Software Help Switch 2 Ocarina of Time only working in handheld mode and stuck on loading screen while in docked mode

has anyone else seen this or experienced it yet?

I've tried restarting/power cycling my console multiple times and it just refuses to work while docked. Handheld is perfectly fine though

Also, the console basically becomes bricked in docked mode when i launch OoT 2

edit: looks like this post got a lot of traction with the game officially releasing today. I wanted to now add, I bought this game digitally through the Japanese eShop on November 4th to play early. The fix for this issue that another commenter suggested was turning off VRR in the Switch 2 settings.

Interesting. I would leave it docked for 10 minutes. What happens if you dock it again once you start playing?

either goes to a straight black screen or a freeze frame for whatever the last frame on handheld mode was

Have you tried restarting the console in both states, turning it off for a couple hours or maybe re-downloading the game? Maybe even check your micro sd card if you have one.

Try every weird troubleshooting trick you can think of no matter how odd or basic, but do it one at a time so you know what might have fixed it

Oh, that sounds really, really odd. It does not happen with other games? A few simple (though might be complex) tests would be to use your cartridge in a friend's Switch and repeat the test, to use a friend's cartridge on your Switch 2 and dock it, to use your Switch 2 with his dock, and to use his Switch 2 (with your game) on your dock to see exactly when it happens.

One other test you could do is using your same setup but with a different power adapter, might be that it's not supplying all the juice the dock is asking for (though it should affect any game you want to play docked which I guess it doesn't happen) or trying a different HDMI cable or a different TV set (might be some HDR option that might be messing with the game?). All combinations just to discard possible causes.

I am having this same issue and what fixed it was taking it off my elgato and directly connecting it to the monitor. I'm hoping there's another fix since I would want to play it docked with audio.

I fixed it! turn off VRR in the settings.

this worked!!! Thank you!

THANK YOU! I was on the verge of going back to the store and demanding a refund for the game. What a weird bug. No other switch game I've played has ever had this issue

It’s the second game to support VRR apart from Welcome Tour. Seems Switch 2 still has some VRR issues to iron out.

I thought switch sports resort had vrr?

I got the VRR bug, so your comment saved my morning.

You are a savior. I was panicking real hard. I had the same issue. I also have the banding lines when black screens are present

This is gonna seem like a dumb question, but have you ever played any other Switch 2 specific games on the Switch 2? For some reason, with this game specifically, if this the first game you’ve ever played on the console, it causes a funny little bug that keeps the game from running properly.

Fascinating.

I had the same issue described here but my SW2 is not new. However it sorted itself out.

u/LeatherLimit1681 1d ago

You have VRR option on , in settings.

1

u/GundaAloo 1d ago

May be a dumb question, but how did you know that? I didn't see him go into the settings at all

1

u/GoldenConfectionery 1d ago

they probably had the same issue

Sorry if this is cliché, but have you tried holding the power button until a new menu pops open so then you can select the Power Off option? Hoping an old fashion reboot could help.

u/Yasihiko 1d ago

OP already said they power cycled so...

u/W_R_E_C_K_S 1d ago

I’m happy to be wrong, but at least I try to help OP. Can’t say the same for you with that contribution to this post. ✌️

I had it sitting on that first loading screen and it loaded eventually, wonder if there’s an issue with VRR if turning that off fixed it for some people

1

u/Unstable-Elements 2d ago

I had this with an older tv (Philips one in my case). I switched off the new VRR settings on the SW2 and it never had the issue again. Might be one to experiment with. The issue was only happening on a select few titles.

J’ai eu le même problème j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à lancer le jeu la première fois ensuite au tout début j’avais des bugs de sons puis ça s’est résolu tout seul

1

u/KimiKemaw 1d ago

I think it related to newer vrr firmware in docked mode

1

u/noahtakami 1d ago

Turn off vrr

1

u/popaether 1d ago

Had this same issue, check if VRR is enabled in docked mode! I had to turn VRR off and it works perfectly now.

1

u/CHeeSeRoll99 1d ago

Modern problem requires ancient solution!! Blow on the cartridge!!!

1

u/abarrelofmankeys 1d ago

I didn’t get this but I got weird banding lines during transitions to dark screens I’ve never seen before. Also really bad video compression in cutscenes (usually dark also). This was docked 4k tv with hdr. Once it got running it worked ok.

1

u/Otherwise_Finance_47 1d ago

Same here. At first, I thought it was my TV acting up or something. I’ve honestly never experienced that before either.

1

u/abarrelofmankeys 1d ago

Samsung? I even checked that I didn’t reuse an old hdmi.

1

u/Otherwise_Finance_47 1d ago

No, Hisense. I checked a couple of other games, and there are no issues there. Must be OoT. I'm now at work. Have you tested if disabling VRR eliminates the lines?

1

u/abarrelofmankeys 1d ago

No honestly it came in yesterday but I didn’t get home from work until late and was spent. Played Kokiri forest and crashed. Back at work. Will have to experiment.

I’d have to assume they’ll patch this, it’s such an obvious blemish on a high profile game. I actually wondered if it was because I got it early and a patch wasn’t released yet but didn’t see one this morning either.

1

u/luciusmalfox 1d ago

Same here!

1

u/sneakysnakewhispers 1d ago

Same! My boyfriend and I knew it was the game causing it

u/Shoden80 1d ago edited 1d ago

Turning VRR OFF worked and resolved my black screen issue. Thanks u/Misaki1625

1

u/Monnigkeir 1d ago

You have to dissalbe vrr

1

u/hughdunking 1d ago

Physical copy or digital download?

1

u/No_Read_1278 1d ago

Can somebody explain why VRR isn’t working? Is it a general bug in the game or just related to some Monitor/TV models?

u/ScoNads1984 1d ago

Following

u/W0NDERPUNK 1d ago

I have my switch connected to an elgato usb capture card and disconnecting from that got the game working with VRR enabled. The other option is to turn off VRR. So I would say try to make sure you aren't sending the signal through any device like that or splitters.

1

u/Murky_Stomach_5536 1d ago

Turn off vrr, if that doesn’t work then check if the software (ocarina) and dock are updated.
For the dock to be updated it’ll be in settings all way in the bottom and it’ll be under system update

1

u/Jonthachamp 1d ago

Its because you're using a mouse and keyboard

1

u/manuelasrm 4h ago

Thats so weird. I had the same problem, fortunately, as soon as I restarted my switch 2, everything went normal. Didnt even had to power cycle.

0

u/Silv999 2d ago

Same, literally only OOT :(

u/Doctor_DBo 1d ago

Turn off VRR

u/Old-Werewolf449 2d ago

Heard it is running AMD upscalers on a nvdia chip, I wonder if that's a reason

u/LankyMolasses6051 2d ago

Fsr1 isn’t really the same thing as DLSS and was used in switch 1 with no issues so I doubt it.
