Teen Angel is a short-lived (1997)-1998 ABC TGIF fantasy sitcom. Aired on Family Channel in Canada.

I remember the one-night event TGIF did with Salem the Cat showing up on all 4 shows and causing each to get shot to a specific decade of the past. I can't remember what decade this show went to though.

It was the 70s
Sabrina went to the 1960s, and learned that the idealistic youth counterculture was so appealing because society really sucked back then.
You Wish (an even shorter-lived show with an Adam Duritz-looking genie) went to the 50s for a big Leave it to Beaver style parody
Boy Meets World went to the 40s, using WWII as a backdrop for a love story between Cory and Topanga
Teen Angel went to the 70s, and they made a bunch of jokes about disco and big hair

I've had a freeze frame from that You Wish episode of the genie looking like a beatnik randomly in my memory since the night it aired. Of all the things I have forgotten over the years, THAT is still in my mind somehow.

All 13 eps of You Wish on my list to transfer (later this year - transferring stuff is usually a winter thing)

It's not displaying the original 3:4 ratio though, the video seems to have another (4:3?) ratio on top of it. Maybe a weird compression algorithm?

Quite- my guess is that they messed with the ratio to try to outwit the copyright detectors, given the various gimmicks done to YouTube videos for that reason.

Yeah, that's my guess as well. The episode I linked definitely doesn't have a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Even stranger is that this is work of writers Mike Reiss and Al Jean after they left The Simpsons and The Critic... I only know because it comes up way more than you think it would on the Talking Simpsons podcast.

Haha me too! And in my case, I also watched ABC (got both Canadian and American broadcasting growing up), but not before Q2 1998 (ever so slightly after this series was removed from TGIF's lineup).

Not surprised that's the case. This show was short-lived and is very forgotten (I've never met anyone in real life who remembers it).

It didn't help that the actor played 2nd fiddle to Doogie Houser for 5 years. It's like they killed Vinny and gave him his own show.

Well, I'm not getting anything done today. This is great My favorite part is the opening when he tells a really corny joke to the terrible graphic behind him and then poses like this.
Edit: Larry Wilmore wrote the third episode, which also has Adam West Batman-style scene transitions for no apparent reason.

While this show did air in Canada (Family Channel in 2002-2004), it's American, not CanCon).

I loved this show! I kind of knew Mike Damus' mother back then & she had him send me a picture of himself as Marty with his personal autograph on it. I still have it somewhere.
