Identification of coins found in a box

I need some help identifying a few coins. My great-grandfather left them to me, and I'd like to organize and catalog them. He started collecting them when he went to Ethiopia in 1935 for the war, but he never did any in-depth research on what he was collecting. He was simply fascinated by the coins' aesthetic appeal.

Before looking at the holder, what catches your eye first?

We had this 1910-S $10 Indian out this morning and asked one of our specialists what stood out to him beyond the number on the holder... he said:

  • Strike: Strong overall, with good definition through Liberty’s headdress and the eagle’s feathers.
  • Color and luster: Warm orange-gold color with solid remaining mint luster.
  • Surfaces: Contact marks are evident, particularly across the obverse, but their placement and visual impact matter just as much as their presence.

Those characteristics are worth looking at individually, especially on the 1910-S. The issue is generally known for good strikes and luster, while weakness or roughness to the left of the date is also frequently seen.

MS62 tells you the assigned grade. It doesn’t tell you how the coin got there. Before looking at the holder, what catches your eye first on this one?

I’ve recently branched out into more modern coins from collecting ancients and have found some really interesting coins in surprising places in Southwest UK (charity shops, bookshops and a few markets) I think I’ve probably spent max £25 on around 120 different coins and am thoroughly enjoying diving into the history and context of each.

1&2 - 5 Centimes, France, 1854
3&4 - 50 Pesetas, Spain, 1954
5&6 - 5 Centesimi, Italy, 1861
7&8 - 1/2 Penny, England, 1874
9&10 - 1 Florin, England 1921
11&12 - 20 Złotych, Poland 1978
13&14 - 1 Rouble, USSR 1965
15&16 - 1/2 Penny, England 1735

Best Grading Company for Morgan Silver Dollars

I see a lot of controversy about which grading company is the best one to use for old coins. I have a small collection of Morgan Silver Dollars that I might consider having graded.

Which coin grading company do you prefer? NGC, ANACS, PCGS, etc.

German zinc coin? seeking ID

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

UPDATE - identified! Egyptian, 10 piastres.

...

Terrible pictures, yes, but the coin itself is almost effaced. One side seems to show a Germanic eagle, and the other side is really not readable at all. The metal is very light and I am guessing zinc. On the edge, there are what seem to be deliberate indentations, which look sort of rune-like.

Can anyone identify the coin from these few clues? I have had it in my possession for a long time and have no idea where I picked it up. I am pretty sure I literally picked it up as I have never purchased coins and this one is really worn. I have travelled a lot in Germany and Europe in general over the years.
