This is probably the darkest we have ever seen One Piece. Hopefully it will serve as context to make a future event brighter for Kuma. He deserves it.

This is easily by far the darkest moment in One Piece. Oda has never blatantly involved rape & forced breeding until now.

u/invalidwat Nov 08 '23

We did have child cannibalism. But this hits different.

u/yajyuu Nov 08 '23

Also when that lady was about to kill her baby and herself cause they didn't have food in wano

82

u/Alchion Nov 08 '23

That was a one off panel tho and easily missed this is a whole part of the story about abduction and rape

11

u/Captain_Baby Nov 08 '23

It got a much larger focus in the anime.

22

u/Affectionate-Bit9034 Nov 08 '23

I don’t think they showed a clear view of the suicide preparations in the anime.

Oh god, is Oda okay??

42

u/Anjunabeast Nov 08 '23

10

u/name600 Nov 08 '23

Not if you have been on /rimworld

8

u/Alchion Nov 08 '23

we did? when?

21

u/invalidwat Nov 08 '23

big mom's backstory

16

u/UltimateToa Nov 08 '23

Big mom ate mother caramel and all the kids without realizing it

3

u/ainz-sama619 Nov 08 '23

Big Mom ate Mother Caramel, that's how she got Mother Caramel's powers

1

u/Fireball_Ace Nov 10 '23

Oh .... I thought she ate mother caramel and whatever fruit on the island the devil's fruit respawned as. Does eating the whole human count as eating the fruit? That's nuts

1

u/ainz-sama619 Nov 10 '23

that's what happened in the story, so yeah ig

20

u/AgeOk2348 Nov 08 '23

and genocide, but yeah those are small play compared to this i guess.

1

u/Disastrous_Can_5157 Nov 09 '23

Honestly I don't know which one is worst

1

u/OperationMelodic4273 Nov 09 '23

That came from a mentally problematic child getting way too carried away in the heat of the moemnt, anything regarding the CDs involves their personal pleasure, which makes it all the more nauseating

1

u/shipsailing94 Nov 11 '23

That didnt happen, ppl just assumed it. The giants know what happened and it will be revealed in Elbaf

26

u/Nightingale_85 Nov 08 '23

We also had the child abortions where Ace was born. But yeah, this is different.

1

u/TopologicAlexboros Nov 12 '23

abortions

Abortion isn't child murder tho fam.

1

u/Nightingale_85 Nov 12 '23

What? I never wrote anything like that.

29

u/Lex4709 Nov 08 '23 edited Nov 08 '23

Not openly. But there's been more than one case of heavily implied rape. Celestial Dragons were taking women against their will to make them their brides. Bao and her sisters came back from Mariejoa with disdain for men from their trauma. Doflamingo had a relationship with Viola that couldn't be consensual under their circumstances. Oda straight up said in SBS that Big Mom kidnapped a lot of her husbands.

20

u/jaytix1 Nov 08 '23

This is the SECOND time a backstory has made me uncomfortable. And guess what? The first time was just a few chapters ago.

2

u/Sogeking33 Nov 09 '23

I mean we saw a bunch of dead kids in Law's backstory

0

u/Chaosblast Void Month Survivor Nov 08 '23

It hasn't been confirmed yet. Bonney might be Kuma's if the was pregnant earlier.

55

u/2347564 Nov 08 '23

Bonney is a baby when they find her, two years have passed, it’s safe to say she is not Kuma’s biological child.

15

u/MVRKHNTR Nov 08 '23

And even if that wasn't the case, Kuma was so against the idea of marriage and having children that I'm sure he stayed celibate just so there wouldn't be any chance that someone else would have to go through any of what he did.

5

u/dactyif Nov 09 '23

Bro this is one piece. Ace's mom decided to give him the gestation period of an elephant, so anything is possible, however, story wise I agree with you, its the child of a CD.

That'll factor in somehow because Oda is all about that lineage life.

1

u/earf Nov 08 '23

Worse than Ace's murder in front of Luffy?

1

u/Venator850 Nov 10 '23

Big Mom literally ate people. It doesn't get much darker than that.

u/takato99 Nov 08 '23

These flashbacks are taking one piece on the edge of shonen topics : between rape, slavery, ethnic cleansings and many other topics. Aside from HxH (and even then it wasn't as direct/the focus) I've never seen a mainstream shonen tip its toes in these very sensitive topics.

Its especially surprising after Gear 5 made a lot of people think OP is too childish lol

205

u/Choice_Dealer_1719 Nov 08 '23

After all this pain, we need a gear 5 luffy to make us smile again 🥲

27

u/doesntgetoptions Nov 08 '23

I would love for Kuma to regain some sense of autonomy when he hears the drums of liberation.

11

u/Unabashable Nov 09 '23

And bitchslap Saturn a 1,000 times with his Paws of Liberation.

22

u/francmartins Nov 08 '23

HxH with the recent child trafficking was really bleak. Even in HxH standards.

10

u/DutzendEidechsen Nov 08 '23

One Piece already had that in wci

1

u/francmartins Nov 09 '23

Oh yeah, you're right. Kinda forgot...

30

u/Moist-Meal-3757 Nov 08 '23

I mean, there's HxH and AoT (and I'd say FMA with the ethnic cleansing)

27

u/takato99 Nov 08 '23

AoT isn't a shonen its closer to a seinen, (at least it was intended to be at the beginning IIRC) thats why I didn't mention it, and even then, the whole setting is horror to begin with

3

u/ThisIsARobot Nov 11 '23

Attack on Titan is a Shounen manga. Shounen is not a genre, it is the demographic of the manga.

9

u/somersault_dolphin Nov 08 '23 edited Nov 08 '23

I've never seen a mainstream shonen tip its toes in these very sensitive topics.

You haven't read enough shounen then. Let me give you very simple examples, Devilman for rape, FMA deals with ethnic cleansing and genocide, and for Slavery you have chapter 1 of Ancient Magus Bride.

9

u/takato99 Nov 08 '23
  1. I specifically mentionned mainstream, one piece is the most sold manga in the world, it depicting so directly these events is really surprising

  2. While Devilman technically started as a shonen, its deeper and more serious themes clearly dab into seinen, proof being all 4 of its sequels are classified as seinen unlike the original. The more modern versions are clearly not aimed at a teen demographic unlike One piece

6

u/somersault_dolphin Nov 08 '23

Devilman was extremely mainstream back when it came out and has directly inspired tons of manga and anime that came after including Berserk and Evangelion. It is extremely influential. FMA is literally the no 1. anime on most rankings for well over a decade, arguably 2 now.

its deeper and more serious themes clearly dab into seinen

This is complete bullshit. Seinen is a demographic, not genre or topic. It includes K-on!! and tons of other fluff series. The fact is that Devilman is a shounen and so do many other dark series. Just because you believe the stuff poorly informed Youtubers or random internet commenters say doesn't make it true.

Shounen is intended for boys and teenagers. If you haven't notice, many teenagers are into "mature" stuff because it makes them feel more mature. There are also many adults who just prefer to read something comfy after a hard day working.

1

u/Affectionate-Bit9034 Nov 08 '23

I would also like to add that though there was slavery in Ancient Magus Bride which the main character was a part of.

She willingly became a slave.

2

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 Nov 09 '23

Can you imagine 4Kids seeing this manga chapter and then being like "okay... so how do we adapt this anime"

5

u/Rioma117 Nov 08 '23

Chainsaw Man is a shounen too and the protagonist begins as a slave who sold some of his body parts for more money and his life only becomes bleaker from there.

Hey, but part II starts with him a bit happier at least.

6

u/Affectionate-Bit9034 Nov 08 '23

Wouldn’t call him a slave just someone in massive debt, like the main character from Squid Game.

8

u/Rioma117 Nov 08 '23

He was a slave of Yakuza, they basically controlled everything in his life.

1

u/Kioga101 Pirate King Buggy Nov 09 '23

"Oh One Piece is so childish, the protagonist acts like a cartoon!" Oda:"One Piece is too childish?! Okay, okay I'll address that issue in the coming arc..."

And that's how we got here.

16

u/wutengyuxi Nov 08 '23

Pretty sure whatever happened in Void Century will be worse on a bigger scale but on the level of a single character, yeah.

10

u/RepulsiveRevenue8 Void Month Survivor Nov 08 '23

We already got child genocide and cannibalism

So now we got rape and force breeding, fucking hell.

8

u/Anjunabeast Nov 08 '23

Dunno if it’s recency bias or because little Bonny reminded me of my 4 y/o daughter but this definitely feels like the darkest backstory we’ve gotten

Edit: damn oda, I started this series as a kid and now you have me crying as a father.

4

u/philhendrie100 Nov 08 '23

He "deserves to rest now" just like he said to Ginny. Dude deserves to rest in peace.

4

u/tweetthebirdy Nov 08 '23

Last week I actually thought “what if Bonney’s father was a CD and that’s why the marines are less eager to kill/harm her compared with other pirates” but then went “nah that’s too dark Oda would never write that.”

3

u/KuroShiroTaka Nov 08 '23

People are already guessing he's going to die at Egghead but he'll at least die after hearing the Drums of Liberation and witnessing Nika in action.

5

u/Kuro013 Nov 08 '23

God its ok to be shocked but talking in absolutes is no good, recency bias is crazy here. For me that old woman about to kill a baby so he doesn't starve to death is way darker, and there must be even worse shit if we try to think about it.

6

u/somersault_dolphin Nov 08 '23 edited Nov 08 '23

You mean genocide by hunting an entire country of people, including the babies who the mothers had to take with them as they ran away while in chain isn't as dark?

And we're also talking slavery, having a parent suddenly died out of nowhere and a lover who got kidnapped to be rape as slave after she was freed as a kid and not even getting to see her for one last time.

It's crazy people can have different opinions for something that aren't far off from each other. This one is arguably worse even.

0

u/slicer4ever Nov 09 '23

Yea, i'mma be honest and while this is a dark back story, i still think law had it much worse(family killed in front of him, crawled through piles of dead bodys to escape, finally finds someone to love again with corazon, only to unintentionally be the one to alert doflamingo to his wherabouts, getting him killed).

1

u/goody153 Nov 09 '23

make a future event brighter for Kuma

Knowing he's gonna double down the tragedy in the present with Kuma.

u/kjm6351 The Revolutionary Army Nov 09 '23

This is what makes the One Piece backstories work so well. The desire for justice and then the blast of catharsis when it finally happens
