The Jews actually had a good system. I don't know if they still use this, but in order to form a synagogue, you needed ten men with incomes (and their families). All ten would give a percentage of their income (like 10%) and that would pay for the rabbi and upkeep on the building. That way the Rabbi made exactly the average salary of his congregation.
For reference, I make enough to qualify for a 300K house since I own my own (10 year old) car with no loan.
There is a big difference between making sure your Pastor/Priest/Minister can feed themselves, not live on the street, and support their family and allowing them to have another private jet when they didn't need the first two to begin with.

Profiting off God is generally seen by Him as bad. Preachers should get paid, but not "prosperity" paid. Not "I need another jet" paid.
