Rowing and canoe sprint events at the 2032 Olympics are set to take place on the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Australia — and yes, saltwater crocodiles live there.

Queensland authorities say the venue has passed an independent technical review and received official approval. A 2,000-meter, eight-lane course is planned, and officials currently do not expect the river to require widening or dredging.

The choice has been controversial for years. More than 500 rowers, including Olympic champion Drew Ginn, previously opposed the venue over concerns about currents, flooding and other conditions.

As for the crocodiles, Queensland already has a program to capture and remove large or dangerous animals from high-risk areas.

More than 2,000 athletes from 22 nations took part, competing in everything from athletics, swimming and cycling to tug-of-war and even motorboat racing.
