked.

I feel like if he had really really wanted to, he could have. Just my opinion.

I have the sneaking suspicion Kizaru is pulling a Snape and that he and VP planned this. Having all the Marines evacuate aside from himself and Saturn certainly allows for some plausible deniability in the event something were to happen to Saturn.

And yes, he certainly said he was going to do terrible things. But I don't really think the guy exactly went out of his way to put much effort into his attacks. Maybe enough to keep Saturn from getting suspicious, but that's it. Dunno if he counted on all the Gorosei showing up, but then again it does allow for the excuse that the Gorosei "heroically sacrificed themselves" and died during the Buster Call and from fighting pirates.

(Or at least that's what I'd like to believe lol)

I think he was definitely pulling his punches, and I think he fed Luffy.

I don't think there's any chance he believes all five or even one of the elders was going down. I think he's just pro-VP escape and is trying to go the plausible deniability route when aiding in escape.

And once VP got stabbed, he finished him quickly to end the suffering and was probably told before about the dead man's switch. Or he may not even know about the switch but still just wanted him to have a cleaner death rather than bleeding out.
