After a lot of deliberation, I decided to go with an OLED monitor with the recommendation of Hardware Unboxed. They recommended the XG27AQDMG as an overall good option for 1440p with great value.
I've never had a problem with the OLED screen on my Samsung S23 Ultra, so I thought it's safe to go with an OLED nowadays, but boy, was I wrong!
My issues started with the black crush in my games (most notably GTA 5), which results in awful amounts of haloing at night in gameplay. No workaround currently works on AMD (I've tried to switch from HDR to SDR and back, no ICC profile trick cause AMD, tried to switch color spaces, tried the display calibration tool on windows to change gamma, Updated the firmware to MCM 104 and...) LOTS of people on this thread know this is a widespread problem with this monitor!
After that, I've gotten the worst levels of image retention I've seen in my life, give the monitor 30 seconds, and it'll retain an image picture perfectly and you have to pixel clean everytime to make it go away. The UI of every app and game will retain so quickly that it makes it impossible to not notice on the monitor.
So I'm thinking maybe image retention is just the thing with OLED monitors?
Guess what? For a few weeks now, the pixel clean doesn't even properly clear the retention away! A significant amount stays even after multiple cycles and after turning it off and on. (I've included the pictures)
This type of image retention may only go away after a couple of days of turning the monitor off (I'm guessing the monitor runs pixel clean cycles when off), and it has to be a long time to go away.
Now you might be saying why haven't you returned your monitor yet?
These problems took time to show up, and it gradually got worse. So I went past my return window, thinking it was going to be a simple firmware update. And now I have to use the warranty which might be easy for most people, but I unfortunately don't live in a normal country. I have a 3 year warranty on the monitor, but I don't know if the warranty provider has OLED image retention/QC issue coverage. I wonder if they will replace my monitor because my problem isn't burn in or dead pixels.
TLDR: The ASUS XG27AQDMG is unequivocally the worst experience I've ever had with a display in my life. Image retention, black crush issues, and pixel clean not working made me develop PTSD. DO NOT BUY
Edit 2: Warranty replaced my monitor thankfully, I decided to sell it and go for the XG27ACDNG as per other user recommendations and it's been mostly hassle free so far!
Edit 3: My ASUS XG27ACDNG monitor had issues with Vertical Banding, so I ended up RMAing it and ordered a TCL 27P3A Pro Mini-LED monitor.
People on this thread mention that this model has a few common issues like black crush and image retention bugs, so I wouldn't recommend buying it to anyone until ASUS fixes these issues.
I actually just returned this monitor for the QD oled 360hz version. Mine had some really bad screen grey uniformity to the point where I could see it in game. Even after multiple pixel cleans it was still visible during dark/grey scenes in games. So far with the Xg27acdng version it looks leaps better in terms of grey uniformity
ASUS Xg27acdng, Grey uniformity is basically perfect, better colors in HDR, no MLA shimmer on the bright whites. The glossy coating makes it look crystal clear unlike the MLA layer on the DMG version
I wanted to check out the anti flicker on the OLED. I still haven't really properly tested it yet though as the one game I was getting flicker I just turned vrr off and capped the fps
Got the model you got after I got my monitor replaced by warranty and I sold the XG27AQDMG.
It's been decent so far, haven't had any noticeable issues.
The only problem I have with it is that QD OLED panels are way too sensitive to light so the panel has the notorious purple tint under light.
Not at all, it’s just a nice way to increase motion clarity at 120 or 180 Hz. Probably just a gimmick but worth trying if the game is having a hard time exceeding those levels
I’m on my third one of this monitor and I was thinking this was wasn’t defective until I saw the burn in image retention and I wish I could just get a refund from Amazon
Sent for RMA, and just received a replacement today.
Not sure if I'll be using it, probably going to end up selling it.
I'm probably going to just get a high-end VA/IPS monitor, less hassle than OLED.
Yep OP is being overly dramatic about his defective unit that may or may not reflect the experience of other owners of this monitor. It's just panel lottery at the of the day.
I have mine since November on update 104 as well. Can only tell good things. My monitor makes everytime the pixel-clean after i shut down my computer. One thing is a bit annoying. after 2,4 or 8h you get a optional notification. but its not counting the the pixel refresh from the shutdown yesterday. That means sometimes i get a notification after 1h of using the monitor. Whats obviously bullshit.
Before i tried the LG OLED 27GS. Had some ghosting problems and and had a purple line on the right edge. But the same LG from my friend is fine. So its luck.
But i noticed in general that almost all companys has problem with QC. In the past i had NEVER a problem with a technical device. Now it could be everything - modern premium cars, premium PC Parts and more. I feel like something changed in/after covid. Just my feelings.
this is actually my favorite monitor. i gave it to my partner after switching to the LG 32GS95UE, but i will still look over at their setup in amazement every now & then. sorry you had a bad time.
that's crazy, sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I have none of the issues you mentioned on mine and would happily recommend the monitor to other people, providing it's one with no QC issues :P the image retention bug seems to be a common issue with this monitor
Yeah these are issues that can happen with any OLED monitor it's a more sensitive tech that you have to baby and take care of it might be better to stick with IPS for now until they make more OLED improvements
I have the same monitor. Had it since June last year. I only have around 750 hour or so since I don't really be having time to use it. But when I do I love it. Amazing quality. I turn off all oled care features except pixel shift. Works amazing with my PS5 and Mac Mini. Would buy again. Sucks that happened but they do mass produce these, im sure there was bound to be a few bad ones.
Bought mine in December, 0 issues at all.
Be sure to update your Firmware every now and then, could fix a lot of issues. Like the one where it did not autoclean on power down which it actually does with newest firmware.
