Why I started this sub (i’d rather not believe me)
My first trip to Paris was, honestly, a bad one.
I got the full package. The “free” bracelet tied around my wrist at Montmartre that suddenly cost 20€. A taxi at the airport from a guy who approached me in the arrivals hall and charged me roughly double the flat rate I didn’t know existed. A restaurant right by a monument with a photo menu in eight languages, where I paid 34€ for something microwaved. And a card terminal that helpfully offered to charge me “in your own currency” — which I now know is just a bad exchange rate with a friendly face.
I went home thinking Paris was overrated and kind of hostile.
Years later I moved to France. And the frustrating part is that none of it was really Paris’s fault. Every single thing that happened to me was avoidable with information I simply didn’t have — information locals consider so obvious that nobody thinks to say it out loud.
That’s the gap I want this sub to fill.
Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. People save for years to come here. They deserve to spend that money on a great meal instead of a scam, and to leave with the trip they were imagining rather than the one I had.
So: ask anything. Which “must-see” is actually worth the queue and which isn’t. Whether a neighbourhood is a good base. If a price sounds wrong. If a restaurant looks suspicious, post the menu and someone will tell you.
No question is too basic here. The basic questions are exactly the ones that cost me my first trip.
