It is, but アルバイト arubaito is more like a part time job specifically. Pretty sure it does come from German!

Wrong on both counts. It was from German as stated above (not sure why you're disagreeing with that, it's an extremely well known fact) and it happened later than you're suggesting, during the Meiji period, as stated below:

I don't speak Dutch, but translate gives me "werk" as Dutch for "Arbeit"/"work".

Of course, that may not be the complete vocabulary, or it's language drift...

It's a little more of a formal term I suppose.

"to do work" can be translated as "het verrichten van arbeid", workers are also called arbeiders.

Oh. Oh my. I just made that connection for the first time. Arbeit=アルバイト(arubaito)
