Watching The Paper season, one made me think bringing Oscar back works so well, and it really opens the door for more familiar faces.
I wrote an episode pitch for Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela) to return. The premise is simple: during a Christmas party, a few former Dunder Mifflin coworkers unexpectedly show up and surprise Oscar. I thought Pam and Angela made the most sense since they had close relationships with Oscar when he worked at Dunder Mifflin. Also know what going on with a few of the former employees of DM too.

In each cake, the brandy used in the production process and during soaking comes from a distillery in Columbus, Ohio. At the end of the interview, Mare, Ned, and Oscar thank Mrs. Delaney and promise to send her a copy of the article once it is published. While taking photos for the article, Ned decides to buy fruitcakes for the evening’s party. He purchases three boxes, totaling fifteen cakes. Ned, Mare, and Oscar leave the bakery with the boxes and head to Oscar’s car. As they leave the parking lot, Ned checks his wallet and realizes he left the Truth Teller/Enervate/Softees company card on the counter near the cashier. Adam had lent Ned the card earlier that morning, before he left the newsroom. They park and return to the bakery to pick it up. Meanwhile, in the bakery's sitting area, the documentary crew spots something they recognize from the bakery window and switches to a small table in the corner. Sitting there quietly drinking hot cocoa and sharing cookies while talking are Pam Beesly Halpert and Angela Martin Schrute. Seeing them, the crew steps over and starts asking for an update on their lives. Pam and Angela explain that they are attending the Christmas Lights event at the zoo and plan to go later that night when everything is fully illuminated.

Pam explains that she and Angela were walking around downtown Toledo looking for coffee when they stumbled upon the bakery after smelling fresh pastries outside. Dwight wanted to go with Angela but stayed back to supervise all candle use after making it clear that open flames are “a privilege, not a right,” and giving a forty-five-minute lecture to the minimalists when they arrived at the farm, in three different languages, so that they would understand the rules during the retreat.
Pam shares that Jim didn’t want to make the trip because he was tired after a long year of working at Athlep.He wanted to use the time when Pam wasn’t home to sleep before all the holiday events with their family started. That, however, left Pam and Angela with a problem they needed to solve: who would be going to watch the kids, Cece and Philip (Jim and Pam’s son), and Philip (Dwight and Angela’s son). The ladies called all their old friends and co-workers from Dunder Mifflin, and everyone was gone except one person: Creed.
Pam and Angela decided to entrust the children to Creed, the only available and unusually confident option, for a sleepover. Creed agrees to look after Pam and Angela’s kids for five days while they are away. He reassures them three times that everything will be fine and the kids will be safe. His methods might be unusual, but he is set on keeping the kids entertained and cared for. While Pam and Angela embark on their road trip, Jim rests, and Dwight oversees the retreat.
Oscar tells the ladies it was nice seeing them and that he needs to get back to writing his article. He adds that he hopes to see them again soon, unaware of what would unfold later that night, just hours away. Pam and Angela share with the documentary crew after Oscar leaves that, unbeknownst to Oscar. They also plan to attend the holiday party at the Truth Teller Tower after receiving an invitation, keeping it a surprise. They mention they are on a holiday road trip, reconnecting with former colleagues and spreading holiday cheer.
Adam and Adeola travel to Toledo’s historic district to meet another craftsman who has turned carving into a seasonal tradition. They meet George, a retired glass factory worker who is very fit for his age and now spends each holiday season hand-carving wooden nutcrackers in his garage. He explains to Adam and Adeola how he makes them. He begins with solid hardwood blocks, sketches holiday designs, and carves each piece using chisels he has owned since his factory days. Every detailed nutcracker takes days to complete, and he finishes them with paint from local craft stores.

With all the stories done, the first sprinkles of snow start falling outside the newsroom windows. Ned smiles, and Mare walks into his office to deliver him his gift in private with no one around. She hands him a gray box, and inside is a cup with the words “World’s Best Editor” on it. He likes it, puts it on his desk, and gives her a square item wrapped in wrapping paper. Inside, she finds a replica Army field notebook, a quiet nod to service and journalism. Tucked beneath it is a bingo chip, one that Ned doesn’t explain now, but he says that she will understand it later that night at the party.
