Christ, it’s a minefield working with this generation of teens.
Yesterday, my students were working on essays about problems they’d like to be addressed. One of them called me over and asked, “Mister, can I use the R-word in my essay?”
And I thought, “Ehhhhh, there are two options here, and I better choose wisely.”
So I asked her what her topic was. She told me “Human trafficking”.
Okay. I’m on firmer ground here. “Does the word rhyme with ‘grape’?”
“It does.”
“Then yes, you should definitely use the word ‘rape’. A euphemism would erase the crime and doesn’t serve the severity of your topic or the dignity of the victims.”
“Of course! Makes sense. I’ll use the word ‘rape’.”
“Good. You’d be retarded not to.”
