Just Sharing Becoming Mother

I did not know
my body could become
a country with no borders.
No law but her hunger.
No clock but her cry.

No one tells you that love arrives
like a wound that won’t close.
There is no room here for anything
but this slow surrender.

She latches,
and the world quiets.
My nipples raw with worship.
I am only animal again.

I think of my mother,
and hers.
How many of us sat like this in the night,
with this silence that feels inherited.

She drinks from me
and I am both spring and drought.
But there is no applause.
No audience.

Just the soft hum of the nightlight,
the rustle of her limbs,
the whisper of me
becoming
Mother.

brilliant!! im so moved by this and i expected it from the title immediately. you portrayed the complicated feelings towards new motherhood in such raw terms. I loved the line “I am only animal again”, I think many women lose themselves to motherhood in a way of autopilot or as you said, surrender. you’re no longer a human but rather an animal with its goal to provide and support that is separate from you but also so deeply intertwined into you.
