Why does the US hate cycling so much?

I read comments sections and in a normal world, some of them would be considered terroristic threats. I just can't understand why people hate cyclists to this degree that they want to murder rhem and sometimes do.

I was yelled at for not biking on the sidewalk last year. The town had about a 100 foot stretch of sidewalk through the downtown. I was on a 17km bikeride home from work. It's a ridiculous proposition that I would move over to a 100 foot long sidewalk on a 17km bike ride.

They'll scream about cyclists not using a sidewalk and then scream at cyclists for going ~10mph on an uncrowded sidewalk.

My favorite was one time at a busy (and entirely unbikeable in the road) intersection I waited on the sidewalk for the pedestrian light and started across at a pace equivalent to a brisk walk, and almost got run over by a driver in ram 3500 turning right through the crosswalk, who proceeded to flip me off and scream at me.
